hi charlie. i came up with an idea of fitting all those components into an old gutted computer tower fitted with wheels and with enough cabling to allow it to be pulled out from under the baseboard should any modification or repairs be needed doing
@ChadwickModelRailway3 жыл бұрын
What a brilliant idea. And, you could use the fan to provide additional cooling. Regards Charlie
@TaterRaider3 жыл бұрын
You could also build a drawer and mount the components in there. In either case, be certain to spend the time on cable management - a bunble now saves a rats nest later. Also secure that bbundle on both ends with zip/cable ties, velcro, something to take strain off connectors. My Audio Rack/PC is connected to my desk/keyboard/monitor/etc. in this manner. Leave extra length. Good luck.

An idea for the span of cables then from the layout to the case or Charlie’s draw is to use something called Copex. It’s a flexible conduit that has glands on either end and dose a good job of protecting the wires
@europacifictradersltd37173 жыл бұрын
@@scottmarsden1643 yes there are 3 types , all steel or steel coated with plastic or all plastic, i would go for the steel plastic coating because it does not split with time with diameters of 20mm ( 3/4") or 25mm (1")

Mojo, a very important point. If you are not in the mood, leave it alone! I have made a real pig's ear of some parts of my layout because I was not in the right frame of mind. Sadly, for me, I can't just knuckle down and get on with it. I have to be in the mood. Creating my layout is meant to be a pleasure and if it turns into a chore then I stop. Does the pressure of producing videos take away the pleasure Charlie? I hope not as we all look forward to your posts.

I just build model kits but find model railway channels fascinating to watch even when there is a lot of electronic content it is still interesting. Sometimes you get a complex model kit that can go on for ages because there are tons of details to do before you can progress. At times like that a small simple kit is a nice break. Almost the opposite of the butterfly scenario! As someone mentioned for channel content you have an excuse but as a consumer of your output I appreciate the effort you put in and I am always pleased to see a new vid regardless of the subject.

Great work Charlie. I like the term "Butterfly Modeller", in my family we talk about "being distracted by shiny objects" when rather than doing what you are supposed to do some other activity gets in the way. And at work there was "spending all day sharpening the pencils" - spending lots of time preparing to do some work but not actually doing anything productive. Sometimes you have to give yourself a push to buckle down and do the task that you've been trying to ignore. Of course there is value in mixing up the tasks so that you progress different aspects in parallel and give yourself a break from the usual routine every now and again.

Hi Charlie, another interesting video and very good progress to tackle that tricky project! A couple of really good points there as well about the potential to lose mojo … also the butterfly modelling approach! Also interesting to hear about the more driven/process approach by McKinley and his amazing project! I’ve had experience of all of these over time and realised that we’re all wired slightly differently, each have cognitive differences, and can often end up beating ourselves up over doing certain tasks that others appear to enjoy or find easier! So it’s key to understand our own cognitive diversity, strengths and weaknesses … learn coping mechanisms for the weaknesses. A couple of observations: Taking a step back from a difficult challenge is actually a good thing! Can help you sleep upon a challenge, view it a different way, perhaps allow research for alternative options and eventually develop a better solution. That’s exactly what you’ve done with your own challenge with the awkward boards! Taking a step away over time, moving to other tasks, allowed you time to think and develop your solution. Meanwhile you’ve moved onto other tasks in the meantime, perhaps easier/more fun, before returning. I can also understand the current McKinley approach, the more process driven approach … especially for a larger project … cognitively there’s so much to think about, to simplify this thinking then it helps focus the mind to complete one or two activities for the whole layout, before moving onto the next stage. Both approaches are perfectly acceptable and make sense … and linked to providing a good feeling, enjoyment. I’ve had a mix of both over time … another tactic I’ve also used is to concentrate on one area of the layout, getting to a stage where the mojo begins to wane as ideas and enjoyment reduce, then move onto another activity or part of the layout, before revisiting. Another tactic I’ve also learnt is to have a layout book … including pages for to-do lists, purchase/wishlist … and then date and tick after each job is completed! Also acts as a sort of diary to look back upon with satisfaction to see the progress made. Again, to give a positive feeling, a mojo boost! And fuels the energy to progress another job, one that I want to enjoy at that point in time (while subconsciously thinking about/solving other challenges … either around the layout, or in life!!) I’ve waffled far too much!! But in summary, great point that you raised regarding the butterfly approach, also great to see you solve one of your challenges and and reap the rewards from it … and hopefully a good mental health and well-being boost, and hopefully rewarded with a nice drink and cake! 👍😉

Hi Charlie, most importantly is doing what you enjoy and are comfortable with at the time and recognising that can change too! The electronics trolley is a great idea (easier than a draw) and see it works for you. I always fit either Hollingsworth crimps or boot lace crimps to my wire ends, it only takes a stray strand on a stripped wire end being in the wrong place to cause problems if you can't see the connection clearly. Pushing a finished crimped pin in is easy to check its in OK. For cable protection look up spira band cable protection (benefit is can be retrofitted) or megamide sleeving (have to thread cables into as you wire). Yes am with you on sometimes losing your mojo (yep got the tee shirt too), there are times when having a break and coming back fresh to something you are better for it in many ways. Cheers Stephen

Hi Charlie I am sure that a lot of us will identify with you in our layout building. I finished my fiddle yard and two helices in the summer, added a raised floor using, of course, "railway sleepers" for the framework, carpet tiled the surface and stopped! Just couldn't move on to the next step of building the main upper layer - spent a lot of time modifying the trackwork with AnyRail but nothing being built. Finally bit the bullet a few weeks ago and ordered the timber. Last week I built the base board for the branch terminus and have laid the AnyRail 1:1 print of the trackwork on it and just today have been cutting the timber to start the support frames for the main layout boards so hey ho off we go again! Looking forward, as always, to your next video - all the best Peter.

Another entertaining video Charlie. You talk about butterfly modeling and go on to make a butterfly video, flitting from one subject to another. As a craftsman I was taught to do everything in a logical, methodical order. You do seem to go from track to landscape, wiring to maintenance and because of the way you work, we are still yet to see any trains running. Maybe thats what makes your video`s so fascinating and informative?

Charlie, Thank you again for a great video. The old 80:20 rule has another side to it. It only takes 20% of the time to get 80% done. The devil is in the detail of getting the last 20% done. It might not be butterfly, it might be: "What have I bitten off?. However, it is oftern good to take that break, and truely think through the process to get the last 20% done. I often "sleep on the problem", and get a much nicer solution that what I had first thought up. Keep us inspired, and mojo flowing. Cheers, and keep safe. Michael

Procrastination is the enemy of many a good project but it is also human nature. Particularly when you have invested time in something that you now realise is not the 'ideal solution' you thought it was. All power to your elbow Charlie for admitting to flitting around for "flit's" sake...! The biggest upside is that you (should) now have a better view of your planning...

Hi Charlie...... I've always tried to not be a 'butterfly' by sticking to the job in hand but there is always something that requires attention before the job in hand can progress. It just happens to be in the nature of model railroading, so hands up those who can say 'I'm no butterfly? Cheers Charlie and followers.

Hi Charlie, another fun & interesting video. I had never heard of the term "butterfly modeller" before, but it suites me also, like a lot of your other commenters. I have been working on those other projects for about 8 months when I had 1 big project I had to tackle - disassemble my 5 level oval helix (I had focused on potential end scenic aspects and overlooked the operational needs - ie. my "up" track was the inside track of the double track oval helix) - hmmm (other words where used at the time of realisation - 20 rods, 200+ nuts & washers, etc x 2.). Lucky for me I had seen one of your previous videos where you had purchased a SwiftNut nut-runner. I purchased a set myself and it made the job of disassemble and reassembly so much easier. Keep up the great work and thank you.

Nice to see you make some solid progress and bite some bullets! For all that we creatively avoid some things, when we do tackle them, it is almost always cathartic :-) To some extent I agree about the butterfly thing, but I think the flipside of that is that if you doggedly stick to one sub-project until it is complete, your overall progress will be slow cos you're always waiting for parts or for inspiration to solve some problem. Worse than that is that you treat each sub-project as a stand alone thing, without perhaps appreciating how it will affect (or perhaps even invalidate) other sub-projects. Your wiring board is perhaps a case in point! So I don't think either approach is always right for every stage of an overall endeavour. Keep up the great work, Charlie!

Great presentation as always. I think there is an element of the "Butterfly Modeller" in most of us. That said, I've been a chrysalis all Summer and as the nights draw in, will be returning to my N scale layout, with renewed vigour. Hi Charlie I completely echo your statement and views. I also agree that at times I might full into that category of a butterfly modeller my thought on it is that too much of a good thing does not work and at times if I leave a project or build and return at a later time I am more energised and motivated to complete or modifier and complete with more conviction. With regard to your wiring I am DC so under my control area it looks like spaghetti junction (that's even with trying to colour coordination points, signals and isolating sections) your wiring is inspirational and thanks as always for sharing, a pleasure to watch keep them coming. Please remember to stay safe..

Another informative and thought provoking video - with a moving loco in it too! I can see the benefits of the different methods outlined but at the end of the day it's about us enjoying what we're doing, so surely we should do what feels right for us? That said, there is usually a great deal of satisfaction in actually finishing something :) Perhaps the answer is to declare various parts of the layout (power districts, maybe?) as 'phases' with each phase going through planning; trackwork; wiring; testing; signalling, testing, scenics, etc in turn. That way, various parts of the layout can all be at different states without boredom setting in. Don't forget to run some trains too, just for fun! Thanks for sharing with us! Mike

Hi Charlie. Looking at the track diagram adding platform 3 makes an amazing amount of sense. Without it there would be no need for your tracks to bend in and out again with the curved platforms, the tracks would have been built straight considering the entrance and exit places. On a slightly different note, every time I watch people with all this DCC stuff I can't help but think that it is all pretty much redundant already. I think the future will be remote control, the technology already exists. The locos will have batteries in them which will be charged by putting them over charging points on your stabling point - so the locos will really go there for fuel! There will then be no need for any electrics to the main tracks at all. I guess the only thing it won't solve is your block detection, but for me it will be the way forward, once the layout is built and other things paid for - you know how it is... lol. Keep up the good work. :-)

Great update Charlie, if you make it short and tidy, then you can't move items, long and loose and it can get into a mess, look at any IT Patch panel, one thing we used to do was use elastic to pull the loose cable back so to avoid snagging

Thanks for an enjoyable video Charlie. Your standards are very high. My only comment is regarding the electrical safety of that transformer with bare terminals immediately adjacent to the 15v AC output terminals. I know you commented that it is easy to put on a piece of plastic card to protect it, but some users with children may not get around to doing that and with the possibility of ‘little fingers’ touching something I would prefer you to have used a safer shielded model, if only in your presentation. I can remember as a teenager ‘fixing’ a valve radio which wasn’t working and putting a screwdriver across the mains terminal to see if it had power. BANG. But, what do I know? You’re the producer. I am just a viewer. :-). Keep smiling mate. Keith

An excellent comment Keith. However, I have subsequently found out that the company do make a plastic shroud for these transformers. Sadly, it doesn’t come with it but has an extra charge!

Re the electronics board. Considering the old pithy Moltke statement, “no plan survives contact with the enemy”, perhaps a modelers version of it would be, "no plan survives contact with imagination". But this is what I find attractive about the hobby. Nothing is permanent - and the model is the better for it.
