I started training and now competing in amateur boxing at 36. I love it. I lost 90 pounds doing it and have kept it off. I am now 38 and 25 matches in. I plan on competing amateur until 40 then try a pro fight or two. Now I mostly compete in the Master’s division 35+ but will match up with anyone 30 up.

well, sure you can compete in Amateur boxing, but when you're above 35, you're already out of your prime, and you definitely can't compete in professional boxing which consists of 12 rounds and you are more likely to face those who are younger, and faster than you.

Im 36 and can still run, lift and spar the same as my late 20's. Now i do have some lower back problems that could be fixed with surgery from the weightlifting I i did when I was younger. But late 30's and very early 40's really aren't that old these days if you take care of yourself. Recovery time though slows as you get older and you have to adjust for that.

If "older" guys can stay healthy (no easy feat) they can be as fast, explosive and strong as they were at 30. What suffers are 2 things: 1. Reaction time (it starts falling off in your twenties, and repeated brain trauma is not helping this in any way) 2. Endurance starts suffering not due to being older in itself but from having to take it easier in training to avoid injuries that a) now happen easier and b)take longer to heal On top of all that, in MMA (or other combat sports) even if you are very good at avoiding punches by the time you're 40 you will have accumulated enough punches to the head that it takes the toll.

I'm in my late 40s and have never participated in athletics other than just doing modest workouts in the gym (nothing too heavy). I want to start training in muay thai or mma but my sedentary career kind of gets in the way - gotta pay the bills. Weekends and night training after 7 would be ideal but hard to find a gym with that schedule. I'm not in bad shape but not great shape either. Plus sometimes my knees bother me if I'm not careful. I hope fight training won't break me if I decide to do it. I wish I had tried this twenty years ago.

I am 60 and would still fight under a few conditions.NO weight cutting,i want a LEGIT fight partner.NO peds of ANY kind,again i want a legit fight partner.The final condition...,i need a few months to get back some cardio lol.My job is very hard work so i had to stop playing sports and stop the cardio workouts,just no way i was too tired and body needs rest.IF i had a job that allowed me to continue all these years,i have no doubt even at 60 my cardio and ability would be on par with anyone.My point is that 40 is NOT old,it is only old if you do things to slow yourself down,like gain weight,no cardio work ,laziness whatever. The age factor has more to do with weight cutting.Cutting weight is extremely tasking on an older person and their kidneys.If this sport removes the weight cutting aspect i bet more fighters would last into their 40's.The other factor is injuries,over time injuries will slow you down,bad joints,torn muscles,arthritis,cartilage and just the down time while recovering. "FABER"imo he was most certainly using ped's,i could see the very fast size transformations and it just looked too obvious.Cotoure is another one i have always suspected of a ped user,so these fighters were imo NEVER that good if not for peds.

I could not go for more than 2 minutes. Now I have had some other personal issues and cardio is something I could work on but I don't think the avg person understands how difficult the cardio side of fighting is. basically everyone ages differently. Some people develop very quickly and then plateau. some can take into their late twenties or even thirties before peaking then its just a matter of maintaining. If you look after yourself your forties shouldn't be impossible. Look at bodybuilders now, some of those dudes are almost fifty at the top level. granted they use steroids but to be able to last like dexter jackson is a good testament. I think human genetics have been misunderstood with respect to longevity. with modern health science i wouldn't be surprised if we see a lot more pros in their forties

There is a tv show called “Brain Games” in which psychological tests are performed. One test they flashed an item directly in front and another item to the side. It was a brief flash and you the viewer had to name item. I am 44 years old and didn’t pick them up. It was determined by the psychologists that you brain changes at 40 and to have seen the items you would be under that age ( there is exceptions but they prove the rule not change it). This explains why fighters start getting hit with shots they normally slipped. Their brain is not picking it up like it use to and the shot you don’t see is the one that knocks up out.

The reason athletes are able to go well beyond what people perceive them to be able to go in sports. is training and nutrition nowadays is so much more advanced than it was even 20 years ago. I mean it's really insane when you think about it.I mean looking football athletes are training better and eating better than athletes did in the 90s and in the 80s and before that. And they're able to go longer.also we have a lot more safety protocols to protect players or fighters so they can have longer careers. I'll say this is 100% honesty most fighters and athletes weather its football, basketball,boxing,MMA whatever most of them don't retire because they have to they retire because they can.it's a choice they choose to retire because normally they have so much money that they don't have to beat their bodies up any longer. I mean just look at the world strong man you got Mark Felix at like 54 years of age competing against dudes half his age and he still Killin It.

Regarding Uriah Faber's weight: Back in his wrestling days, not unlike my own wrestling and boxing days, he probably wrestled at, or close to, his actual 'in shape' weight. These days, for many UFC fighters their actual 'walk around' (in relatively fit condition) can be 20 to 30 lbs over their 'dehydrate the hell out of yourself' weigh-in weight. ~ I mean C'mon, I've heard that Khabib walks around at 185, and fights at 155. And some people, physiologically speaking, are better than others at dehydrating and quickly rehydrating. IMO there should be weigh-ins, or secondary weight check right before the fight. What's crazy to me is to look back and see how guys like Archie Moore and those old time boxers were fighting until they were damn near 50. No fucks were given lol
@Kaledrone
@Kaledrone 2 жыл бұрын
Look at Archie's second fight with Yvon Durelle, Archie was 45 and Yvon was 27, Archie took a beating in the beginning but kept coming back over and over again until he managed to turn the tides and then beat the shit out of Yvon. Another example of a boxer fighting into old age is Jem Mace, man fought professionally into his 60's and then kept doing exhibitions until his death, last recorded entry in the ring being at age 78

It all depends how long you've been doing it, how your body has held up, how you've looked after yourself, any injuries that have held up or not, so many things that the number of years isn't quite at the top of the list, it's all down to the individual.

@Ocasio-Cortez4prez2022 Yeah and when you think about it too it's not even that old. Chael says it best here about how athletes are getting older and Alan Jouban also said it recently on a UFC Now episode, I mean the average roster is early to mid 30's and all our title holders are in their 30's except Max, is Stipe around 37? It's just us that make it out to be and put that on it which is proven time and time again like with your example there once again showcasing this. I know MMA is different to wrestling in regards to wrestling being a scripted entertainment show but look at loads of them too, Ric Flair, Undertaker, Hogan, DDP, I could list literally hundreds but majority of them are in their 40's at least and people like The Miz and Dolph Ziggler now are about 40 and they're in their prime, my point is fake or not it's a physically demanding thing that requires this and they do get bashed about and put their bodies through hell performing almost every day throughout the year as well as of course training too so you're absolutely right. It's individual and how the person has looked after themselves, some athletes are done in their mid to late 20's when not taking care of themselves yet others are going way beyond that so it's a huge misconception that probably needs to change.

I thank it depends on the sport as well . Certain sports I believe will diffidently improve the average rate of retirement and also the average age of when you peak at your athletic performance . But fighting sports ? Ehhh . U can eat healthy and do whatever but the fact of the matter is the DAMAGE you take can’t always be reversed the human body can only take so much .

Why they should allow trt under strict limits and testing so older guys don't cheat. Look at Vitor Belfort.Look at Mike Tyson. Stem cells for injuries and 15 years out of boxing, went in the ring and lasted. He and Roy wanted to go all out balls to the wall, moving hard and fast to KO. You put him on trt, Tyson would be in his 2nd Prime......look at Shawn Rhoden winning Mr Olympia at 43. Dexter Jackson coming 2nd at 46. Albert Beckles winning pro bodybuilding show at 61...and yes Bodybuilding has some pretty damaging injuries too....
