I'm 40 and have known what a whirling dervish is since well before Adam started bringing it up 15 years ago. But then, my uncle was obsessed with whirling dervishes, and he actually ran a school that trained dervishes to whirl, held the World Championship of Whirling Dervishes competition every year, and directed a documentary about them. He also copyrighted the term "whirling dervish" and actually got paid a royalty anytime anybody, including himself, said the words "whirling dervish". He was also super friendly, a chatty drunk, loved to talk about his work, and even had tourettes. Interestingly enough, he didn't bring up whirling dervishes as much as Adam does.

I will say my father is a 74yo boomer and he's handed down many phrases and addages I use on a semi-regular basis, that none of my peers understand.
