The roofers have come, and it was amazing to see them up on our beautiful and complicated roof. We also check out a couple of great Brocante finds, and talk about the battle against Ivy.

Call me crazy but I would get into an entire 20 minute video, or more, roof tour! Slate roofs are wonderful in themselves but your chateau has such interesting angles and design. Add some views of the chimneys, lightning rods, dormers…the things us average fold will never get a chance to see up close! Another chateau owner sends a drone up for weekly, or maybe it’s monthly, roof inspections but he has only provided small glimpses of the drone footage. Anyway, thanks for sharing your home with the world❣️

Cats would be good in the Chateau , not just to keep rodents at bay but cats can be a good comfort for some students who may have a little homesickness at first. I live in Eastern Canada and around my city many nursing homes have cats just to give a homey feeling , they wander around, often sleeping on the foot of clients beds( those who want them to) . It also means they don’t have to have traps or chemicals around which is not homey . 😂🤣The trees are amazing it would be great to find out what they all are. There is an app that identifies plants and trees by taking a picture or scanning the leaves and or flowers. Glad to hear you have help on the way to get some jobs done and battle the Ivy, it’s insidious . Take care, stay safe and well.

I do know that you have to cut the ivy at the ground level and then what is going up the tree or wall will die. It is harder to try to remove all the ivy up from the bottom while it is still alive. I suggest that you go around and take out the ivy from the base and allow the rest to die before you exhaust yourself trying to tear it off while it is at full strength.

I agree... when the ivy is dead and dry, it breaks apart easily, so you can tear it piece by piece, instead of taking the whole thing down.

I love it when chateau owners take their cameras into the brocantes. Check out Chateau la Ferte owner who has vlogs on how she fixed missing bits by making molds of these pcs,pouring plaster in,and you peel the material away. Yes, the mold is made of a certain type of putty,like play dough. She goes through the steps.

ohh the ivy! I feel you guys! Just this weekend I made a round in our garden clearing all the ivy... Bane of my existence, well at least for this weekend haha! Pro tip: use a crowbar to pry the vines from the trunks where possible, it made such a difference to me!

You can quite easily mold new sections of an ornate picture frame with a latex material that paints on. When dry, you peel it off and then using resin, you mold the new piece, cut to fit and apply to damaged area. There must be KZbin video about this. I used to do it back in the 1970s when I worked in an antique store.

Here in the US there is a product you brush on the end of a cut vine or bush where you have cut it and it kills the vine. You might try that on the ivy. It doesn't take much. I used it successfully on an invasive wisteria and other bush that were both taking over. Since you just brush it on the cut pieces, it doesn't harm nearby plants.

everyplace you take out the ivy, plant something in its place or the ivy will regrow. give ivy competition so it has to fight for its spot, but with something that it will compete with and often times win, the ivy will be caged and not able to regrow. find the seeds for those old big beautiful trees as i would start a tree nursery to sell them or give them away. all kinds of things can be done for those gardens once you know what to design. i am a permaculturist and i am sooooo jealous of those trees. good luck.

Taking care of the roof is really really a good thing. After that you can take your time to renovate the rest of the chateau in style. You should also get a tree surgeon to advise you on what to do with the trees. So he can give you a better idea of the original design of the garden and tell you which trees are dead or need to go (because are about to die or could fall on one of your buildings).

Leslie, take a wax impression of a section that is whole and use the mold to press window glaze into the missing shape, then paint..

Hi I too am from Canada, Ottawa area. Woot woot Canada!! I was watching a video the other day where it was showing the cleaning of an old stone building and stairs. It was amazing, the before and after. Every time I see the front of your chateau I see the steps and wish I could come help. The urge is real to come clean them for you, but since I can’t (unfortunately) I thought I would suggest taking a look at this video and see how easy it could be to freshen them up and transform the front of the chateau. I think it wouldn’t be an expensive or hard job to do. But make a big difference and your chateau is so beautiful and I hear it calling out for a pedicure. lol 😝. Anyhow hope you look into this and invest or rent a high pressure washer for a weekend and get into it. There is a chemical that is for removing the mold, that’s the blackness. It will sparkle after. It will also let you see what needs grouting to keep steps from moving or deteriorating. to fix the frame of that mirror, fill a pastry bag with plaster/joint compound and frost the missing areas, a good cake decorator could restore and make a lot of money, royal icing lasts forever too!!!!

There are various hatches in the roof to access the different parts of the roof. Then there were attaching their wood ladder to go up and down.

You know.... that is exactly the conversation we have been having. Normally we're pretty cheap, so that kind of thing is more money than we would spend. But.... with the sheer magnitude of wood to be taken out, and the great need for weed control.... it's hard to argue against the wood chipper.

You need to get some work away volunteers. Just search for work away. You cover room and board and the help you by working in the areas you need. You can request specific skills as well. Great job and the best to you all.

You can actually get a rubber mold kit and make your own mold from one of the existing parts. Then you can recreate those lost portions. I would put a sealer on the other “parts” in case they dry and fall off. I had a couple of frames I cleaned up, then left them the way they were. The antique ambiance fit the pictures and room I put them in. Good luck 🍀 !

Ivy will kill trees! I had a fully grown weeping willow out the front of my farm house in the Veneto Italy.. It rotted it away, I had to have it taken down in the early spring it was just too dangerous. At least removing the scrub and dead branches you will have fire wood for the spring when you arrive!

We'll probably keep it as a restaurant. If our little school ever started taking 30-40 students, then we'd probably put walls on it and make it our dining hall. But Leslie likes having the students eat in the chateau, it's just a much nicer vibe.

The garden furniture your were sat on during this vlog.... if heavily oxidised... give a good scrub clean then run a hot air gun over the surface. It takes a while to go over the furniture, however the result is worth it... only thing I noticed when doing my own furniture is that the table top when heated up has sunk the level a little, however if your happy with this happening and are happy to tip table after heavy rain fall, you will end up with new looking furniture.

Chemical weed killer (like round up) is no longer sold in France. Some duct tape, a good dose of table salt and some water on top of the cut area will do the trick.

Try and keep your old slates as these new slates are absolutely rubbish I had my roof replaced what a mistake and with the slates they took of my roof they sold them so make do and mend and save your money.

Chateau is beautiful, but in my humble opinion, I think that you should first invest in the roof and all decorative elements on in it. It seems that stone chimneys are crumbling of age and weather.

If you cut the bottom of the Ivy at the base only and remove the roots, the Ivy will die off naturally and be easier to remove. Otherwise it will kill the tree.

True and if you rip off the ivy too vigorously it will damage the tree bark and kill the tree.
