Episode 35 - The North American launch of the Sega Saturn. The Saturn was surprise-launched on May 11, 1995 along with 6 games. Virtua Fighter was the pack-in, while Daytona USA, Panzer Dragoon, Clockwork Knight, Worldwide Soccer: Sega International Victory Goal Edition, and Pebble Beach Golf Links were also available.
Show Notes:
- This was the first episode for which the gameplay footage was recorded in RGB instead of s-video.
- This was only the second episode featuring the Sega Saturn.
- This was the fourth episode covering the launch of a console.
- The video sequence featuring Takenubo Mitsuyoshi is from a Karaoke commercial, and is the property of Sega Games Co., Ltd.
- This was the first episode featuring the new channel art in the intro, although the old art is still (temporarily) being used in the end credits.
- The Sony PVM is not currently on my desk because I am using an XRGB-mini setup, but I still have the PVMs.
- No, I do not smoke. The ashtray on my desk is a Japanese arcade ashtray that use to keep small things in.
- This is the first episode featuring “show notes” in the description.
All box art featured in CGQ videos comes from The Cover Project, fount at thecoverproject.net. Check them out for all of your video game insert needs.

Daytona USA had the coolest 90s racing game music ever... DAYYYTONNAAAA.... I remember when I first had Saturn, A LONG time ago, I discovered the horse cheat code in some booklet that contained a bunch of video game cheat codes. Yes, people actually bought booklets for cheat codes instead of surfing the internet back in the 90s. I remember it was a soft cover book and it contained various cheat codes for probably $10.

@THELEGENDARYK2
@THELEGENDARYK2 8 жыл бұрын
+Classic Gaming Quarterly Yeah no Stunner included which I guess was kinda dumb. A lot of things were kinda dumb in those days. I never owned a Stunner either we only played the Cops with the controller cursor. Always liked it anyways, like your comment on Ridge RacerVDaytona, Virtua Cop oozed personality and was at times hilarious. Me and my friends loved that 3 pack. Also was totally ignorant of the old fatter controller. I was the only person I knew with a Saturn. My 2nd controller was some 3rd party Super Pad trash.

The 3-D games they were able to make are SO impressive for the time. The ability for them to do what they did with that hardware is nothing short of wizardry. Burning Rangers is a personal favorite. Obviously Nights into Dreams and the Panzer Dragoon series. But they had so many great first party games on that platform.

Sweet video man. It's such a shame they botched the launch of this machine, because it had far more potential than people seem to realise. It really was a powerful, and pretty capable machine in the right hands & it always bums me out to think what could have been. Regardless, the Saturn is probably my favourite system ever.
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 жыл бұрын
+The Unfunny Chameleon I agree. I think that the story of the Saturn is really a tale of "what could have been?". What if Sega had partnered with Sony? What if Sega had waited to launch the Saturn properly? What if Kalinske hadn't been edged out of the company? This was actually a bummer of an episode for me to make because I was a Genesis guy as a teenager.
@seanmckelvey6618
@seanmckelvey6618 8 жыл бұрын
Classic Gaming Quarterly Exactly. I like to think they could have done better by waiting to launch it on the originally intended date, they would have had more games ready & had more time to market and build hype. But the concept of Sega partnering with Sony really makes you wonder, would Nintendo have even been able to compete?

Christian B I think when it came to the Saturn Sega simply panicked and shot first. I don't think either Sega or Nintendo realised how much of a threat Sony really was until it was almost too late. I think the Saturn would have been far more successful had they not used Quads over triangles like the PS1/N64. At the very least it would have helped third parties. But yeah, hindsight is a bitch.

The in-fighting between the Japanese branch and American branch will never cease to amaze me. I'm not going to say Sega would still be making home consoles if it hadn't happened but maybe there's a chance, if Sega of Japan had tried to improve and work with SoA, that Sega would still be a hardware and software manufacturer.

Living in Japan when the Saturn came out made me love the console so much to this day. My Japanese friends were so into it over any other console. Not as enjoyable until you are able to play Japanese ported games on it since most of the good games never made it to North America. Good review!

Oh, I thought I was the only brazilian who would have noticed your Senna's hat. Fortunately I wasn't, as there are other brazilian fans of you out there :) Great video. Now, what about a Sega Dreamcast's launch episode? I'm sure it would be an episode full of content, considering there were two teams working independently(Sega of Japan X North America) and how it ended in one of the most amazing line-up launches in history to date.

man your sega system coverage is just a walk down memory lane for me lol, i remember asking my parents for it for either birthday or christams, seeing as my birthday is in december it could have been either and i had the virtua fighter and daytona pack in plus virtua cop. i played the hell out of the clockwork knight demo but never played the full game. i still remember, i was in middle school and my mom convinced my dad to buy it for me. there i was with my parents at walmart, anxiously waiting for them to get a console after my parents had debated which one they would get me, and waiting for the moment i could grab the bag with my sega saturn in it. when we got home i unplugged my genesis and hooked up my saturn, i played the hell out of daytona lol oh how i wish sega would get back into the console business, i know it would cursh them financially right now but an old sega fanboy can dream.....

Excellent episode. That XRGB Mini makes a big difference, too! I just got one for myself and have nothing but good things to say about it... It's absolutely the closest you can get to a nice PVM. Also, the Saturn kicks major ass. No system has ever been given so much love by arcade developers for ports of great, classic fighting & shooting games. I always wanted one as a kid, but never got one until I became a MAN... Or, maybe I never became a man until I got a Saturn?? -- Well either way, I didn't have one when I was a boy.

I loved Sega products. I am in my late 30's and experienced everything that was discussed in the video. I was so gun-ho for Sega, I (My Parents!) bought a 32X and a Sega CD! That system was a complete mess of wires and ugliness. I skipped buying the Saturn for a Play Station instead felling burned by 2 failed Sega products. I am now a loyal Play Station player. (With a Wii for the kids.) Love your shows.

+James Schmidt I heard its succes in Japan (and in the East in general) was due to lots of JRPGs. Some (or many?) of them were really outstanding, like Grandia and Lunar remake. But in the US it was Berny Stollar, who refused to give green light to localizing JRPGs, as he thought the games were too niche and failing to portray all the graphics potential (he led the same policy in SCEA prior to joining Sega).

+James Schmidt The Saturn was huge in Japan. The console even made cameos in some of my favorite animes of that era. You can see Asuka playing Hikari's Saturn in an episode of Evangelion! Sakura Taisen for one was huge over there as well as many, many other titles that never came out here cuz SOA was being run by idiots after '96.

Actually, the worst part for me was that I was a college student who couldn't afford to pick up a lot of the awesome import games on the Saturn and Playstation because import games cost so much. I later was able to pick them up once I had disposable income to do so but many games had also increased in value due to their popularity or scarcity.

Late to the party, but WOW. I really enjoyed this episode. The combination of history and game impressions segments really hooks me, and I am a huge fan of your narration/delivery. Since I skipped the Saturn (in favor of the PlayStation), I honestly didn't know a lot about it-- other than the basic history (cost, questionable launch decisions, final outcome). It's always great to learn more things. I had not really considered how the launch date change had affected software releases, nor did I realize the drought that occurred shortly after the surprise launch. I'm guessing that it might have been at least a bit frustrating for early adopters to have to wait for the software train to catch up. My decision to skip the Saturn was based on feeling like I got hosed after dropping the cash on the 32X, and that was after feeling like the SEGA CD never really lived up to its potential. I enjoyed (and still do enjoy) the Genesis, but my confidence in SEGA after the SCD and 32X all but disappeared... whereas the PlayStation blew me away in mid-1995, when I first played one. I know that I missed out on a few games (and probably would've liked the Pebble Beach game, based on your demonstration/comments), but I still don't feel all that compelled to seek one out and experience it for myself. Congrats on another quality video!

+Peter Skerritt Hey Pete! As always, thanks for watching. I think your experience is a common one. A lot of people felt unsatisfied with their purchase of the Sega CD, and then felt straight-up burned by the 32X, so it's understandable that those people were going to be hesitant when Sega released a $400 console less than a year later. I do think you should check out the Saturn if you can pick one up on the cheap, though. Thanks for the comment!

downphoenix Haijime Satomi current President and Chief Operating Officer of SEGA Holdings,Co,Ltd He SAVED the whole company, helped reorganize and restructure SEGA's Arcade Amusement business(whom Okawa nearly destroyed after forcing SEGA to go software), brought in new market ventures for SEGA, allowed them to buy TMS Entertainment, revived SEGA Toys, helped SEGA pay off $3 billion in debt, revived SEGA's old IPs for protection, revived Saturn and Dreamcast to be steadfastly protected, Brought SEGA into the Theme Park business,Casino business,expanded their Redemption Game Machine business, not to mention grow SEGA to be a much more sustainable and larger company than they were in the CSK years. People underestimate Satomi. He's hands down SEGA's Best CEO. People are so hung up on the "Consumer Game Business" and "Panchinko" divisions, thinking if Sega's 3rd division fails, the whole company will go down without realizing that its a very tiny division of the whole company and can be easily treated as collateral. The 3rd party division of SEGA is utterly worthless and meaningless. The general Malaise of the COD infested industry. overseas poor management in America and Europe and the conflicted and divided fanbase(Whom most of them aren't real SEGA fans, but instead Wolves in Sheep's Clothing who are at heart console fanboys who want SEGA to only be a publisher for their favorite platform,) are the reason why SEGA can't be seen publicly as the legend and GREAT gaming brand they are. Satomi WANTS to bring SEGA back into consoles: "Question: How are you going to rebuild the Sega brand and how long do you think that is going to take? Satomi: As I said before, the Sega brand first became famous as an arcade machine and then with the home video game consoles. The Sonic character was largely popular with those machines and consoles. Unfortunately, we eventually withdrew from the home video game console business. However, our name and brand is still out there because of the famous characters from people’s childhood. We would like to change, adjust or shift our product, brand and business with the current era to be a leader again in the future." Translation: We want to get back into the hardware business and are willing to change our business structure to do so. He just needs SEGA fans, the TRUE ones to come out of the woodworks that have been hiding.

Tornado1994 okay then why did Sega recently have a lot of layoffs in the west and shut down most of their mobile projects? If they were really transitioning back to console development, then why the layoffs?
@Tornado1994
@Tornado1994 8 жыл бұрын
downphoenix The layoffs were for the 3rd party consumer games division. Shutting down mobile games is extremely common. It's pretty asinine to think that doing so is sigificant. Whenever a Mobile game is shut down, it's immediately replaced by another. BTW, SEGA recently posted a profit in case you didn't notice. www.segasammy.co.jp/english/pdf/release/201603_3q_tanshinhosoku_e_final.pdf
