Like many, I’d guess, I have been trying to fettle an ageing layout but the truth is the basics just weren’t good enough when I started. I have decided that it is time to start again. Boards can be reused but I have learned that squeezing more into a space is not a good idea. Seeing the quality on Chadwick (and some other great YT layouts that didn’t get my vote) has convinced me that starting fresh is the right move. Thanks for the inspiration!
@grahamthompson66222 жыл бұрын
I am sure yu are right and applaud your decision to start again. If I were younger (I am 84) I would do the same but no longer have the time. As Charlie points out, this still does not solve all the problems and I still have some stretches of track and pointwork that cause problems despite having no obvious signs of poor design or workmanship.

Great to see the layout actually running - a terrific achievement. At the end however you touch on issues of reliability and couplings. My layout is of similar complexity to Chadwick but is single track with a 70' long run (excluding the helix) but all compressed into a 10' x 5" scenic section plus a single 4'6" dia. helix board. Tight curves and a veritable switchback of gradients are the order of the day. It has taken me 18 months since the track and wiring was completed to reach a stage where 21 of my normally active 30 trains can be relied upon to run trouble free and pass the "leave and get a coffee" test. These are mostly hauled by early diesels with so far only 7 of my steam hauled trains passing the test. The remaining 9 less reliable trains are mainly steam hauled. I have already discarded as beyond redemption at least 9 steam locos (and countless coaches and wagons) but am persevering with the rest. Apparently random uncoupling remains a problem as of course does derailment. Strangely, a 9f 2-10-0, a 28xx 2-8-0 and a 30xx 2-8-0 are among the reliable units even hauling 8' long trains, while the small ex-Southern 0-4-4 tanks have had to be abandoned even with only an autocoach. It would be interesting to learn in some future Chadwick report how Charlie tacles this problem. My layout is perhaps extreme, but most subscribers must suffer from similar problems to some degree.

Your ability to laugh at yourself, to admit your mistakes and to explain where you went wrong and how you fixed it, and your infectious good humour and generosity of spirit mean you are a living demonstration that real humanity is still to be found on the internet despite so much depressing evidence to the contrary. Another great video Charlie. It's amazing how much progress you've made with the layout. I hope you'll find time in a future episode to show us more about train controller; how you set up routes or time tables and how it interacts with something that you are doing manually. One possible error in your routing crops up at about @17:59 when the freight train goes through Chadwick Parkway Station and takes the line next to the platform rather than using the "fast" line through the middle.
@ChadwickModelRailway2 жыл бұрын
You make an excellent point Lee, I was thinking that the freight train wood stop to allow the HST to pass straight through. Before I make the TrainController video I just need to become a little more knowledgable. Take care mate. Regards Charlie

@@ChadwickModelRailway Shouldn't Lee appear on one of your videos at some point? Given that he is the Architect of the layout in no small part. Excellent update. Fun to see things running as they ought to. Cameras are a vexation to all--and if not batteries, then other issues (I prefer batteries, they are simple). Every so often, I'll pop over to some of the G-Scale outdoor layout channels. I do my best to not remember what that lot costs, engines or rolling stock . . . Sadly, the days of a US$25 N-gauge loco have passed us all by. Just one more reminder that our hobby vocations are labors of love not econony.

Charlie, how awesome to see the fruits of your labors, it's obvious that you have been busy over the summer. Unfortunately I have not and my "round touit" list has if anything grown rather than diminished. I always like your honesty and admit that I have more than a few issues that mean I'm not where I want to be with things right now. I'm inspired by your progress, and have decided I need to re-think a couple of areas on the layout that are going to involve some tear down and re-do, but I'm sure it will be worth it in the end. e.g. my fiddle yard experiment has not worked, primarily because it's curved, resulting in way too many derailments on the way in and out (the 3 way points don't help either) I need to add to the "loft" and re-situate the fiddle yard to be more accessible and straight. Anyhow, onward and upward and as always enjoy your updates. BTW I saw the new KZbinr of year yesterday when voting and made what I thought was the most deserving (glad to see you listed) vote :)

I use a HAWK EYE, Fire Fly. Track camera to inspect the track with, to occasionally check the joints for kinking and condition in areas where the track is covered. I found the same problem as you have experienced with Kadees, so I use a section of track on a board (consisting of 3 set track 18 rad curves) which is used specifically for testing which Kadees I require for everything. Interestingly, you have decided to do the same as I decided about 3 months ago, I also no longer purchase Hornby or Bachmann made locomotives or rolling stock. The prices are unforgivingly extortionate. Again like yourself, I had to do a hell of a lot of work on my coaches with kinematic couplings to get them to run, pull, push and go up and down gradients. Specifically Pullman coaches. Thank you once again for a very well put together quality video. I didn't plan for block detection when I built my layout so unfortunately, automation is not really something I can use.

Great to see your automation working successfully now you can tail chase! Yet another key milestone. Always a pleasure to listen to what you have to say and update on experiences - there is a lack of comparability which all stems from a serious lack of standards and variation - it’s become a very “bitty” hobby which certainly takes a lot of time to navigate and make the right choices. Yes new prices currently going through the roof - so its simply time to spend on other things! Well done on the nomination, you have my vote and good luck. Best regards Stephen

Mr. Charlie, this is amazing. I’ve spent a lot of time watching your videos, both instructional oriented and just for fun as well. It’s been fun to see it all come together to where it is now in a matter of months (for me at least). I’m excited to see where this goes! Also, I voted for you!

Hi Charlie, I have several container wagons, all with Kadee couplers and you have to mix and match 17, 18 and even 19's depending upon buffer clearance. Even have a Dapol super low set that has a height adjusted Kadee. Interesting note, most of my models are actually Australian. I was running a loco and grain wagons one day, all going well, happily going around, left for a few minutes to to come back to silence. All were on the floor, requiring medical attention.

Great Update! Definitely worth all our votes folks! Now... some time ago you were updating your Digitrax handheld controller to the more modern version that I'm now using myself as I head toward Block detection & iTrain. Am I correct in assuming that, you've reverted back to using the older model & if so, though I've not used this one myself, wondered why? PS I've now cast my vote for you, you certainly deserve it 👍

Firstly, thanks for the vote, much appreciated. I haven’t reverted back to my original DT 400, it’s just that is where its pocket is screwed to the baseboard. The DT602 sits on another outlet. I have no real opinion which is better, but the new one does allow me access to more functions. Regards Charlie

Another gem of a video, Charlie, and thanks for your efforts. Regarding Kadees, my layout is an end to end, fiddle yard to station, so my freight stock has a number 18 at the western end and a 19 at the eastern. I found 18 at both ends was too close in some circumstances, while 19 at both ends was no improvement on hook and bar types. 18/19 is a reasonable compromise.

How do you say Peter, a great compromise. Stay safe mate, regards Charlie

Another very enjoyable video Charlie. Totally agree about the cost of diesel locos and stock in general these days. It's a shame really as sometimes the items you really want to add you your layout are totally unjustifiable, especially if you have a family and other priorities like food and electricity!. I occasionally buy hornby railroad models and add the missing details and weathering myself, which if done well can be very effective and also rather satisfying
