She acted cocky and mean towards everyone she faced and when she finally met one person who could defend against it (Holly Holm) she was destroyed. Her kicks and punching abilities are that of a white belt. Then she retired .......

@RyTrapp06 жыл бұрын
The problem with your argument, Chael, is that it applies EXACTLY to Jose Aldo - and, it's because their respective divisions never existed until they(and the other fighters) were brought in. In Ronda's instance, she was titled the initial champion because Strikeforce was absorbed and Ronda was the Strikeforce champion. In Aldo's case, he was titled the initial champion because WEC was absorbed and Aldo was the WEC champion. Ronda was the Strikeforce champion because she beat Strikeforce's then champion for the title - Miesha Tate. Aldo was the WEC champion because he beat WEC's then champion for the title - Mike Brown. Ronda retired without ever beating a standing UFC champion - but she beat a standing champion in Strikeforce. Aldo - let's be honest - is likely going to retire without beating a standing UFC champion. And most certainly will get inducted, as he deserves to(even if Conor stole his soul in the most savage fashion in all of combat sports history...).

I understand what Chael is saying, but, would that same rule apply to Jose Aldo??? WEC was absorbed, was the first and longest reigning UFC featherweight Champion, lost to Max Holloway twice, and if he was to retire now, he would’ve, technically, retired as a champion that has never beaten a champion. Would he be question in getting inducted into the Hall of Fame, just on those terms? I don’t think so. He should be inducted.

Difference is, there was no women's division in the UFC before Ronda. You have the Pride and Strikeforce absorption, but, the men's divisions were absorbed into already established divisions that had champions. Ronda was the champion and her division was absorbed into a company that didn't have any women's divisions. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to have her as the defacto champion to start.

The difference with women's bantamweight is that Zuffa bought and imported the whole division en masse -- the contenders and the champion all came in as a unit. They just changed the name of the title that she already held. It's the same way that Dominic Cruz got the men's bantamweight strap -- the BW division was imported in its entirely from WEC. Renaming the belt was just a formal recognition of the fact, not awarding of a vacant title.

The difference between those other examples Chael gives of Justin Gaithe and David Branch aren't the same because they had those divisions in the UFC. Plus, let's not diminish her accomplishments; she was undefeated for several years and won in mostly dominating fashion. Yeah, it was mostly arm bar central. But she is a judo practitioner and it was effective. There should be no debate, actually, about Ronda in the HOF.
@JamesBond-mm3iu6 жыл бұрын
I believe that hall of fames serve as a way to tell the story of a sport through its key players. Often times this debate comes up in the NFL hall of fame the argument used is can you tell the story of the NFL without this person. I believe when we tell the story of the ufc we have to have Ronda in there. She revolutionized how female mma was viewed. Was the first major female fighter that got not just men to support her but women too.

Meisha Tate was the Strikeforce world champion and that is a main world champion also when WEC was taken into the UFC Dominick Cruz at 135 lbs and Jose Aldo at 145 lbs became the UFC champions at their perspective weight classes because there was no champion or weight class in the UFC. Benson Henderson who was the 155 lbs champion of the WEC but had to fight his way to the UFC 155 lbs championship because there was already a champ their named Frankie Edgar. The UFC did to Rousey what they did to Cruz and Aldo (Gave them the world championship belt). I didn't hear people complaining about Cruz and Aldo being given their UFC championship belt! All anyone has to do is look at their wikipedia page and see the transition of defending the belt at WEC to the next fight defending the belt at UFC... very clear! It is a shame that these guys haven't done their homework and only rely on memory to make their comments.

both Dominic Cruz and Jose Aldo came into the UFC as champions when the UFC announced the featherweight and bantamweight divisions respectively.
@JimboRd16 жыл бұрын
Chael either forgot or failed to mention that Jose Aldo was awarded the UFC featherweight belt without ever competing in the UFC too. He was the WEC champ and promoted to UFC champ and his first fight was a title defense. Dominick Cruz was awarded the UFC bantamweight belt without competing in the UFC also. His first fight was a title defense. Same as Rousey. Not sure why it bothers people that Rousey got that treatment but don't care about Aldo or Cruz doing the exact same thing. By the way, it made sense in all 3 cases. The UFC absorbed a division that didn't even exist up to that point and kept the champions.
@mikesantini656 жыл бұрын
It's really not confusing the UFC did not have a division they bought one and used it the strikeforce 135 lb division was not made it already existed just like how the Colts moved to Indianapolis it did not mean all the stats and stuff were invalid or did not count I think the women in strikeforce were world champions if they got that belt unless you know of a organization with better fighters at that time. So basicly UFC took the strikeforce women's bantamweight division and renamed it it was exactly the same from fighters to rankings I mean Ronda probs would had still fought Liz carmouch either way what's confusing chael?

I get what youre saying Chael, but ya cant have it both ways. The decision to make Rhonda the champion because she was marketable. At the time, the UFC wanted to make a splash by kickstarting women's MMA with a marketable woman. She had the look, she already proved herself in Strikeforce as a dominant force, so why wouldnt they just continue that path of her being a champion when the UFC absorbed Strikeforce? Plus, it helps the UFC show that their new fighters that came over from Strikforce was just as talented as the UFC fighters thus strengthening thier roster and brand in the fan's eyes who didnt watch Strikeforce events. Making the best out of that specific situation to legitamize women's MMA, garner views and maximize profit.

This is a weird video-- I am not sure what he is saying. He seems to be saying that Rousey's induction is suspect because she never beat a UFC champion, but part of the reason for this was that she was the first UFC women's champion. She does have victories over Julia Budd (current Bellator Featherweight champion), Miesha Tate (former UFC and Strikeforce Bantamweight champion), and Sara Kaufmann (former Invicta Bantamweight champion), and still has the most title defenses of any female fighter in UFC history.

Different from all those guys that were champions somewhere else that you mentioned. Rhonda was the champion of a division that didn't exist in the UFC, and a that division was mostly built with fighters from that organization.

Ronda earned her place in the Hall of Fame but not as the greatest of all time for women's MMA. Her situation is different versus every other former champion of a previous promotion because their division already existed in the UFC. Without a women's division in UFC, anointing Ronda made sense and she proved her worth by holding on to it. I don't love the PTSD she's experiencing beyond the octagon but to say that she steamrolled everyone because they weren't good Fighters would throw away all that Miesha Tate, Cat Zingano, and others were worth. She promoted women's MMA and served as a good role model before she let the cracks show and thus gets a place in the Hall of Fame as a dominant champion until her reign (first reign for UFC women) ended. That's no debate. The conversation of greatest of all time, however, is for someone who truly embodies the term " mixed martial artist", a credit I cannot give to someone with only one or two dimensions.

I will disagree with Chaels point here for one reason. There was no female divison in the Ufc at the time, for example justin, david branch etc where champions in their prior organizations, when they came to the ufc they competed on the higher level in a division that was already formed. In Rondas case when they absorbed strikeforce the division was non existent. So I can let it slide as there was no division for the women to compete in, so it made sense to just promote Ronda as the batamweight champ since she was the strikeforce champion. They essentially just promoted strikeforces 135lbs division into a ufc division.

Jose Aldo and Dominick Cruz were both brought over as inaugural champs for new divisions when the WEC was merged with the UFC. It's wasn't unheard of when it happened with Ronda. She was champion before Strikeforce folded and was coming into a new division for the UFC, so she was giving the belt in a ceremony before the event, just like Dominick Cruz and Jose Aldo, two of the best fighters in MMA history. I'm not a diehard Ronda fan, at all. I dislike her quite a bit, but Chael was wrong about that. It wasn't unheard of and it wasn't the first time. Two other tremendous champions had the same start to their UFC careers. It was a new division for the UFC, that's why they were made champion before even fighting in the UFC. Existing UFC champions take precedence over incoming champions from other organizations, though.

Same with Aldo? Don't think anyone questions his tenure or the idea that he might get into the hall of fame. There was no UFC featherweight division so when they bought WEC he just came over as the UFC featherweight champion?

I get what the Bad Guy is saying about the David branches not joining the ufc as a carry over champion. But the ufc didn't have a woman's (bantamweight) division at the time. So would i think it makes to have kept Ronda as the champion.
@michaelh35836 жыл бұрын
Looking back at her opponents, Most of them were undeserving of a shot at the title but were thrown to Ronda because they had no one else for her. There was no depth in the division at the time so that means pretty much anyone who strung a fight or two win streak together got a shot lol. And then they put her in a match with someone with actual talent, Holm, and she got knocked the fuck out. She was a product of the system, Pure and simple.
@theqcgamer6 жыл бұрын
wasn't at the time that ufc bought strikeforce ... so pretty much the same girls fighting each other in another organisation therefore it makes sense to keep Ronda as a champion in the ufc

By Chael’s logic, Jose Aldo is questionable for the HOF since he never beat a defending champion for the belt. He came from WEC and was gifted the UFC Featherweight belt at a press conference. However, he does have two wins over Frankie, a former 155 champ.

Chael, 5/30 = 0.166666667 And also Aldo was "proclaimed" champion after the WEC merge. Cruz however fought for the WEC AND UFC belts at WEC 53.

Dana White took over Strike force and the title, he then had the champ move her title to the UFC to start this new division. That would have been Meisha Tate but she just finish losing her title to guest who Ronda Rousey. Ronda before joining her new boss defended her new strike force title against Sarah Kaufman who was a strike force champion. Interesting fact that Ronda told Dana White that she want to fight for the new UFC title but her new boss said no. The rest we already know, yes she deserves to be in HOF if for nothing else than taking the first step for the new women's division. We didn't see any other women step up.

Pride champions, David Branch and Justin Gaethje all came into a division where there was already a UFC champion. Jose Aldo, like Ronda, came to the UFC into a division where there was not already a champion, hence why they were simply given the strap.

But when Strikeforce and WEC we’re absorbed all the DIVISIONS that the UFC DIDNT HAVE got promoted to champions! Jose Aldo and Dominic Cruz included. So it does work that way.

So I get where both Ariel and Chael are coming from. I think when the UFC absorbed Strikeforce and as a result brought their fighters and women’s MMA for the forefront promotion they should have made Ronda’s fight vs Carmouche for the INAUGURAL women’s bantamweight title. I know yes when the UFC absorbed the WEC guys like Dominick Cruz and I think Aldo kept their title and their very next fight in the UFC was a labeled and marketed as a title defense. I think that in the case of the women’s MMA to satisfy Chael’s argument they should have just made the Rousey vs Carmouche fight for the inaugural title. Where I differ from Chael is when he refers to Branch and Gathje. Yes they were champions in different promotions and when they came for the UFC that title didn’t matter but only because they signed as free agents and weren’t signed because their previous promotion was absorbed into the UFC. What is also important to realize is that Branch and Justin were coming into a promotion (the UFC) where their weight classes were already established with a champion and a ranking system. When women’s MMA came to the UFC there was no weight classes for women, no rankings and no champion. So in the case of Ronda I understand why they promoted her to the champion and made her fight against Carmouche as a title defense rather than for the inaugural belt. Also when Chael says she never defeated a reigning world champion that’s not correct either. If I’m not mistaken when she fought Tate the first time it was for the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight title. And while people may scoff at that and not count it and Chael may as well, a Strikeforce champions accolades are still recognized even by the UFC when they are introduced during their fights. So my point is that I agree with both Chael and Ariel but I just happen to disagree with a few of Chael’s points. Hell I think even Chael should be in the UFC hall of fame for his first fight with Anderson Silva

She was the first female superstar of the brand. The first female Brock Lesnar if you will. But she beat a lot of girls as champ who, to be frank, were not all that much competition aside from Meisha. And of course everyone loved the idea of the first ultra popular ufc woman as well. It was the early days and she capitalized but as soon as she got another real fighter, she got head kicked onto Ellen.

Easily, she was the most-dominant champion ever. If you wanna characterize Tyson by his loss to Douglas, then go ahead. It tells only a part of the story. You can only measure an athlete by how they stand against their peers. And for a time, albeit only a few years, she was bowling her opposition over with ease. And in a sport where shelf-lives can vary, a 2-3 year championship run where you're winning a string of fights in mere seconds easily qualifies for HOF honors.

I think it's good to wait many years before inducting people, that way you only get inductees that truly pass the test of time. Otherwise you'd be doing things like inducting Kimbo, a flash in the pan who got enormous for some bizarre reason but who's career doesn't reasonably justify being a part of it. If after 20 years out of the business, everyone still remembers your greatest achievements, you deserve it. But this sport moves faaaaast and the stars often fall even faster. Look at Pettis, he was the next big thing and now his weight class has surpassed him. (For the record I still believe in Pettis but he's a good example to show how unpredictable fighting is)

If there were no existing women in the division I don’t think you have any other option than to respect the strike force ranking. Everyone’s records carry over from other professional organizations women or men, current or past and the fact that she had a fan following I think it was a no brainer for the UFC to label her champ.when you enter a complete new wrestling tournament your are given a seed based on past performance. I think either way it was her who brought most of the attention to women’s UFC so she should be a part of the hall of fame regardless.

She defended her belt six times that's Hall of Fame worthy but she did not sell the perseverance of a champion in the feet and she did not rematch any of her losses like Ali Tyson and Holyfield

They brought in several females because there was no Women in the UFC when she came into the UFC. How do they determine the UFC champion? You give it to the person who's company you buy out who is already the champion since the other girls from there are also coming into the UFC. Ronda held the title for 1074 days defending it against all top ranked fighters in her division. Yes she deserves Hall Of Fame status. Jackie Robinson does not have great HOF numbers but it is how he changed things that got him in. Ronda changed the way people look at female fighters. Joe Nameth terrible numbers for being in HOF but he changed the way QB's play by being a passer first. Sometimes it is the intrigue & money they bring to the sport. Ken Shamrock has 14 UFC fights with only 8 being wins. He is in the HOF because he was part of being a Pioneer for men in the MMA world like Ronda was for women. As a matter of fact 15 of 17 Shamrocks losses came in first round. His MMA record 28-17 not what I would call a great record but because of his being a pioneer. Satchell Paige got into the baseball hall of fame having a losing record. 28-31 but it was part of a impact of his importance to black baseball players. Get a clue you numbnuts.

If there was a "UFC Trash Talking Hall Of Fame" Chael Sonnen would definitely be the first to be inducted into it.
