I have C3 to C7 Degeneration (Spondylosis) I have actually found sleeping without any pillow or head-prop to be very beneficial. I've tried the Face-down type, the "U" Shaped (Just under & cradling my neck) & tempurpedic. Nothing worked better than NO PILLOW or SUPPORT whatsoever. It's counterintuitive but maybe we are simply socialised to think we need pillows.

Trying to manage it myself as the wait list is insane to see a specialist over here in Oz. So very grateful for all the tips and correct education you offer us. I have cervical spondylosis & bulging C-5/6, & a good bit of neck arthritis. I have a buckwheat hull pillow (similar to the bamboo mentioned), with a zipper so can add/remove some hulls to my level of comfort. I ordered a medium-sized but it's as big & heavy as a 3 year old toddler lol (I named it George haha)...So.. I ordered a set of zipper travel pillowcases (which are fairly small), & I added my preferred level of the hulls, (be sure to also use an outer "regular" pillowcase to wash with your sheets), this is my pillow. I'm keeping George (which still has plenty of hulls!) to refill as needed because the hulls do eventually deteriorate from use. I adjust it to fit my neck & head, I'm usually a back sleeper but will turn on my side at times & this works perfectly for both. Also, I made myself two "heaties" (my term), made from an old t-shirt (very comfy material!), they are rectangular pillows about 5"×13" I sewed, left a filler slot & filled with regular grain rice (can also add some lavender and other dried plants/herbs for a nice scent), not packed totally full, so they are adjustable/maneuverable, then finished by sewing up/closing the slot . I heat them in the microwave (don't overheat, usually 2-4 minutes is enough, depends on size & density but test for your comfort level, just don't burn them up!), after heating, I turn them back & forth to distribute the heated rice equally, wrap them/roll them up in pillowcases to provide insulation & protection from any burns, plus be able to wash this outer cover. Then I can place them wherever it hurts without risk of burning myself or electrical shock, better than a heating pad & the insulation keeps them warm all night. They're like my little buddies, keeping me snuggly warm & comforting all the hurting places, including my neck on especially painful nights. GREAT for winter, too, as well as kids tummyaches (use caution, never overheat!).

I sleep on my side as it's more comfortable...being careful that my arthritis hips/ knees don't touch. This way does not seem to affect my cervical spondylitis that much either. But any twists to the neck could start of carotid problems which would then affect my body causing blackouts in getting up quickly to fainting, dizziness and falls...etc which are all part of cervical spondylitis anyway 😊

I'm a side sleeper and if it comes to a pillow, not even your video on this topic can help me. Have tried everything, thin, bit thicker, bit softer, bit harder, visco elastic... at least from the latter I know it's nothing for me, get pain in my ear and neck, can't fluff it up and too hot, so can rule out that one. Have now a soft one and the head of my bed a bit up, this last because of my sinuses, otherwise they stuff up.

Thanks Dr Mandell for your informative video but I find it impossible to sleep at night since my neck has started degenerating since August 2022 . I used to be a push bike rider for 20 years and I was hit twice by cars while I was riding in the bike lane. These accidents caused me major injuries such as severe whiplash, fractures, etc. I have a neurosurgeon for my issues and the latest MRIs in January 2023 show bulging disks at several levels, 2mm Retrolisthesis of C4/C5 and 1.5mm spondylolisthesis of C6. There are bilateral radiculopathies of mixed mild, moderate type. The affected nerves are C4, C5, C6, C7, C8. In the last 3 weeks I had an osteopath manipulation on the left of my neck to get rid of knotted muscles, but this adjustment made my whole neck a lot worse because the whole neck started to burn badly with pain, plus tingling spreading downwards in to my trapezius muscle, traps and also in the upper thoracic spine. I tried to sleep left, right, on my back, sitting down but I am not able to fall asleep due to the severe pain. I am feeling exhausted daily therefore the body is not healing. The minute anything touches my neck it starts excruciating. For me the best position to minimize the pain is standing, but it is impossible to sleep this way. I have been taking strong opioids to get some sleep but recently they are not working anymore like before. I feel always in pain, highly stressed and anxious,. It is like living in hell.
@marcelajaklova6560 Жыл бұрын
I am replying to your comment because I have similar issues and I can relate with your feelings that it is like living in hell with constant pain and anxiety which I believe just belongs to that... How are you doing Alfred? Are you able to sleep? I hope that your condition is improved by this time....Anyway, I just want to wish you to feel better and above all not to lose hope!
@alfred576 Жыл бұрын
@@marcelajaklova6560 Hi Marcela thank you for your concerns. Even your situation doesn't sound good and hope that you improve too. Doctors, neurosurgeons, physios, chiros, and osteopaths don't have a clue about how much pain we are going through, 10/10 24/7. I have been waiting 9 months for a solution but my neck and lumbar spine are getting worse through inaction of the doctors who just prescribe you things like Nortriptyline, Gabapentin and opioids which are a mask, patch to the severe problems that we have. They cause bad side effects such as nausea, drowsiness. I am not doing too well because I am always in pain. When I lie down to sleep within 2, 3 minutes I start burning with pain, pins and needles going past C7 into the thoracic spine. Many times I get referred pain in all my fingers on both hands, palms, wrist pain, bicep, triceps, shoulders, traps pain. In my lumbar area when I lie down I start getting tightness of the groin, burning of the calves, my feet are tight and feel pins and needles in the toes. On top of this I get cervicogenic headaches, ear aches, pain in my jaw, left eye, throat at times, it is really horrible. I also have bilateral tinnitus which drive me crazy. There are days that are better therefore I go for a short walk. I haven't had quality of life at all because I can't sit at a restaurant, connect socially, visit my grandkids etc. My arms and fingers are also weaker than before when I was well. I also joined the Mayo Clinic Connect forum to find answers. I tried hot and cold ice packs but they don't always work. Going to sleep is the worst time because the pain becomes very severe for me. I start stinging, burning pain 10/10 constantly which causes me massive anxiety, I am not able to breathe properly due to the anxiety and my blood pressure hits 167-170 over 102-105. I have a psychologist who helps me with mindfulness but when the pain is extreme it just doesn't work. I wish that Dr Mandell has some advice for people who are extremely in pain. I have done the exercises, the stretches and still get pain regardless. I suppose the next solution is surgery but I don't want a fusion. I rather go to see Deuk-Spine in Florida to have my bulging discs repaired with his Laser tool. Unfortunately I don't have the finances to cover such costs. Best regards. Alfred

what about people who have full cervical fusions? i am fused from my skull to c7 and since my skull fusion i wake up in tears everyday. to a point where i am scared to wake up. it hurts to sleep on my back or on the side. whichever side i sleep on will kill the next day. if i sleep on my back it hurts to sleep. i feel asleep sitting up once laying slightly back and felt ok but now when i try it if my head falls to a side while sleeping it will be in so much pain. my skull locks up since the skull fusion and i have to crack my neck and pop it painfully, and if i go to sleep i will wake up having to do this every time. i tried the therapeutic pillow and im so locked up , stiff and sore . i wish you could do a video for those many of us who did the mistake of being fused . especially since there are doctors online running scams to get people into their office and skull fused them/fully cervical fuse them there are tons of us that trusted them and are in tons of pain and sleeping is the worst
