Happy Birthday! Thank you so much for this review. I've coveted a Bachmann Pullman set for several years now but always held back because of the cost. It's an iconic model of an iconic train. Like you, what I remember is the reversed blue/grey livery of the Pullmans at Paddington - from family trips up from Stroud. I never got to ride in one either, but my cousin and I explored a withdrawn set at Old Oak Common on a depot visit once. I'm still in two minds as I prefer the Nanking Blue livery (and thought those had all sold out, but not if you look hard enough) but my layout has a Teesside theme. However, I'm even more in a quandary now as only two days ago I found a photo of a Blue Pullman set at West Hartlepool on 13 March 1965 with a special from Warwickshire for a Rugby Union County Championship Final match against County Durham. And then I found a photo of a Hastings Diesel (which twice came on excursions to Stroud in early/mid 1970s) at Middlesbrough for special services to Whitby in 1997. All proving, yet again, there's a prototype for everything.

Just seeing the joy on your face as the new train goes round the layout makes it worth the price you paid. Often we buy stuff on a whim and get it home and wonder why we bought it and it never sees the light of day. This is obviously not so it this case. Makes me wish I had one here in the states just to capture some of the joy it brings to you. Best of luck and keep on playing with trains 🚞

My first train set was the 1970's liveried Hornby version of the Western Pullman, which got broken on Christmas day and had to be taken back. I dare say that if I'd have been older, then it wouldn't have been a problem to fix it: no DCC fittings back then; but I was only 8 years old. Sibling rivalry. Unfortunately, the shop didn't have a replacement set so I went for a steam engine hauled set instead. I hope you have as much fun with it as I'd have liked to. Thank you for showing us round the Bachmann Western Pullman set. Stay Safe and Keep Well, sir. Cheers!

Charlie, What a fantastic set to have on the layout. I'm sure you could use the empty box as a door stop. Blue Pullman trains. When these units made their apperance on British Rail, they were addvertised as the " Future" of B/R. The attendants had their own airline crew uniforms and even Female crew members ( shocking I know). Part of the uniform was Captain Scarlet style caps. Blue Peter took us all for a ride on the train via the T.V. The magazine Look and Learn had a centre spread with diagrams and photo's of the trains. I pestered Mum and Dad to take me to London to see the train. So one Saturday over the School summer break mum, dad my 2 brothers and myself headed for the big smoke. With no modern communication we had to sit around St. Pancras nearly all day before the Pullman showed up. Amongst all the smoke from the steam loco's I can still smell the diesel fumes in the air. And feel the heat coming out of the big side vents just behind the cab. Looking back I think the rest of the family were bored out of their minds, but it's a day of magic to me. I wonder where that Bright British Rail Future went? Well I suggest you let the Western Pullman stretch it's legs one more time. That new Digitrax unit I can purchase online for $ 200.00 ( one hundred pounds) free shipping. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Charlie, you're right about the couplings. I took mine, and it's a Blue Pullman, off the layout to run it at the club. When I reassembled it the next day I was experiencing an intermittent short that i couldn't at first pin down. As my Blue Pullman and a couple 50 class diesels were they only items removed and put back I lifted the 50's off, still shorting, off comes the Pullman short gone. What I found was that one of the copper wipers in the coupler plug hadn't gone in square and and had crossed over into the next one and the resultant short. The damage was a melted coupler plug which I haven't got around to replacing yet.

Congratulations on your newly finished layout and your new passenger train acquisition! Wonderful! The cars light up - like amazingly. - It's easy to arm-chair quarterback... My ideal layout would be where the main line (loop) is fully automated .... as we discussed in a diff vid... with sensors knowing where the train is at all times...and the appropriate signals lit up and signalling away.... power supplied to the track sections only where the train is at the time... with even a couple of road railroad crossings automated as well.... all at night of course. - Do they make passenger trains with little lighted simulated billboards inside the cabs at the top, with flashing red/green lights? You know... the ones that annoy the passengers and sell them stuff.

It is quite a sharp-looking train and fits in wonderfully on your layout and with your other stock there. In German models we have somewhat similar connections on the various HSTs (The ICE3s and ICE4s by multiple companies, the Railjets by Roco and Jagerndorfer), and they do advise owners to not take them apart, except for maintenance. In fact, some companies make special wheel-cleaning track that add on to a layout so one doesn't have to take them apart even for that. I will say, the coupling/uncoupling mechanisms by Roco and Märklin are seemingly easier than the Bachmann shown, with a latching pin and slot on the bottom. Anyhow, enough rambling- great video and cheers!

Thanks for another great video, Charlie, and a very Happy Birthday (soon). It was 31-255DC (but no sound fitted I still use DC!) bought on 14/11/12 at £295! Amazing how much prices have risen. I too only travelled on the electric loco hauled Manchester Pullman, which was in the same coach livery as your version, & that was great. Boarded at Crewe in time for a "Full English" which was finished by Watford I think it only cost £10 c. 1985! Happy days :-) Just for the benefit of others my instructions did state the order in which coaches should be assembled as it was in effect 2 3 car units with a "dead" centre coupling. Happy Birthday Charlie, A great model on your layout. Bachmann / Liliput have been using this type of "wired" connectors for their DMUs & EMUs for a while. Totally agree that it is a bit fiddly but I think connector is better than some of the other EMU / DMU wired connectors from other manufacturers. Also by the way, I tend to add an directional arrow plus car sequence number on the underside of the couplers using a paint marker to help setup the motor cars & coaches if adding or removing them from a layout.

I had the IE800 5 car unit with similar couplings. I built a wooden L frame so I could take the train off the tracks without uncoupling. Just 2 long bits of wood joined together. Extensive storage sidings would do the job too but I don't have them.

When this came out in 2012 it was another level. Superlative model. I have it but would love to fit the Howes sound to it. I’m retired and blown loads of Money on models as you can’t take it with you. We are all custodians of stuff anyway and just need to look after it for the next person. Remember the old Blue pullman on the Midland main line blasting through our village just north of Leicester, in 1963/4 at 5.00 pm every weekday . Next to the Dirty/Drab looking steam and peak locos it certainly stood out. My brother had the Triang version at the time (only 3 Units as I remember it ) The real Blue Loco I believe was relocated to your region from the East Midlands and repainted. So for old times sake if I get one it would have to be the Blue one. Nice one Charlie.

Afternoon Charlie from sunny Fareham lol 😂 Fantastic way to pass the time of day before I set off for home a Charlie Bishop video 😄 I saw most of the Pullmans in the scrap line at OOC depot in the 70s and the shed foreman told us the rest were at Philips marsh junction on static coach heating so we jumped a train and got the rest of the numbers 👍🏻 I was too young to see them in action even thought they used to go out of Manchester central on my home line 🙁 Two weeks is too long but even you need a break sometimes lol 😂 Have a lovely weekend with your family and see ya very soon . Cheers as always for a fantastic video Stevie 😎

Hi Charlie, Certainly a beautiful model! The couplings are now becoming the standard from Bachmann on their EMU & DMU stock. I have similar couplings on my 4-TC & much more pinned (12 I think) version on my new 117. I did like the fact that the headlights were very muted as in real life, I guess they were incandescent bulbs. Also the cab lights looked very prototypical. Keep the great films coming!!

I remember seeing the blue one when I was little, 4 or 5 years old I think. I believe it was in Cardiff where we were waiting to come home on a different train. I remember it made an big impression on me and my father called it a Pullman. The only other train I had ever seen until then were the green Rhondda Valley trains with a yellow front and three windows. I've never been to London since and I never saw a Pullman, (either a blue or indeed this reverse livery) again, apart from the one printed on my Brooke Bond Tea card in the 'Transport' book which I still own, along with all the others I collected. I love the train you've bought, it is beautiful.

Its unique in that the box is bigger than the layout. I owned a dynamis once. Swapped it for a bag of doughnuts ...useless. The train itself is world class. I have the nanking blue version with sound in both cars and is truely phenomenal. Bachmans best model ever.

Hi Charlie, I don’t know how you could possibly expect to have drivers or passengers with this model when it’s less than a thousand pounds. Really, what were you thinking? It is very nice to see coaches lit up, and hear engine sounds, and, as with all model trains, if you like it you will want it. As long as you’re happy, and you won’t make your wife and children starve by buying it, then that’s all that matters. Regards, Jim

Thanks again Charlie for another enjoyable video. Because of the lights you definitely need a crew and to populate the seats in the train (good luck with that) but it is a wonderful model. However, I wouldn't pay anywhere near the asking price for one especially since you need a decent layout to run a full set. I prefer the original paint scheme of all blue to the grey with blue and yellow ends, but that is my own preference. I did ride in one once from Bath to Chippenham in about 1963 so it wasn't a long journey and I can't remember the ride quality. I had to pay the supplement but at least I didn't have to wait for the next train.
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын
You’re a lucky boy Don to ride one. The crew and passengers are the next investment!

Thb though not really, sound lights etc, fancy controller all included, much nicer mouldings than when you, or even spring chicken me at 33 were young, much more complex assembly, much more complex design work, much more researched design and variation in design, livery, so on. All of that before we get to the risks of committing to a production run with no solid guarentee on when you'll get the product to show and recoup your costs thanks to china still chasing no covid and shutting things down left right and centre in the process which messes up your whole supply chain and production before it even ships in a shipping enviroment of higher prices and less reliability. Quite amazing we have it at all more risk averse business people would have just pulled the pin and consolidated into more lucrative lines or changed to other products.

Hi Charlie, super video and a nice model! I have 2 Blue Pullmans in N, one I brought new and one I brought for my sidekicks other half when he passed away. It’s has sound at both ends and I always liked it. Anyway, I have two carrying cases with track in for when I want to take the complete train off the track. This means I don’t have to uncouple them all the time. I have one for my n Brighton Bell as well! Very useful. The case was made on a laser cutter out of plywood in sections then put together. The program is out there on the net somewhere and could be scaled up to OO, should you ever want to do the same. Thanks again, see you in a couple of weeks.

I have the non Dynamis Ultima, Blue Pullman Crested Front set and it is a very beautiful set, but I haven't run yet (a sable in deed, LOL). The main issue I had was that the power copper connectors between the stock can be easily bent. I found this out with my Bachmann 32-646Z Class 438 4-TC #8007 BR RTC (KERNOW) unit that use the same coupler. To prevent the copper wires bending again I added a droplet of super glue at the end of each four copper contacts were they curve up. Care is still needed to prevent them bending, but hopefully they will be more resilient with the added glue.
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын
But a little too Permanent for my liking
@TATICMOOR4 жыл бұрын
@@ChadwickModelRailway Yes, as you would have to disconnect and reconnect adding to the coupler wear and tear to failing completely. That is unless one makes a cassette affair to drive them onto and close the ends off and put away as a whole. I was wondering what you will do with the example track board when you are finished with it. I wish thinking if you did some scenic glass on it to finish would you sell it to me as a test area and photo'ing diorama to use until I get a layout up and running?

First of all, Happy 21st again' Another great, easy to watch video, thank Charlie, I did get one of the 'custard dip Pullmans as I missed out on the full blue ones and they are a beautiful model, I will repaint the cab end at some stage, yeah of course I will. Just one small thing, can you PLEASE reform your HST in the correct order, the TGS (44xxx) should be formed at the end of the train as there is no passenger access through the guards area, so your Standard oops I mean 2nd class passengers wouldnt be able to get to the Buffet at the moment. Anyway off down to the mancave as you have inspired me to get my Rolf in gear, thanks again Charlie.
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын
A great comment Mike. Regarding my HST, I think that you are actually wrong because I have the wrong coach. At this point in time the guard was still located within the power car. Regards Charlie

Happy birthday, young’un. Yes, I can see the Western colour scheme is very nice, and the blue with full yellow end (with the yellow forehead) is too much. But I do like the “white bandit “ effect of the original, with the crests. It compliments the 5BEL with its crests, and the ATP with its “black bandit” effect. (Yes, I’ve forgotten the Deltics)

Yeh I got a blue Pullman a couple of years ago and I agree those couplings are shocking.Ive damaged a couple of the connections so no lights in the coaches.my other gripe is how do you program both power cars,I can only program one but not the other so I can only enter 03 into my digitrax to be able to run it.
