Cessationism 5 (Gifts of Healings) | Daniel Kolenda: Off The Record

In Part Five of "The Heresy of Cessationism”, Daniel Kolenda looks at the gifts of miracles and specifically healing. Daniel shows how much of what cessationists claim to show that the gift of healing has ceased is based on extra-bliblical assumptions. He then offers a more Biblical perspective on what healing was like in the early church.

When my son was just a brand new baby, I was suffering from a very stiff neck. To the point where I could barely even move my upper torso. I even had to go to the emergency room at a given day because I just couldn't take the pain. They prescribed medication and advised me to sit under a heated lamp and/or apply a heating pad. I just didn't know what to do. I couldn't even carry my baby. But that night the pain was excruciating. I kept thinking, how am I going to take care of my baby? That evening my husband was trying to help me as much as he could. The baby fell asleep and then my husband had to help me get in bed. My husband had to go to work the next morning. While I was laying down all I did was pray in my mind, "please God, please heal me, God. Please help me. I can't take care of my own baby. My husband has to go to work." (Although I knew that he would stay if he needed to but I didn't want him to have to miss work.) I was in that prayer mode, laying there in the dark for maybe half an hour. My husband had fallen asleep already. When all of a sudden, I was pushed from behind. My body went into a sitting position in a supernatural way. I was so startled I screamed! But I started screaming hallelujah, hallelujah. I'm healed, I'm healed. Thank you Lord, thank you Jesus! My husband awoke and also screamed. What's the matter? What's happening?Of course, the lights were off so he couldn't see what was going on or that I was even now in a sitting position moving my head vigorously left and right. He thought someone had come into our bedroom. We were living in the city of Chicago. He thought a burglar had gotten into our apartment. I happily reassured him, no, honey, it's okay, God has healed me, God has healed me. I was crying and filled with so much joy and gratitude. I explained to him that I felt that someone pushed me in a sitting position on the bed. It was the Lord's doing. This happened in 1991. Praise the Lord! He is a miracle working God! My neck is still great!

I suffered for 5 years of diverticulitis infections,every year i would end up in hospital for 5 years,and demonic attacks along with it,and heart problems,attacks in my sleep,would wake up gasping for air,with demon faces as i woke up,even full on demons manifesting to me,got bunch of prayers.. would see others healed of things, but not me,i questioned why, God began to speak to me that he was doing a bigger healing in me, healing me from fear, worry,doubt, teaching me long-suffering..exct..he was healing my emotions,by allowing sickness in my body..one day holy spirit highlighted this scripture to me.john:1:2,he desired for me to be in good health and prosper as my soul prospers..also the story of the 10 leapers were healed physically,but one came back to Jesus and was made whole..inner healing..of our heart and minds.

2 Corinthians 12:7 even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. 2 Corinthians 12:8 Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. 2 Corinthians 12:9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 2 Corinthians 12:10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Not sure if you were in Zambia recently but I think my mum heard that you were and she brought my twins to your conference when you went about preaching in the communities. My twins enjoyed themselves and she said you prayed for them. I am in America, I am asking for prayers that my kids join me sooner than later so we can do all that God has planned for us in this land. I miss them so much. They turned 5 yesterday. This is my earnest prayer and it will be a miracle for me to have my sons with me.

@robertcain3426
@robertcain3426 Ай бұрын
As a continuist, I see problems in the Charismatic movement. Firstly, there are the charletons out for money and fame. They would find it more to do this in a Cessationist church because of the lack of sensationalism, not having the potential of the gifts. Secondly most Charismatic churches abuse the gift of tongues, when they all speak in tongues together. When Paul's admonition was that only two or, at the most, three speak in church. Paul was not hindering speaking in tongues, as he said he speaks in tongues more than anyone. What he meant was don't all speak in tongues IN CHURCH. Because time is better spent in being edified with the understanding mind; a teaching, an exhortation, a prophetic word etc., for the growth of the church in the knowledge of Christ. Lastly, Charismatics seem to have the erronious view that EVERYONE HAS EVERY GIFT. Or that everyone must have some spiritual gift. This is not true. And nor was it ever taught by the apostles. Paul wrote and exhorted believers to seek spiritual gifts, but emphasised that the greatest gift is love. And there is also the gift of generosity. Lastly, most churches erroniously give honor and high position to those with the greater gifts. When Paul wrote to say this is not what is to happen in the body of Christ. We are to honor the more modest parts of the body, 1 Cor 12:23-24, 'and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it'.

These videos are great! As I said before the two most controversial gifts are tongues and healings (in my opinion) they are the two with an (s) at the end meaning there are multiple of each. People put them in a box and it’s part of why they’re misunderstood.

I got to be part of a group that prayed for a hospital in Africa.... the whole hospital was released later that week. It was a TB hospital.... easier to have faith for what you cannot see.... we also went to a burn victim hospital where there were loads of children missing large portions of their skin. I don't think anyone was healed... we all went home with a heavy heart. We will be seeing the greater works soon.... right after major persecution starts. Seek first the kingdom of God... Matt 6:33. The kingdom of God is not that of words but that of power... 1 Cor 4:20... The kingdom of God only comes through much persecution... Acts 14:22.

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh (Matt 12:34). This was spoken by Jesus. A few verses back, the Pharisees had accused Jesus of casting out devils by Beelzebub (vs 24). There are many being oppressed by the devil in many ways and people, like the Pharisees, who try to oppose those actually doing something to set people free and yet, what some care about is to be kind with their words. Just quoted a verse by Jesus calling them a generation of vipers. Was he unkind, unloving or derogatory? Please let's put emotions aside and set the captives free. Pastor Kolenda has decided to do this and yet you ask him to repent for his choice of words. Blessings

Many things that I've noticed with Cessationists, Reformed, and Calvinists is that they want it to match up "word for word, to the letter", which is a manifestation of the religious spirit. We are not to take Scripture by the letter, but by the Spirit, which means "by the message/idea" that is being put forth/portrayed in the passage. But then they ofcourse reject the idea that they have a religious spirit, and some even deny that someone can be manipulated/controlled by a different spirit other than the Holy Spirit when that person is a Christian. They have no idea that their underlying religious beliefs say that they cannot sin due to having Christ. They fail to realize that in order for anyone to sin, they have to fall for temptations, which opens them up to those spirits. So thus they're saying that they never sin or fall for temptations because they have Christ; thus they're saying that they're better than everyone else (remind of you the Pharisees much?).

Preach as many sermons on godly character, loving the poor and needy, showing hospitality, conviction of sin, sharing the gospel - as Jesus and the apostle Paul focused on - as you do about the gifts of the Spirit, and you will begin to have some cessationists (of which I am not one) at least willing to acknowledge your 'biblical insight'. It's shameful to see the love of money and status, lack of godly character, the boasting, that is rampant amongst charismatic leaders. Repent, and begin teaching the commands of Jesus. That is the only common ground.

The thing I think Cessationists need to grasp, here, is that God is not a “cosmic genie.” The reason why Continuationists/Charismatics don’t go around healing everyone is because we can’t treat God’s work through His servants like some kind of divine Pikachu we can throw in a Pokeball at sickness and say “I choose you.”

If I had to believe I had to gather enough people without any doubts to pray for me to be healed, I would never be healed. Lots of people profess faith, but they have no faith. Healing is a result of obedience to repent. For children, it's a matter of their parents repenting. God manifests healing through those he chooses. If you are spirit filled. I've prayed just in faith God would heal someone, and he healed them. I pray for my own healing and receive it. You simply need to step out and do what Jesus said to do. Ask for the Baptism in the Spirit. Get out of churches that deny the Spirit.

14:40 I’m from Africa and I used to think healing is easy and frequent abroad. I had a backup thought that they have the Oral Roberts, T. L Osborns, Cfan, Smith Wigglesworth etc. And also that there are more atheist there therefore GOD will be willing to heal them more to save them but here in Africa many have come to know GOD and are full of unbelief (that was when I thought healing was conditional rather than the Finished works of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST). Until I heard from Reinhard Bonnke and Daniel that others also thought it was easier and frequent here in Africa than abroad. Then I knew that was the thought of the devil.

Actually Daniel a testimony given by on the man of God who led me to the saviour where a young lady she led to the lord Jesus at the hospital he worked during a prayer service was suddenly filled and by the power of the Holy Spirit crying being urged to go lay hands on those who were severely stricken (this was a T.B. patients hospital) ,the story goes she went from ward to ward patients literally being shocked into health that at the end the wards were cleared living empty beds, many were saved that day.

We THANK THE LORD for HIS WORD which is final. THE LORD said “ Go into all the world and preach THE GOSPEL, They that believe, in my NAME will lay hands on the sick and they will recover “ Why listen to a man somewhere who says healing has ceased. That will mean preaching the gospel has ceased too since they go hand in hand in the commission THE LORD GAVE US. THE LORD did not separate them.

How Cessationists differentiate THE GIFT OF HEALING from the God BRINGING ABOUT HEALING is beyond me. Such a delicate exegesis is beyond the plain meaning of the text. In fact this wizardry of Bible interpretation is NEVER EXPLICITLY stated by Jesus or by any of His Apostles. When James tells us to gather some elders together, anoint and pray for a sick person he said nothing about gathering a group of elders who HAVE the GIFT OF HEALING (AT WILL) though without such a provision there would be NO CERTAINTY that this KIND of prayer would EVER be answered. It seems to me that the vital quality of this kind of healing is PRAYING IN FAITH. 14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the PRAYER OFFERED IN FAITH will restore the one who is sick (Jamed 5:14-15) This faith is a response to the WORD OF GOD spoken to the inner man.

Ask for documentation of salvation, if our GOD does not heal, nor hears us anymore that’s no a GOD we want, whatever GOD DID then HES still able today, He took this illiterate man and thought me to read and write praise GOD, saved my Mothers life last month in thru Jesus name , He’s still a wonder-filled wonderful wonder working GOD, no documentation needed all glory be to our Good Father who loves us more than we can imagine amen

Jesus said He could ONLY do the (miraculous) works He "saw" the Father doing. He did not heal anyone by virtue of some SUPERNATURAL gift He could use whenever and ON whomever he wanted. He had to do it out of a VINE-BRANCH dependence on the Father. It is the same principle with the other spiritual gifts like PROPHESYING. When a person had the "GIFT OF PROPHECY" did this mean he had the power to prophesy ON TAP and could utter a never ending stream of prophecy whenever and however long he chose?

Why would we be preoccupied with preserving the flesh. It is indeed what separates us from our heavenly presence with God. Even so, it sounds like God desires all to be healed, but yes indeed solely that He may be glorified. God sovereignly acts with healing upon those according to His good pleasure. John Newton, the writer of the words to the great hymn Amazing Grace, wrote "I was blind and now I see". How do you define healing? John Newton was never physically blind, yet would admit to his spiritual blindness. A miracle, by nature is extraordinary, unusual and uncommon. The more common miracles become, the less they can be defined as a miracle, since they are now common. Beware of those who would claim a healing in order to bring profit and attention to themself. Likewise in salvation, God sovereignly chooses according to His good pleasure those whom He will save. Even so He desires all to be saved. 1TI 2:1-4

Thanks for making it clear that Cessationist understandings are all over the place on this issue and are certainly not aligned with scripture. It amazes me that cessationists don't look at their beliefs and realise that they are premised on unbelief. God doesn't do this, God can't do this, this is not for today. This is the word of someone else, not the word of God where Jesus teaches that Mark 9:23 is the reality. And we have a God with whom Luke 1:37 is said. Or Matthew 7:11 is the teaching. Or regarding the Holy Spirit and his gifts Luke 11:13. How is it that they can say "it's not for today"?

Even Jesus did not heal everyone. When he went into the pool, there was only one that's recorded that was healed; and also it tells us that Jesus obviously did not just heal anytime he chose to because in Luke 5:17 it says that when Jesus was teaching that the power of the Lord was present for healing, which obviouslymeans it was not always present. We also know that Jesus said he doesn't do anything unless he sees the Father first doing it, which means He was not just rubbing around doing whatever He wanted.

This is such a basic truth. Very necessary that you mentioned it. What did Jesus say to those who used the gifts and ministries without hearing from the Holy Spirit? He said, I don't know you, you workers of unrighteousness!

The point in these verses in Matthew 7:21-24 is NOT the misuse of the gifts; although we should all seek to be led by the Holy Spirit and move only as the Father directs. However, just like anything we do for the Lord should be led by the Holy Spirit; but yet any believer could mis-teach or mis-speak out of a zeal for the Lord, or because of spiritual immaturity and Jesus is NOT going to send them away for those reasons. Matthew 7:21-24 is talking about people that do NOT really know Him but are doing works in His name. They are religious people who may know a LOT about Him, but they have no personal relationship with Him; they are not walking in His power and therefore have a form of Godliness but are denying His power to change and transform them, thus they walk in lawlessness and even their good deeds and works are done in the flesh and are like filthy rags! But while they confess Him as Lord, they don't REALLY KNOW HIM!@@theostehle9337

@BryanCurtis69 Amen, And He was sinless and in perfect tune to the Father's voice, but praise God that He is changing us day by day from glory to glory so we can represent Him to the world He loves and died for. If we would die to the world and our self, our desires and our will (truly crucified with Christ) He could truly live in us and hear more clearly. Thank God we grow in grace and knowledge and learn to hear Him better every day! It is my biggest prayer to hear Him clearer and clearer everyday and to see what the Father is doing every moment so I can do ONLY what I see Him do, but until that day comes all I can do is read, study, pray, listen, act, repent and realign! Praise God for His grace and mercy!

This has been a wonderful series. I don’t think I have heard you misquote a single verse of the Bible. Romans 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. I don’t think Paul is talking about physical; natural gifts, which are revocable, but the gifts of mercy and grace to the disobedient. Talking about spiritual gifts from Heaven which God gives to us under the new covenant.

Obviously you don't know this but your view and cessationists are the same on this issue: God is the one doing the healing. I wish you would link something to show who these 'cessationists' are who don't believe God can't or doesn't heal. I haven't met them or seen a video where someone says God can no longer do such miracles. There must be many videos on YT where a prominent Christian clearly states that God no longer does miracles ( I presume that since you say that is their stance). Could you post a link to one of these videos?
