@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas 10 күн бұрын
Man! What do you have against the Chinese? Also, Cerwin Vega products were manufactured in the USA up until around the early 2000's. Later on, some were made in Indonesia and then China. Some of their mids and tweeters were made in Japan, and Taiwan. But man pretty much everything is made in China these days, so either the Chinese really did you wrong one time or you have some anger issues. I'm sorry either way because there's nothing my channel can do for you no matter which issue it is. 😆

Apparently I have a weird CV. My 1993 VS 120s have the Orange rubber coating, but there no foam - its a intact almost cloth like surround that the orange rubber coating is on. The Orange layer is flaking off, but the surround looks like new and works like new. I have some CV re foam kits, but notice they do not have the underlying layer of surround - they are just foam. I decided not to re edge them - they seem to me to sound as good as they did new -No loss of bass - no distortion of any kind. Where can you get the correct CV replacement that is rubber on surround core?

My brother had those same AT-12s back in 1989 and I inherited them years later. I blew many fuses but never the speakers. lol You either love CVs or you hate em! They can handle a lot of power. I have a pair of SL-28s in front, a pair of SL-5Ms for surrounds and an XLS-6C for center. I have an 8” Klipsch front firing sub up front by the towers and a 12” Klipsch down firing sub in the back next to my couch. Maybe not the perfect setup but since I wheel and deal a lot in used home audio I hardly have any $ into them. Anyway, great video!

4 Ohms for a budget system is ridiculous in a bad way. Most people don't have a two channel 4 ohm capable amp just sitting around being happy waiting for a killer speaker. They have a cheapo receiver usually theater receiver that pushes about 50 watts or less all channels driven at 6 to 16 ohms, get headaches, and wonder why. 4 ohms is not the norm for home audio and I just don't get what Vega, or any other cheap speaker maker is thinking here. None of my friends over the last 30 years save one father of a friend had, an audiophile system and it was NAD. It was made by hand and sounded like velvet and sweetness. It would drive two speakers at 4 ohms with dips to 3 ohms and a non-powered sub. That was 1988 and it cost two years full paychecks and credit from a man that made shit wages cleaning for Tektronics. It was amazing sounding. But it took three people working for that asshole to get his system. It hasn't changed much and 4 ohms sucks. Most speaker manufacturers claiming to be 6 to 8 ohms are usually lying and the ones that claim 4ohms are as well. Most 4 ohm speakers drop as low as 3 ohms because they use cheap assed parts even on speakers up to $2000 dollars each. So put them on notice instead of kissing their collective assets.

I love the content!!!!! I was surprised you only got 110 out of them. BUT VERY RESPECTFUL!!!! 110 LOL Food for thought and please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not familiar with that adcom gear you have but if it's home audio, the RCA voltage should be .775 and the pa amplifiers need more voltage then that going Into their inputs to push to their full potential. I use crown drive core 2 power amplifiers because of the that issue. It has a output switch to use for home audio use. I'm very familiar with the euro power amplifiers aswell, I had to use a mixer in order to get my home preamp to work properly with p/a amplifiers. I love my crowns, they're not for everyone but theyre easy to put into any system.

I generally use a product called PL Premium, it's a construction adhesive that comes in tubes to use with a caulking gun. If your just gluing the ports back in that may be a little overkill, even just a good wood glue works just fine for that application.

That receiver would run either of these speakers just fine. Cerwin Vega is known for their high sensitivity ratings. Sensitivity ratings are measured in decibels and usually measured at 1 watt from 1 meter away. Depending on the model they measure in at anywhere from 94dB up to over 100dB, so they will play louder than most with lower wattage amps. With that said, the more power you have on hand means more headroom and more control of the drivers in the speaker. You would be surprised at how well these speakers sound, even at lower volume levels the bass is very present. As long as you don't overdrive the amplifier by turning it up too loud. This causes clipping and will take out tweeters in a hurry and even midrange drivers sometimes. For this reason power meters, distortion or clip light indicators are nice to have. Unfortunately your receiver does not have any of these so you have to let your ears be the judge. I good rule of thumb is to not set the volume up past 70% ish and you should be safe. I will add that these speakers really come to life with a good quality power amp. But like I said they are still very enjoyable with lower wattage units. I hope this answers your question.

The exact ones I purchased are unfortunately not available anymore. But your basically looking for spiders that have a 4 or 4¼ inch outside diameter and a 1 inch center diameter for the voice coil. Some of what I didn't show in the video is the R & D I did to find the best suited spider. What I found was a little stiffer spider worked better than a more flexible one. Either way any new spider you get within the size specs will be an improvement apon the old used ones so you should be good to go.

I know the VS120 uses a different midrange, but have you come across the same issues with the VS120 midrange? Great video thanks! I recommend using a nice spray dampening material on the plastic midrange enclosure. I know not factory but it’s a harmless modest modification
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Ай бұрын
The DXM-4 used in the VS-120 and ATM-5 used in the VS-100, AT-10, 12 and 15 don't seem to have the same issues. They are smaller drivers with less excursion so that may be why they hold up better but I can't say for sure. The crossovers in these 150s were in rough shape, both capacitors in the midrange signal path were toast. Good chance that was the cause of the problem with the midrange driver. The caps were no longer keeping the mids from playing outside of their abilities causing extra stress on them is my guess. As for your suggestion for extra damping on the mids enclosure, that is a great upgrade. That and even building a more solid one using MDF or similar material as well as the extra damping you suggested.

@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Ай бұрын
Some people turn their noses up at measurements and I think some take them a little too seriously. I believe their important when doing any kind of repair work to a speaker. Changing vital components of a driver can drastically change its parameters and you need to make sure after the change that the driver is still going to work together with the speakers other components. I don't use measurements to judge how a speaker will sound because a frequency response doesn't tell you everything, it can give you an idea but not the while story. I use them to detect major issues if any and go from there. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.

@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Ай бұрын
That's awesome. I have lots of fun tinkering with this stuff and have been doing so for a long time now. I have already taken some initial measurements of this speaker and that includes each individual driver as well. I have compared the initial measurements I took with the crossover inline and the midrange frequency response doesn't look much different than the ones I took of the mid unfiltered. I have yet to remove the 2 capacitors in the midrange circuit to test their values but I'm guessing they are going to be out a lot. There are also 2 inductors in that circuit as well so my guess is that's all that's really filtering that mid right now. There's a good chance I will be making a video on these crossovers. I have all new parts for them, polypropylene caps and air core inductors but I may be using them in a different set. Either way these are going to be getting new parts but probably cheaper budget parts otherwise I am going to be into these for more than I can sell them for.

Hey, I know this is an old vid, but just got my kit to recone some CV VS-120s, but they seem to only need the foam replaced now I'm really looking at em, everything else seems fine, the red foam's just disintegrated, (always lived in places where I can't _really_ give these things a workout without noise complaints, so it isn't like they've been worn out, they're just old) so my question is this, should I just refoam them and keep the cones etc original, just save the new cones/coils for a rainy day, or should I just replace all of it since I have new?
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Ай бұрын
I would definitely just replace the foam, doing a complete recone is only necessary when you have a damaged voice coil or cone. Always good when you can keep the original cones, if you end up wearing out the spiders you can just replace those like in this video and keep the OG voice coil and cone if still in good shape.

This is a very good video. I have a pair of 12TR's that I am re-foaming the woofers. All other speakers are running great. These speakers are bulletproof. I use a high quality furniture polish on the cabinet woodwork ant they look great. Something I have been curious about: Currently I run the crossovers at -0- db. I understand that tuning them is based on room acoustics and personal preference. I am happy with the output. My question is that any change in crossover adjustments seem to be barely perceptible. An audiologist told me I have lost high frequency hearing and wonder if that contributes to it. Or is something else amiss? Thanks and keep up the good work.
@SavingVegas
@SavingVegas Ай бұрын
When taking measurements of the mid and tweeter on the front baffle I played around with the adjustments quite a bit. Adjusting the tweeter caused a rise in output from around 3kHz to 20kHz so even a loss in hearing at higher frequencies you should still be able to tell the difference. I found they measured the flatest with both the mid and tweeter turned all the way up. They could however need to be cleaned up with Deoxit. If they are dirty or corroded at all it can definitely cause a loss in output.
