Continuing with the D9 Restoration, the biggest job on these speakers is going to be fixing all the damage on the cabinets. before I can get to any of that the vinyl veneer needs to be pulled off of the wood cabinets. This can sometimes be a tedious task but if you have the right tools and a good idea on how it's done it can be very easy to do. this video I show you how to get that vinyl off the easy way.

I know you like restoring to a factory condition, but since your applying new vinyl anyways, making the grilles magnetic would be a nice subtle touch that is super easy to do. The magnets from Parts Source work fantastic and hold really well.

That's not a bad idea. The grills are as rough as the cabinets are so I just may go that route.

Cant wait until part 3. Where do you purchase the vinyl at? Thanks in advance. I have a set of dx9 that could use this done to.

Amazon does have some decent products for this. You have to watch though some of the self adhesive wraps are very thin. I usually buy mine at our local hardware stores.

I'm redoing some VS 120s. I watched this video and got a little too optimistic about removing the vinyl. I think I forgot that you're Canadian and hence prone to having a much better attitude than my American ass.

Lol yeah it can be tedious work. Working on small sections at a time seems to work best best the heat dissipates quickly making the vinyl tear easily.

the wires for the woofer are some kind of children's ones

They are quite thin yes. Not a big issue really considering it's just a short length but when I restore them I always replace the wire with new 18 gauge OFC wire.

@@SavingVegas This is a problem in conjunction with the poor coils that are there in the filter. all together this results in a drop in speaker sensitivity at a minimum! From the factory of this type of speaker, doing so is disrespectful to the user..

CV used pretty much used the cheapest parts you can find for crossover components. From the super thin wire iron core inductors to the TI electrolytic caps that have no business being in the signal path plus even the made in Mexico mylar caps are dirt cheap. The thin wire they used inside the cabinets isn't even close to the biggest issue. It's more common then not and a lot of speaker manufacturers used cheap xover parts. But quality drivers and pretty decent xover designs so they make a hell of a good speaker when these parts are upgraded.

@@SavingVegas To be honest, I wouldn’t say that the heads there are really good. in the upper models there is nothing yet, but overall it’s done quite simply. The only thing that is possible in terms of price and size of the bass drivers is yes, but the speakers are quite ordinary, the housings are also far from being good for such huge bass drivers used. To understand, in my country about 30 years ago they made mass-produced speakers with 10" woofers that had a 40mm front panel! And in crossovers, air coils with copper with a 1mm cross-section! So everything is relative!

Fair enough. I mostly only see D series, VS, Re and newer also a few of the older models that were a bit better quality wise so I'm used to seeing low quality parts used. Makes for an easy upgrades at least. Also since I've started measuring some of CV speakers I'm guessing at least some of the xover networks were calculated using only the drivers electrical parameters because there is a few models with really bad issues like drivers being out of phase.
