Nice review, Cliff. My wife and I have owned 393 RL's for six years, now. We wouldn't have anything else. It is so awesome to be able to EASILY take them wherever we go in our travels through the US. One thing you should know and pass on to your viewers: it is incredibly hard to tip this thing, despite that initial uneasiness that you mentioned when your friend got started. When we first got ours, I wanted to practice re-entries so I put it in my swimming pool. You will not believe how hard I had to try just to get the thing to tip over!!! It was serious work. We now are full-time RV'ers and these kayaks are in our storage bay, ready to paddle wherever we are. Also, for only $200, you can buy the battery operated pump which will save you the extra exertion at the beginning.

Hi 👋 Mtnboy! - congratulations on your new RazorLite! That is a truly awesome kayak that does all around paddling great, as well as high Performance paddling. Absolutely love the boat, and I’m sure you will, too! The key is how efficient the boat paddles, while still being able to carry a good payload! Here are more of my videos in the RazorLite. Hi Cliff, thank you for this awesome in-depth review! I had ordered my Razorlite earlier in the summer and finally received it in August. After unpacking it in my living room , fighting with the foot peddel installation, fighting with the pump hose because it wouldn't twist onto the inflation ports, installing the seat, sitting down on the seat, and finally deflating the boat, taking one half of an hour trying to fold it back up, finding a video on line to teach me how to fold it, packing it all back into the bag, and dragging the whole thing down the stairs into the basement, I had come close to sending it back. I thought I'd try it out on the water first. I am a small woman- 5'2", weight about 106 lbs. The backpack straps do not adjust nearly short enough for me, leaving the bulk of the weight sitting somewhere around my butt and making it necessary for me to carry it bent doubled over forward and supporting it with my hands behind me- underneath the bag as best as I possibly could. It was exhausting! Ok, I got it into the car got to the river and heaved it back out again and lugged it to the water with great difficulty but finally got it all set up. I didn't install the fin or the footpegs though (no amount of effort could result in successfully installing those pegs). By now, I was on the verge of tears. I put it in the water and started paddling. As noted, at first I thought it was tippy but quickly adjusted. Without the fin, I thought it was too difficult to track straight. I'm sorry but the seat was downright painful ( as mentioned, I am small and maybe the lack of natural padding played a roll). Actually, I couldn't wait to end my paddle and go home. But first I had to fold the thing up and put it back in the bag and then the car and then the basement. I was thinking this whole thing was one big mistake. I had never had this much heartache with my hard bodied kayak. I decided to give it another try. This time I was mentally prepared for the weight and bulk of it. I took it to a lake- still couldn't install the footpegs but luckily my son was present and he had the strength to do it. I installed the fin and put a little pad on the seat then rolled up a towel for the small of my back. There was an improvement in the comfort level but still not very comfortable- maybe more padding on the seat. The fin is large and was slightly damaged by the gravel on the boat launch. However, it greatly increased my paddling enjoyment (also, it looks like there are different sized fins in the catalog and maybe a smaller fin would help in the shallower water I often find myself in). Now my husband was in my Tsunami 120 and my son was in his AE/AF inflatable with the backbone. I smoked them both and left them in my wake- the Razorlite was so fast on the water! It was a beautiful day and at some point, I layed my seat back and stretched out my legs and just watched the clouds change shape (mainly to give my butt a little break). Even a tall person can take a nice nap like this in the Razorlite! I soon heard another kayak coming up next to me. I sat up to take a look- it was a young couple paddling the Razorlite tandem! With a shake of my fist, I shouted, "Seaeagle!". They exclaimed that they loved theirs and I said the same. Though the experience was not perfect, I discovered there is a learning curve that you have to get over before the real enjoyment starts. The worst is the footpegs and I'm still not able but maybe I'll figure that out some time or maybe I'll figure out how to store it with the footpegs in. I'll also have to figure out how to make the seat comfortable because the way it is- it just hurts. All-in-all, the good outweighs the bad. I think it is worth fixing the bad for myself to enjoy the good- because the good is very good. I have decided to keep it! PS: I must include a word about their customer service: the woman I spoke with when I had to change something about my delivery address, was absolutely wonderful. I wish I could remember her name but I did in fact complement her to her supervisor.

Hi Mary - Thanks for watching and commenting! What a story, I’m glad that you are getting more comfortable with the RazorLite! One thing I do with mine after deflating the boat is leave the foot pegs in and remove the seat. Once deflated (with foot pegs in) I fold the back of the boat about a 1/3 of the way in, then the front about a 1/3 of the way in. Last, I fold the remainder of the boat in half. I’m then left with a boat that is a little over 4’ long. With this size, I slip my two arms underneath the boat and put it in the back of my truck. If you have a hatchback, it will go in there nicely as well. It’s easy to store the boat this way. I don’t bother with packing it up in the backpack unless it’s being stored for a long time or going on vacation and I need more space. Hope this helps, keep at it, you’ll definitely grow with this boat!

maybe do what cliff did fold it over 3 times leave foot braces in.Thats what i plan on doing.Also on the aluminum rods for foot braces i sanded the ends slightly to make them a bit rounded.,but made sure i did not shorten them.Went in much easier.I agree very fast boat.I am vertical paddler. the shaft is vertical not horizontal.Like the pro racers paddle. really loved reading your long review.Good testimonial to buy the kayak and NOT give up.Every time you take out it will be easier.

Glad you stuck with it, Mary! Two hints. The foot pegs ARE a beast but the black plastic is much easier to bend when warm so if at all possible, leave the kayak opened in the sun for a few minutes before attempting to bend it into place. The other is on folding. Definitely put the two ends in and make sure they are side-by-side when you do the final fold, not one on top of the other. You WILL get the hang of it! As for speed, these things will stay with any comparable hard shell and destroy most any inflatable. Sea Eagle's customer service is indeed top notch. They've been so good, I won't even consider another brand and we have several friends/relatives who are now also Sea Eagle owners! Good luck!!!

Instead of hard kayak with cockpit and skirt, you can use Sea Egle Razor Lite only on flat water. In case of waves water very easy going into kayK from front side. For flat water its good choise. But for waves only few inflatable options, recent one is Dechatlon itiwit 500 with skirt

Great review, I’ve had one over a year and second all your points. I’m a skinny 6’3” and it’s very comfortable. Might add or reinforce (1) not rated for whitewater, careful in higher winds or chop, (2) don’t leave it inflated in the sun, you can bust the drop stitch, (3) friends with little experience say it was too tippy for them (upside is it’s very fast!)….

Nice review. It is definitely an excursion exploring kayak, for people who like to go fast , have no space for storage and kayak with others who have hard shells, which are fast. The fin situation i think applies more for ocean bc according to them you can do light sea kayaking. will try that in the summer. thanks for reviewing this.😀😀
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments Chevy van travel! The RazorLite can absolutely perform well when touring or doing light sea kayaking. As for the fin, that is totally up to user preference. If you want a boat that is more playful and maneuverable, go without the fin. If you want dead straight tracking, go with the fin

Wonderful review and I love how relaxed you are in sharing how nice the 393rl is. We picked up two at the start of summer and have kayaked more this year than the last five years combined (we've done sit-on-tops for 25 years). We love how easy they are to bring with both fitting in the trunk of a Corolla! Keep up the great work! Side note: my wife uses an automatic inflating PFD and I use an NRS Oso which has full back flotation, but it's thin and works well with the seat. We both use Purple seat cushions on top of the seat for all-day comfort. And our 20 pound Chihuahua mix loves hopping from one boat to the other and his sharp nails don't cause any issues at all (he wears a PFD too!).

Hi David! Thank you for watching the video and also for your kind comments! You are right, ease of transport without sacrificing the quality and efficiencies of hard shell kayaks is a HUGE plus! On top of that, the RazorLite will likely exceed the performance of many hard shell kayaks. Also, you have no need for roof racks or large areas to store your kayak! Also, thank you for your recommendation on PFD’s. I will check out the NRS Oso. I have a Chihuahua / Dachshund mix (Chiweeney). I would love to start getting her out on some of my adventures! Safe paddling and adventuring out there David!

@@KayakCliff You're really awesome, and I have an affinity for Texas. I lived there for 14 years and went to U.Houston and UTD (lived in Galveston, Texas City, Clear lake, Murphy, and Garland). Our guy is 18-20 pounds and we've tried the RuffWear Float Coat, the MTI Underdog, and the Outward Hound. The cheapest is the Outward Hound and the only one we trust for him. The float coat looks great and is made of great material but he'd slide backward out of it when we'd grab him out of the water. It's an older one and the new ones are supposed to have softer foam which could hug a dog better for a tighter fit. The MTI is a great idea but it was a tad too big and he slipped forward through it and it bound up his rear legs. The Outward Hound fits great, has a nice stretchy belly wrap, and a perfect handle for retrieval. We bought a medium at first but it was far too big, the small was perfect. If yours is smaller, then the extra small might be a good fit. Here he is in it on our 393s: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4vTgYeBpLdoopI Thanks again for such a nice and well-balanced video, I've already shared it with others-you did a wonderful review. =)

David which purple cushions do you use? I’ve been trying to find one that’s the right size (not to wide). I also wouldn’t want it too thick to raise myself too high as well. The other part of my wish list would be installing wide Velcro under the seat. My wife’s inflatable has that and it’s awesome. Once you set the seat in the desired spot and connect to your D rings it stays put.

Hi Cliff, thanks for the thorough review of the Sea Eagle RazorLite. I purchased mine last year and have taken it out on rivers and lakes and have a few things to say: The hand pump gives you a great upper body workout. You will need a little siesta when you're done. Now that I've developed the awesome guns, I think I will invest in the battery pump. Also, the hose port is fixed with no ability to swivel so I would suggest before twisting the hose port onto the valve, try twisting the hose in the opposite direction a little bit first. The seat is just painful. I purchased a gel seat pad to put on top and that did the trick. As noted, it has an open cockpit. I think I like that. It's so sweet to dangle your legs over the soft sides and splash your feet in the water. Yeah, that's nice. Don't forget to use sunscreen or bring a towel to cover your legs. If the sun is hot, you can wet the towel and stay cool and protected. I like to use the skeg while paddling. I don't like the way the bow sways back and forth without it. You have to put it on while on dry land then drag your boat into the water. The skeg drags across the rocks and gets chewed up and bent some. My friend complained the boat leans to one side. I wonder if that is the reason. By the way, I don't notice the leaning. The wind wasn't very strong but it was still blowing the boat around pretty good. This boat sits higher in the water than the hard body kayaks- sort of like a canoe. I guess the extra height and lighter weight puts it more at the mercy of the wind. As mentioned it is fast. None of the other kayakers could keep up with me. You can take a nice nap in your RazorLite. Just tether up to your friend's boat, unsnap the seat, and stretch out. Your friend will kindly drag you along behind while you snooze. It is easy to deflate but not that easy to get dry. Water gets trapped under the air chambers and in the nooks where your towel can't reach- even if deflated. The water kind of trickles out when you fold it. Then when you open it back up, you encounter water all over the interior surface. I think by now we all know about the famous difficulties of folding it back up. Full disclosure: the first time I attempted this, I worked hard for about two hours. Finally, I just flopped on the couch and dissolved in actual tears...true story. I can do it now though but still not easily. Well, that's all I can think of right now. If I can think of anything else later, I'll add it on. OK, happy paddling!

Oh, I forgot to say: The foot pegs are REAL hard to put in. I saw a tip about using a Dremel to round off the edges of the rods. I'm going to try that.

Oh thank you so much Mary for all of the paddling wisdom you have compiled while paddling the RazorLite! Some great points there! I typically re-inflate my RazorLite once I get home and stand it on end to completely drain it out and let it dry in the sun. I don’t usually pack my razor light back into the backpack. I usually just fold it into thirds and lay it on a shelf in my garage. It’s about 4 1/2 feet long when folded into thirds. Not sure what your storage requirements are though…

Hi 👋 Susie - Thanks for watching and commenting! I’m attaching below links to my adventure videos in the RazorLite. It is an awesome boat! Before going inflatable with Sea Eagle, I had 13 or 14 different sit on top and sit inside hard shell kayaks from 12-14’ in length. While the sit inside does protect you from the elements more, I have gravitated in my liking to the sit on top or open cockpit designs like the RazorLite. In the colder months, I paddle in jeans tucked into my Muck boots - Muck Boots Wetland Rubber Premium Women's Field Boot a.co/d/84azGtd These boots allow me to walk in the water while getting in the boat and they are really warm with the neoprene they are constructed from. You can get different thicknesses of neoprene depending on where you are paddling. Also, from Sea Eagle, I have the kayak blanket - Kayak blanket bit.ly/3yVW8Yq The blanked is water proof and warm, while it keeps the paddle drip off your legs. I hope this helps! Thanks for a really informative review. I have rented basic hard shell sit on top type a few times and now want to take the plunge and buy a kayak so that I can go when and where I want. For transportation reasons and storage it needs to be inflatable. We are based in the Lake District, UK and have plenty of large fresh water lakes, where I'd plan to spend 1-2 hours enjoying being out on the water. Ideally, I would try before buy but this option is unavailable. So, I need to try and get this right 1st time and looking for a bit of reassurance that I'm not making a bad decision. The 393RL meets all the quality and performance that I'd be looking for , the only thing is I'm technically a novice so the comments that this kayak is for intermediate+ makes me stop and think. I'm 145 pounds/5'6" and reasonably active and fit. My expectation is that even if the boat feels a bit tippy at first, I'd work on that until I'd got it right. My understanding the the tippy thing is more a sensation than actual risk of flipping the boat over - which would be quite a difficult thing to do. Any advice comments would be welcome. Thanks.

Hi 👋Adrian - You will absolutely not have any problems paddling the Razorlite 393RL. Having kayaked before with 145lbs / 5’6’’ you will not find the RazorLite a problem at all. It may feel a little bit tippy at first, but no more than most any other 28’’ wide kayak. The slight tippyness is what you call “primary stability” whereas the secondary stability is what keeps you from going over. The secondary stability is very good in this boat!!! The only people that might have a learning curve on this would be heavier paddlers (225-250 lbs.) that have not done much paddling in the past. I hope this helps, below is my affiliate link to the product page, plus more importantly, all my adventure videos utilizing the 393RL RazorLite. Take care and safe adventuring out there. I just asked Cliff this, can I have ur feedback as you seemed to have been on the position I am now. I am personally torn between this razorlite or it’s tandem variant seaeagle razorlite 473 and the rough equivalent Oru kayaks, bay ST or the haven TT, as a tandem alternative. I got my wife or a friend that sometimes join in my adventures, but when alone both 473 and haven TT can be used as single paddler. I like the simpler and faster assembly of the orus, but a fully loaded, paddle and else will be way more expensive than a sea eagle razorlite 393/473. Could you please weigh in after having gone for the razortlite, but being familiar with the orus. Thanks

Hi Bert! I’m used to a more lively and maneuverable kayak that has a little rocker like my hard shell touring kayaks. I find it tracks perfectly for me and turning is a breeze. Now, I have a lot of paddling experience, so it might just be my stroke. If there is a strong crosswind, I think you definitely want the skeg. It’s great to have the option with this boat to use the skeg when you think you need it.

Hi Cliff! Well, I took the Razorlite out on her maiden voyage last weekend, and it was incredible! So much faster than my hardshell (which isn't the worst kayak, but isn't the best either). I was able to paddle so much farther with much less fatigue--and I haven't paddled in months. The seat gets a bit uncomfy after a couple of hours, but so did the one on my hardshell. I have to work on streamlining the set-up and tear down, but that'll come with time. I even got to see a big-horned sheep during my paddle--I was able to get a decent picture with my phone because the Razorlite is pretty darned steady--I'd have been spinning in circles in my other kayak. P.S. The footrest rods are still the devil. LOL
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
That’s great to hear, thanks for sharing your experiences! My sciatica flares up after sitting in the seat for 1.5 hours, but it does in my other kayaks too. I have heard that the purple mattress company sells really nice seat pads that work well in a kayak too! Other kayakers swear it helped their sciatic nerve pain. I plan on trying that out for my sciatic issues. Otherwise, when I get out and stretch for 5 minutes, I’m usually ready to go another hour or so . . . I just leave the foot pegs in. Unless you are packing it back up in the backpack, just lay it flat on the ground and fold into thirds. Fold the bow about 60% down the hull, then fold the stern overlapping the bow fold. This yields about a 4’ long boat that is easy to store on a large shelf or in the back of a SUV. I wouldn’t go to the hassle of folding up like new, unless you are going on a long trip and need the maximum amount of room in your vehicle. Safe adventuring out there!!

Hi Kevin - I just purchased a cheap $25 knockoff off of Amazon. It works well, but I’m sure the original from Purple might work even better, especially if you got the thicker one. If you are using it in the RazorLite, getting something too thick will raise your center of gravity, thereby making the kayak feel a little more tippy. Sea Eagle has these nice inflatable cushions that work real well too! Here’s the link, I’m going to get one of these to try myself! www.seaeagle.com/Accessories/seats/inflatable-seat-base

@@KayakCliff I have a weird solution to this problem. I had one of those boat cushions that has the handles on both sides so it can double as a flotation device. The nylon cover deteriorated to the point where the guts came out of it. I noticed that there's a hard solid piece of plastic in the center of them to so they can keep their shape. This effectively cuts the cushion thickness in half. I took about half of the cushioning out. It's in several layers that can be easily removed. I put those in a 3.5 gallon ziplock bag to make them waterproof. Now I have a cushion half as thick with no handles and no hard plastic making it less comfortable but with the same amount of effective padding. You can add or remove layers to get the desired thickness as long as it will still fit in the ziplock bag. It makes a good extra cushion for boats and kayaks and you already wear a pfd in a kayak so no problem there.

@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching and commenting Jonathan! Yes, paddling without the fin is great for skinny water too. It’s nice to have the fin for when you are paddling in tough crosswinds or tidal currents. Since this boat has so much flotation due to it’s drop stitch inflatable construction, it only takes 2-3 inches of draft. When compared to a hard shell or folding kayak, it takes much less water to paddle because it sits up on top of the water, rather than inside the water if that’s makes sense . . . ? Again, thanks for watching and commenting. Safe adventuring out there!!!

@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jonathan - I would be interested in knowing how it fits you at 6’5’’. It’s a balance of adjusting the 4 seat straps to allow you to slide the seat back as far as possible, while having the foot pegs as far forward as possible. Your weight will be more centered towards the back, but the boat can handle this no problem due to it’s great flotation. You will want to put some weight up in the bow if you are taking a cooler or other items with you to help balance out the weight and keep the bow in the water. Bottom line, if it doesn’t fit you, Sea Eagle has a 120 day return policy.

Thanks Jonathan! I paddle here in North Texas throughout the Winter as well. Most of our days are highs between 40 - 60 degrees. In the Winter, I usually paddle in jeans with slightly below the knee high neoprene “Muck Boots”. These muck boots keep my legs and feet dry and warm. Any paddle drip I get is shielded by the muck boots. I love them. The owner of Sea Eagle lives on the water in Long Island and paddles all winter in the bay up there. He sent me a water proof, fleece lined leg blanket that they sell and swears that it will keep your feet and legs toasty and dry. I’m going to try it out. I plan to do a video outlining how the “average Joe” can paddle in the Winter. If you paddle in calm protected waters and don’t expand past your abilities, Winter is a great time to paddle when temps are in the 40-60’s. I know what my limits are and I don’t even come close to exceeding them in the Winter. Keep it safe and have fun. Here’s a link of the Sea Eagle waterproof leg blanket, you will see it in an upcoming video on Winter paddling for the average guy or gal! www.seaeagle.com/Accessories/life-jacket/waterproof-blanket Let me know how you like the RazorLite!

Hi Travel Hawk - Thanks for asking and also watching my video. I had both the Beach and the Coast kayaks. Here’s what I didn’t like. Both of them are composed of many parts and I had several parts start to break within 6 months. In my opinion the plastic used in most of the kayaks parts was pretty cheap quality. This did not impress me based on how much these kayaks cost! Also, they were not as fast as I expected them to be. The really plow through the water rather than neatly slicing through the water. I was never comfortable in them either. I’m 6’ / 185 lbs. I could never get my feet positioned comfortably as the cockpit height was very low. I had to position my feet outward in a direction they did not want to go naturally. On the ORU groups, I witnessed other paddlers having quality issues with the boats as well. Lastly, if you swamp them, they sink. They also don’t carry a lot of payload. I’m totally switched over to the Sea Eagle inflatables now! The quality, comfort, safety, paddle efficiency, payload capacity, time to put together (inflate) are light years better than the ORU’s. I hope this information is helpful to you. Hi there Roy! Thanks for watching and commenting! The RazorLite works great for any type of flat water which would include boat wakes. During the summertime, I frequently paddle on lakes with a lot of boat traffic. The RazorLite performs very well for me and if waves are approached correctly, I rarely find water coming over the bow due to the boats superb buoyancy. Now, a 385ft will be more stable than the RazorLite, but you will sacrifice speed. The RazorLite performs from a primary and secondary stability standpoint like you would expect a 28’’ wide boat to perform. It’s a fine blend of speed, agility and stability. I hope this helps. Hi 👋 there Joe, I think you are probably having difficulty getting it rolled back to the original shape, because you are not completely sucking the air out of it by putting the pump in reverse? Also, if you want to get it back into the backpack, you definitely need to take the foot pegs out. Getting the foot peg posts out can be pretty difficult though. I have heard that many have taken the foot pegs out and taken like a Dremel to slightly round off the edges and reduce the length by a minute amount. This definitely aids in getting the pegs in and out easier. Sorry, getting the boat back into the pack pack is usually something I do not do. If I end up flying somewhere, I will do that. I just fold it into thirds and put it on a shelf in my garage. I hope this helps!

My sister and I recently got paddle boards and have been on several paddle trips now, but I watched your video on all the Sea Eagle inflatable kayaks to see if I might like one of those. The Fast Track 385 model doesn't have foot pegs, do you find that makes it more uncomfortable or do you not really "need" them? We paddle in the river and through the mangrove channels off to the side, as well as in the springs (Florida). Between the RazorLite and Fast Track 385, which do you think would be best for me? Also, if you have recommendations on gloves, that would be awesome because the kayak paddle I have for my SUP board is slippery, lol

Hi 👋 there FLxBarrelRacer! I am very comfortable in the FastTrack without foot pegs, it works fine for me. Sea Eagle does sell foot pegs like in the RazorLite that you can easily install into the FastTrack. I was very comfortable without them though. Both the RazorLite and FastTrack are great boats. I would say that I use the RazorLite the most and it is my favorite simply because it is fast, stable, highly maneuverable, all rigid drop stitch construction, while carrying a great payload amount. I like the FastTrack for when I might need to stand up in the boat to stretch or fish. I really appreciate how fast the fasttrack is considering it is a 36’’ wide boat. It is not nearly as fast as the RazorLite, but it is definitely in the game. The FastTrack is great for when you might have someone else with you and you need to paddle tandem. Also, it’s great if you have a big dog with you, because of the added stability. The RazorLite is not as stable as the FastTrack, but plenty stable for most anyone that would be paddling it. Thank you for watching, and commenting! There are companies that make sunshades and covers for kayaks. I would not recommend it though. When you elevate a sun top over a kayak, it becomes a sail very quickly, and will carry you all over the lake even with the slightest of breezes. it will be very difficult to paddle with one of those up and any kind of wind. Instead, I wear a long sleeve sun shirt with a sun hat, and with my PFD on I jump in the water and get everything wet. That acts as a nice air conditioner for me while I am paddling to keep me cool.

Thanks for another wonderful, extensive, and detailed review. I am personally torn between this razorlite or it’s tandem variant seaeagle razorlite 473 and the rough equivalent Oru kayaks, bay ST that you reviewed or the haven TT, as a tandem alternative. I got my wife or friend that sometimes join in my adventures, but when alone both 473 and haven TT can be used as single paddler. I like the simpler and faster assembly of the orus, but a fully loaded, paddle and else will be way more expensive than a sea eagle razorlite 393/473. Could you please weigh in on this dilemma?
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi M CH! Happy Saturday to you! The biggest thing to think of is when you have a tandem kayak, but you usually paddle by yourself, is you have all that extra weight to carry and paddle. If you more often paddle by yourself, it would be better to have a single kayak, then eventually a tandem for when someone else comes along. In my opinion the ORU is WAY more complicated to put together and takes much longer. Couple that with the fact that Oru’s have 50 - 100 parts (brackets, nuts, bolts, seams etc. ) in them. When one of these parts, you have a big problem. I had a lot of parts break on my Oru Coast and Bay. I’ve witnessed countless people on facebook forums lament about their ORU’s that have misplaced parts or broken parts. With the RazorLite, there are just two parts. The kayak and the seat! Just roll it out on the ground, attach your battery operated pump and your are ready to go in about 3-5 minutes. Safety and performance is much better in the Sea Eagle. The boats are fast and cut through the water much better than an ORU. Tip them over or swamp them, it is impossible for them to sink. Plus, you can do a wet entry back into them without swamping them again. Let me know if I can help anymore and safe adventuring out there!!!

Hi there Jim! Thank you for watching and commenting! This kayak would be faster than any hard shell 12 foot kayak, like a tarpon 12 foot sit on top. Definitely faster than that. Only slightly slower than a 14 foot hard shell touring sit inside kayak. When I kayak with my buddies that are in their 14 foot touring sit inside kayaks, I can definitely hold my own, but they have just a slight edge over me.

Cliff, good review. I'm an experienced canoeist and hard-shell kayaker (Dagger Stratos 14.5) looking for one inflatable that is lighter, and easier to transport that my kayak but capapble of the same things. I sold my canoe. In spring, in my kayak, I enjoy cold class I-II whitewater a couple times/yr (without a spray skirt, but with a wetsuit). There is enough wave splash that I have to bail 2-4 gallons out after a several mile stretch, there are safe straight sections to do this. The rest of the time I'm in slow-moving cold river water, or on small lakes. Could the 393RL handle fast river water, class I-II, as well as the flatwater? thanks.

Hi Aaron, thank you so much for watching and commenting! The Sea Eagle Razorlight is a phenomenal performing kayak on flat water and up to class one Rapids. It would perform very closely to your dagger Stratos in speed, not quite as fast, but very good performing. I don’t think you could take it up to class2 Rapids. If you are a strong paddler, you could probably make it, but you will take on a substantial amount of water. When I do anything over class one, I switch over to the explorer 380x, which will go up to class 4 Rapids. Unbelievable boat for that purpose. Hey Captain Steve - I’m sure you could file down or cut the fin, but I wouldn’t bother. Honestly, most of my paddling is without the rear fin. It’s not like taking a fin off of a paddle board . . . , that would not work at all as the paddle board would be all over the place. The RazorLite paddles wonderfully without the fin. It’s more maneuverable and tracks straight nicely. I only use the rear fin if I’m paddling in strong cross winds or currents, otherwise I don’t use. Hope this helps. Safe adventuring!

@HomelessOnline A few more questions……What is your height and weight? How much weight in camping gear do you expect to carry, typically for what you were describing it is about 70 to 80 pounds. Are you comfortable with a kayak that is a little bit tippier and fast performing, or would you be more comfortable in a kayak that is a little slower, extremely stable, even with the ability to stand up in while underway? Do you think it will be in extremely shallow water? That is 2-6 inches deep much of the time?

Hi there Homeless Online - I believe since you are new to kayaking, and you want to carry up to 100 lbs. of gear + standing is enticing, but paddling slow is a detraction - the FastTrack is probably the best option for you! The FastTrack 385FT bit.ly/3ecBQ1V is more of a hybrid, do everything kayak. It still is fast paddling, just not as fast as the RazorLite, but much faster than the Explorer. This is a great do everything starter boat + one that you will use even when you are more advanced. Over time, you will probably want to supplement the FastTrack with other inflatables, which is totally doable since they take up so little space. I have 7 myself. Hi Gareth! Thanks for watching and commenting! Good question. The RazorLite is plenty stable (Primary and Secondary stability) for just paddling in flat water or in and around waves generated by other boat traffic. I’m 185 lbs. but if you are a heavier paddler, say 250 lbs, the RazorLite will become more unstable and unsure in rougher conditions. Also, if you want to be able to move around the boat, by sliding forward or getting on your knees, the RazorLite will not perform as well either. The FastTrack 385 will paddle a little slower, but it will offer significantly more stability. You just need to weigh if you want speed or stability. I believe the FastTrack will be the better boat if what you are looking for is an all around, do everything boat for any type of paddler with a wide range of paddling conditions. Let me know if I can answer any other questions. Here’s the links for both boats: bit.ly/3ecBQ1V bit.ly/3Enpq1z Safe adventuring out there!

@@KayakCliff Hi, thanks for your response Cliff. I think the Fastrack may be better for me. I want a stable platform for doing intermittent photography and video footage while kayaking and I also intend to get a drone soon and take that out for getting some drone footage of some of my kayaks. Stability is this the prime factor for me. The other advantage of the Fasttrack 385 is the option to use it tandem, which I would want to do some of the time (although it will mostly be used solo). If the sea is too rough I won’t go out but I’d want a kayak which can cope with a modest degree of swell and waves when I use it on the sea.

Hi Aryn - I think that totally depends on your paddling experience. I would not take this boat out off shore if it was more than 1 - 2 foot seas, basically just gently rolling swells with light wind. I’ve launched off beaches often with my other sit on top 12-14’ kayaks for years. Also I would not go far offshore. I would make sure I knew what the wind / weather forecast is. I plan to take this boat to the beach, next time I go to the coast. If weather is right, I’m going to try it out. Maybe make a video on it to see how it performs. Safe adventuring out there!

Thanks for watching and commenting Roger! All I can say is to just try out the 393RL and see for yourself. You can certainly return if you are not satisfied. I think Sea Eagle has a 3 or 4 month return policy. Now, when I look at the label inside my kayak it says 250lbs. max and I think it is referring to the paddler, because it then says 500 lbs. paddler and gear. I think anything over 250 in the center of the boat is too much for most paddlers. I have had two separate paddlers in mine that are 250 - 260 and they did fine, however, it was a little “squirrelly”. Let me know what you experience and find out! no

Hi 👋 there Jon - The razor light is rated for 250 pound peddler, that would be weight in the middle of the boat. Evenly distributed weight, the boat will hold up to 500 pounds paddler & gear. I would recommend the FastTrak 385FT or the Explorer 380 X. The fast track will be the better performing boat in terms of speed of paddling. It will also hold 635 pounds. The Explorer will hold the most amount of weight, but will paddle a little bit slower than the fast track. Because the fast track has smaller diameter pontoons, compared to the explorer - the fast track will give you more interior room in terms of seating (width) space. If you email me at csnedeker@me.com or text at 972-837-7122 - I can forward to you a couple video clips of my friend in the fast track and he is 265 pounds. Performed beautifully with him.

Plenty of triathlons. Bad knees now, hence the direction of paddling. This kayak is mentioned elsewhere as being for intermediate +. That is not me, ... but I am prepared to put in the time on this unit as a "trial" before maybe/maybe not moving to a surf ski. I am in Hong Kong, so a surf ski purchase would also require a club membership for storage. Not cheap. No storage at home. Hence the bonus of the storage with this. Mainly coastal in good weather. Occasionally traveling with it (airline pilot), when the occasion may permit. Thanks in advance. Good health to all.

Hello Rick in Hong Kong! I think you will find that the RazorLite fits your needs perfectly. It’s the perfect balance of speed, agility and stability in a performance oriented kayak. Even if you are new to kayaking, you’ll find it’s plenty stable after about 15-30 minutes of initial paddling. Keep in mind, if your ultimate goal is a surf ski, that boat is around 23’’ wide. The RazorLite is 28’’ wide. Every novice paddler I put into the RazorLite is confidently paddling in just a few minutes. How would a 6.4" inch person fit in this? This tech is actualy pretty old, with the military looking into inflatable planes that ejected pilots and scouts could inflate and fly to safety or observe the area.

Hi there Micah, that’s fascinating history, thank you for sharing! Pretty much everything comes from the space initiative or the military. I think this technology entered the consumer level in the last 5 to 10 years. From what I’ve read, the full impact of dropstitch technology has not fully been realized at the consumer level. In the future, I think you will see tents, and all types of other things come from this technology. As far as a 6 foot four peddler, I think that is doable in the RazorLite, however you are reaching the maximum threshold. The bigger question is what is your weight? I think once you get over 230 pounds, you need to be comfortable with a boat that will be more tipsy. Take care and safe adventuring!

No problems at all. Now, if it is a 100lb. dog with super long nails that need cutting, that might be a problem, but I don’t think so. Hello, I have been borrowing advanced elements epedition elite and do kayak in the rain at times, is there a cover for your kayak or how would you deal with rain?
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there Natalie! Thank you for watching and commenting. This kayak is totally open to the elements. Not a big deal to pull ashore and tip it over to drain if you need to. It would take quite a bit of water to accumulate to where you would even notice it. So, a light rain, likely would not visibly fill the boat up. Hope this helps, safe adventuring out there!

What MPH winds would you say it would handle? I have the Advanced Elements Airvolution that gets blown around in slight breeze and is horrible going against breeze. Same with the Sea Eagle 300X. Wondering also if being 6ft 130lbs is a factor....

Hello Toledo, I typically only paddle in 15 mile an hour or under winds. I prefer 0 to 10 mile an hour winds. It depends where you are paddling. If you are in a sheltered Bay with land blocking the wind. You can paddle just about anytime. If you are in a big open body of water and you have total exposure to the wind, I would not do anything above 10 to 15 mph. Of course, if you are a very light peddler, sometimes it makes sense to weigh the kayak down with a cooler or some other gear. See if it performs differently for you then.

What are your thoughts about using this kayak for fishing?
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you for watching and commenting! I believe the RazorLite would be a good kayak for fishing, pretty much an only sit down boat for fishing. You could put an milk crate behind you with a couple rod holders in it and reach behind you to grab a single rod at a time to sit down cast from the boat. If you want to stand up, I would move up to the fast track line of kayaks. The benefit with a RazorLite, is that you are going to have the fastest boat possible and you will be able to reach more fishing spots with less effort!

kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKiYi5uZqLJrrMk Funny you should ask, I just put this review video out two days ago on the fast track line of kayaks. I believe this boat would be the best all-around boat for fishing. Paddles very efficiently, just slightly slower than the RazorLite, but affords the fisherman the ability to stand up and site fish, while also having much more payload capacity.

Greenland paddle?
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi 👋 there Mark! I’ve always wanted to try out a Greenland paddle. From what I know about them, which is not much, I think one would work well with this kayak. Like I said, maybe one day I will get one and try it out. I hear they’re pretty cool and a lot easier on your body for extended days of paddling.

@@KayakCliff A drawback with mine is that it drips more, maybe because it has no grommets. Another possible drawback is that the surface area of the blade is not all at the end so it feels deceptively ineffective. Not so good for power moves or quick bursts of speed. I used an Okinawan paddle which is very similar, during a dragon boat race, however it is half a paddle since your thigh hugs one edge and racers paddle on one side or the other. I guess it is what you grow up with. A Greenland style paddle makes less noise through the water which makes it easier to sneak up on critters in the water. Try one and make a video. I recommend a real wooden one, but there are two nice ones made by Gearlab called the Kalleq and the Akiak which are both light weight. Keep on paddling!

Thanks Mark! It sounds like a Greenland paddle would only be appropriate for an enclosed cockpit kayak. Open kayaks like I’m paddling now, will get a bunch of paddle drip and I hate that!

Cliff , what’s your opinion of the carbon ab51 paddle that comes with the 393RL pro? They sell separately for $149 and I’m wondering how they compare to other options in the same price range.
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there Joe, great question! The AB51 is a great entry level carbon fiber paddle. Certainly better than a aluminum shaft starter paddle. It also has the added length for some of the wider inflatable‘s. My favorite paddle is the aqua-bound fiberglass shaft / plastic blade paddle, however, when I am using the AB51 I do not feel like I’m missing out on a whole lot. It is very slightly heavier, but performs well. IMHO I hope this helps, safe adventuring out there!

@@KayakCliff thank you. If I’m going to upgrade I want the ability to change the length like the AB51 so it works with the 393 or my better half’s wider kayak. Kind of a catch 22 I guess

That's great! I am glad you found something that you like and works for you. Looks like more of a paddleboard to me, I love paddle boarding, but I love kayaking as well. I do like the three separate air chambers on the razor light, just a single air chamber does not offer as much security in case something goes wrong when you are on the water. I’ve read posts where people have commented on storage being in a cool dry area. Is that so and if so what’s considered cool? I live in the low desert. These would be stored in my garage out of sunlight, however it can get 110 or hotter in my garage often in the summer. Would this be an issue?
@KayakCliff
@KayakCliff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi 👋 Joe - Here are sea eagles recommendations from their website on the frequently asked questions page : The best way to store your inflatable is folded, in it's bag, in a clean, dry space and out of reach of mice and other critters. If you must store your inflatable outdoors or in a shed, you can store it in a large plastic bin (or clean garbage can) with a tight lid to keep mice, squirrels and other rodents out. ALWAYS make sure your Sea Eagle is clean and completely dry to prevent mold from growing. It is my personal opinion that storage in hot climates in a garage out of the sun is fine. Like SeaEagle says, I would make sure that rodents are not able to get to your boat. It’s absolutely important that your boat is totally dry before folding and putting away. As with all plastic kayaks, it’s also important to wipe the boat down with formula 3O3 every few months while the boat is being used. I live in Dallas and I am subject to similar summer heat as you are. I have a shed that is out of the elements, where I store a lot of my SeaEagle boats. SeaEagle has excellent customer service and really stands behind their product. They have a three-year warranty and a 4 month return policy that is way above industry average!
