CGI 3D Animated Planet Unknown Short Film by Shawn Wang. Featured on www.cgmeetup.net/home/planet-u...
At the end of the 21st century mankind were facing global resource depletion. Space Rovers were sent out to find potential inhabitable planets.
Planet Unknown is a passion project from director Shawn Wang. Animated over eleven months it was the final project for Shawn’s course at the Communication University of China. The attention to detail is exceptional with jaw dropping renders. Both the pace of the film and the use of shots is impeccable.
Planet Unknown recently won Best Animated Short at the Burbank International Film Festival.
Software's: Cinema 4D, plugin TurbulenceFD and Octane for C4D were heavily used for most of the tasks. Houdini was used to fracture things. Then Zbrush for sculpting, Mari for texturing, After Effects for compositing, and Premiere for editing. Python and JavaScript were used for scripting in C4D, Mari and AE, which helped speed up the process a lot.
It took around 4 months to build the 3D assets. Then Shawn moved on to animatic previews. Each individual shot got more clear and problems to solve became more specific. Then the rest of the time were mainly focused on building scenes, keyframe animation, FX simulation, rendering and compositing.
Director biography: Shawn Wang is an animation director and 3D artist. Having a passion for CGI and storytelling, Shawn loves creating narrative visuals through all types of media.

Outstanding!! The theme may be a familiar story, but the look, the action, the scenery are all really well done. Did you notice the robots get a little grungier with each misadventure? Cool touch. I love the sound effects, and the theme music is well-chosen. Great work.

its very unlikely from scientific PoV for a solid planet to have such meteor belt unless it was recent (under 50-100 years) catastrophe..large bodies naturally get rid of such belts . Uranus and alike do not count, first that's ice belt consisting from very thin powder, second, being 8 times larger than earth, it got same gravity force, because whole planet is "made" of ammonia snow
@Private_Colceri
@Private_Colceri 7 жыл бұрын
+EllAntares You're exactly right. During the video I had actually guessed the planet was in the very early stages of becoming a life bearing one. Being that (This is still a theory, but generally the most accepted) Earth is generally theorized as to have gained water from a relentless shower of asteroids, in which at the end of the video it could be noted that there's steam rising from the debris and clouds forming. That's probably the best way to explain the asteroid belt around the planet. Though, I'd be significantly more concerned about how close / large the moon is and the likely scenario that planet becomes a tidal one. (An ocean planet with extreme water fluctuations, I.E tidal waves ripping the surface to shreds every few minutes. As far as my definition on the matter goes.)

A bit late, but despite the constant tidal surges, life would be sustainable on the poles (Assuming the moon as an equatorial orbit) as the surges would be unlikely to reach it.

I'd love if short films nowadays wouldn't just aim to be cute and have some action, but an actual story as well. I remember the days when a lack of CG technology made that a neccessity. The story was the only thing keeping the viewer engaged. Now, it's like ... 'who needs any story anyway'? Just being cute doesn't work out for humans and it doesn't work out for short films. I will have forgotten this one within two days max, because there's nothing to remember.

That 'unknown planet' is pretty much the young Earth. The Moon has already been formed by this time and our young planet was being bombarded for some time, most likely bringing life/water with it. That 'moon' will be vital in the planets seasons and currents in its oceans some day. So the process of what happened here on Earth repeats. Except this time we wont have to wait millions and millions of years for life to evolve. Pretty cool ^_^

Its a planet similar to Earth, in that it can support life and has a gravity close enough to Earth's. In real life, that is what space programs are looking for: a planet that can support life(as evidenced by the plant). The moon, like what the other commenter mentioned, is not our moon. The reason why it appears larger is because it is closer to that planet than ours is to our planet. This may be a hint about its own gravitational field, as well as the meteors, but it is similar enough to Earth that it was chosen to have these robots sent there.
@kingmercyful7975
@kingmercyful7975 4 жыл бұрын
Rajuan Dacio well, did you know the moon is gradually getting further from our planet? I’d imagine this is earth in the distant past, when the earth was still in development and these robots were alien probes with the same mission we have today.
@rd3299
@rd3299 4 жыл бұрын
@@kingmercyful7975 A bit odd given the premise of the video is that Earth as we know it has been spent so we dispatched robots like these two on search missions into space. What you are saying brings us to a way more complex premise which involves playing around with the space-time continuum. However, you've got the benefit of the doubt in that the video does not confirm nor deny any of our theories.

multiple things i didn't understand: seperate boxes for separate seeds: if they're in a resource crisis, shouldn't they have made the devices reusable instead of putting a seed in each device for 1-use-only? asteroids: the plant was clearly growing because it had an atmosphere to help it grow, so why such big asteroids? they would've burnt up. the use of seeds: if the device is calculating whether the seed has the things required for it or not, why not make them fixed values from an average calculation gathered from seeds instead of using the actual seed?

NickTheCeratosaurus why cant humanity expand? when humanity wonders if there is other life out there where is it we look to. we look to the stars. i say we should at least have a little peek at the worlds that might hold life. mankind is constantly trying to expand, and at our current rate we may just run out of room on earth. and i dont want to ever have to share a bedroom again.
