This video discusses the incident document in Sanzo Maruyama's "Dai Nippon Judo Shi" where Kano studied sumo and pugilism and developed what would be the predecessor of "Kata guruma".

Here’s what it said: “Therefore, the master (Kano) secretly researched the techniques of sumo wrestling and the techniques of pugilism by reading foreign physical education books, and through some grappling, devised a method, with this he succeeded in defeating his opponent. did. This was the predecessor of today's Kata guruma. In addition, the sleeve length for practice during business hours was short, less than half the length of the sleeves currently used at the Kodokan, and the hakama was such that the kneecaps protruded (this was not reasonable from the standpoint of preserving the body, so the instructor changed it to the current one). Because of this, the teacher's body was covered in scratches from the intense daily practice.”

There was a lot more intercultural exchange going on in the martial arts than some "purists" want to acknowledge.

Katagurma was developed by Kanda Kyutaro by improving Totsuka Yoshin's Kinukatugi. You can find Totsuka Yoshin's Hankaigarami paintings, which are similar to Katagurma, by doing an image search. Totsuka Yoshin-ryu is a school of jujutsu from the Edo period. The source of the theory that Kano adopted wrestling techniques is a 2009 Japanese television broadcast, but the source is unknown. Kanda Kyutaro was a student of Totsuka-ha Yoshin-ryu, he devised kataguruma, kibisugaeshi, and morotegari from jujutsu techniques. In 1931, Kyutaro won a Japanese judo tournament using a kataguruma. The Totsuka-ha Yoshin-ryu appears in novels and records as one of the rival schools of the Kodokan. Kyutaro was not allowed to train at the Kodokan because the master of the Totsuka-ha Yoshin-ryu disliked the school, but after the master's death Kanda entered the school.

Interesting. When I was doing Jujutsu and Judo way back in the 1970s and 80's the "modern" self-defence training included how to deal with a boxer. Not karate, not taekwondo, not kung fu etc but boxing.

@RonioFOX oh, it did, but not in any great measure, I agree. In the late 70's, I knew of its existence in my hometown in Scotland (it looked very like Shotokan), England, and the US. Rhee and Hee Il Cho (man of contrasts book 1980/81?) were two of the big names back then.

To call elite combat athletes like Lomachenko, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns or hundreds of Olympic medalists in boxing "dumb animals" reveals a profound ignorance.

Can I point out that unarmed striking like Pugilism/boxing was an Irish martial art not British. They ruled us and copied us or tried to. Hence the pugilist boxing stance is connected with Ireland not Britain. Think about it, Celts were not walking tanks in head to toe armor. Knights had armor covering most of them and were trained in weapons and some ground grappling. Irish had striking as one of our martial arts.

You have to keep in mind that all things existed in the world at the time that whatever martial art was developed. Savate and jiujitsu and karate and boxing and fencing, kung fu and ringen etc. all were around at the same time.

Hi Liam, bowing in Japanese is more common than people think, it’s a salute to show respect, you see it in schools and even in grocery stores, when people enter your home etc. It’s not a form of worship in judo. Hope this helps.
