Well presented and spot on. The pendulum needs to swing back so that the wholesome nature of Judo is not lost.

@ahfmobile Жыл бұрын
@@goodtimes2hellyeah169 they are indeed effective but taking the leg overlaps too much with wrestling. The up side is the spectacular throws we regularly see. The down side is that Judo is diminished. I would like to see leg grabbing waza allowed in lower level competition and not at elite level.

One prominent figure in grappling history is Mataemon Tanabe of Fusen-ryu jujitsu school. His fist challenge with Takisaburo Tobari in 1981( rematch in 1982). Holds victories over some high ranking judoka. Including Yoshitsugu Yamashita (one of Four Guardians). With some matches in 1898 and the last in 1900. Although not enrolled into the Kodokan, Tanabe did have heavy influence on the development of ne-waza and Kosen Judo. Another point of why he is relevant is because Fusen-ryu jujitsu is full system with weapons, unarmed combat. But what do I know.

Chadi, how do you find these rare books? I also believe that we need a new competition categories for Judo: Olympic Judo, kubudo Judo (old school Judo and Jujutsu, with leg takedowns, etc), Nezawa Judo and free Judo (free grappling). This would reunite the BJJ and Judo and allow the effective older techniques to be reintegrated back into the sport/art.

I would let the Olympic rules as they are, but would create a 'freestyle judo' competition set in parallel. Hobby judokas like me would benefit immensely from it, as the real Judo heritage, as a complete martail (well, at leasr grappling) art would be restored. and on the long term it would draw masses into the art as well

@jikkenteki Жыл бұрын
No issues with the analysis, but for the sake of accuracy it should be pointed out that the techniques shown in this book are NOT Hoki-ryu. They come from Katayama-ryu kenjutsu, which is the parent art of Hoki-ryu and HR never included these techniques. In Katayama-ryu these techniques are credited as coming from Takeuchi-ryu. The book these photos came from uses the name “Hoki-ryu Jujutsu” but such an art historically never existed. The author of the book came across the Katayama-ryu documents that had been donated to the city of Iwakuni by the last head of Katayama-ryu before WWII. He recreated them and published this book showing what he thought the techniques were and called the art “Hoki-ryu jujutsu”. In more recent years he seems to have taken to calling it Katayama-ryu Kogusoku but in either case it’s not a historically transmitted art. The original documents however legitimately show the grappling techniques Katayama-ryu.

For the past few years there have been discussions about removing the sport of wrestling from the Olympics! With that being said if that becomes a reality do you think that the full technical syllabus of Judo will make a return in competition regarding all the excluded or banned techniques such as leg grabs as well as extended time for ne-waza.
@epramberg Жыл бұрын
Can I say the quiet part out loud? The Olympic committee destroys everything that it touches. Most recently, the committee took the deeply flawed WKF karate kumite and wrecked it by removing most of the takedowns because "it looked too much like judo." This should sound familiar because the committee thought that judo looked too much like wrestling, so they implemented a rule against leg grabbing. Soon, I suspect, they will outlaw swords in fencing because they look too much like javelins. I grieve every time a new sport is accepted into the Olympics.

Ancient Samurais? Will the real jujitsu stand up? Most people scoff at Aikido, but it's movements are also based on jujitsu techniques against armed combatants (the founder was a jujitsu practitioner). That is why they have those silly-looking overhand open palm strikes which are actually based on how to disarm bladed weapons. I did both aikido and judo while stationed in Japan for 12 years. All things considered, I prefer judo for its physicality.
@Michael-yr5oq Жыл бұрын
There is no real jujutsu the schools were so different from each other. The ancestor school of aikido is very much not typical of jujutsu. And one of the main ancestors of judo (kito ryu) is extremely unusual as well but judo also had the influence of dozens of other schools making it more like the majority of schools.

Jujitsu was an aggressive art of war. Aikido transformed aikijujutsu into a study of motion and used a passive nature to reflect Shinto values. Judo transformed jujitsu from a combat art to a sport art. In Jujitsu you look to break something as you throw the opponent on their head or face then stab or choke them to death. Judo allows for break falls, removed small joint manipulations and trachea crushing methods and eventually removed striking.

Sometimes unarmed samurai were successful against a swordsman. Sometimes not. Jujitsu comes from the sword in principles, techniques and methods. Jujitsu was created for the sole purpose to standing a chance against several enemies with edged weapons. And then t did pretty well hence why it stayed around for several centuries.
