The great thing that Chad brought to the Chili Peppers in '88 was his feel. He has the best feel I have ever heard on his songs. Most drummers are just keeping the beat, but Chad sets up an amazing groove with his funky and thrifty feel.

It's amazing how much that sounds like a double bass. I've heard guys do something similar with the floor tom and that made sense to me since it's at least a lower pitch, but I would not have guessed that ghost notes on a snare end up sounding like a kick drum when you play them fast enough. Really cool.

What I notice is that Chad's in fact playing a double bass rhythm with his feet (his hi-hat is closing on the opposite hit of the Bass drum). Because he doesn't do double pedal, there'd possibly be some fluency issues, but replace that hi-hat with a bass drum and he's practically playing BYOB by System of a Down. Chad's so awesome - I need to get this video.

He has a tendency to always play either 8th's or 16th's w his left foot. Probably why his single foot is so fast. But yeah you're right he is doing like an alternating pattern that would translate to double peddle well.
