Having grown up I Edmonton, I can remember all the way back to the earlier version, where you get to see the outside of the station, then they go inside, and you see a control panel, the switches moving down, the light fading, and the narration saying something like, "and as we come to the end of our broadcast day and turn the lights down at CFRN, we wish you a very pleasant good night" followed by that same clip of "God Save the Queen." Since that was well before the days of the home VCR, I doubt whether there is footage of that sign off.

I had no idea that John Berry ever did regular news! I always remember him as a 'slightly' portly weather man. I understand he is a Chef these days.

It seems like local TV really fostered a sense of community back then. Both CTV stations in Alberta seem basically the same these days.

I had always wanted to get this station by E-skip in Detroit. They had an ERP of over 600,000 watts (far more than any other Low-VHF on the continent), so I thought I had a chance. Never did get it. I have a letter from CFRN where they let me know that I did not see them - they were showing Bionic Woman instead of Sunday Late Movie. Got a letter from CFSS in Saskatchewan verifying it was them, instead. Interesting that they played God Save the Queen, but NOT Oh Canada. Ontario stations played Oh Canada, with Windsor 9 playing both Oh Canada and Star Spangled Banner.

Never saw the SSB on Windsor 9, but that was probably during their CKLW days.

They probably played O Canada in the morning (sign-on) and God Save the Queen at night (sign-off).

I remember watching on channel 3 in peace river. as a kid back then I was never allowed to stay up past 10pm and occasionally I'd be given the greenlight for an all nighter and I would watch whatever crappy movie was on the late late show and force myself to stay awake until the news brief and sign off...then I was wide awake 2 hours later at sign on and watch that creepy show with the colored hankerchiefs on little wires being flung around in unison to this weird synth music...forget what the show was called...

Did anyone ever figure out what this show was called? I remember it and it bugs me!

I wondered why Edmonton police, of all places, had to talk about riot control. Then I remembered..... they used to win Stanley Cups there. :-)

When the Blue Jays won the World Series for the second time in 1993 there was actually a riot in Saskatoon. It took place on 8th Street, one of Saskatoon's major business districts. Police ended up using tear gas to break up the crowd, and arrested 14 people.

was there any bumpers from the late 60s early 70s? If there is I'd love to see them. I saw the 60th anniversary show and saw very old clips of CFRN including the late 70s early 80s egg logo that it was known for. Anyone have these old bumpers or know of any?

Does anyone remember the Sunwapta Sam jingle in the morning on radio? I think it starts."on the double get up, it's time to march with Sam"

I wonder what O Canada national anthem film CFRN used in the first and second half of the 1980s.

This newscast was from May 25, 1984, a few days after the Oilers ended the Islanders' Stanley Cup run. How do you pronounce CFRN's old owners' name? It's easier to pronounce 'CTV GlobeMedia' than 'RN's old owner's name! ;)
