Nailed it Chael, fight IQ is having the ability to adjust your gameplan mid fight, wether that's because something you're doing isn't working and you need to make an adjustment or wether you're someone like prime Anderson or Izzy who just needs to gather enough information, get reads and then go in. The Demetrius analogy was perfect for me as well, he's a guy who would force people to exercise their fight IQ, he's usually so far ahead, or just so comfortable and skilled wherever the fight goes it's up to the opponent

Fight IQ is the ability to see things in the fight and make adjustments mid fight, also setting traps and reading the opponent. I disagree with chael very much. I think some of the people who have the highest fight IQ in the game are: Conor McGregor, Demetrius Johnson, Rayan Hall, Jeorge Masvidal, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva... These are some of the fighters who either are great at seeing what the opponent does and finding a way to win, or are great at setting traps and being one move ahead, or they know how to change their approach and style of fighting depending on things that happened in the fight. They all have different kinds of IQ

I would surmise fight IQ in MMA into a symphony of 3 categories... Strategy: to prepare a solid game plan based on opponent's weakness/tendencies while understanding own strengths/limitations and a fighter's ability to impose will during the fight Awareness: To maintain octagon control and position, anticipate their opponent's reaction, realize time on the clock and objectively understand their own performance (well or poor) as rounds continue. Improvisation: the fighter's ability to adapt, counter, transition, switch and execute. ...Basically doing the smart shit you need to do to win positions, win exchanges, win rounds or win the fight!

Hey Chael huge fan. Because fighting is very complex and has many things to it I would treat fighting no differently than any other science or engineering which is why I think Kenny and Dominic developed such good minds for the sport. For example coming from a computational background you can split computers up into three different broad understandings. Computer science (high level theories relating to problems that computers can solve), computer engineering (selecting the most useful theory’s and defining a framework that focuses these theories into ideas that makes them applicable to solve real life problems), and the mathematics behind both fields that prove and help us understand how they work. Treat fighting no different than this or any other stem field, fight science (ex the way the body moves, weight distribution, balance, coordination which is the reason why for example boxers or known for moving very beautifully), fight engineering (a framework using these theories to make them applicable to fighting, ex game planning, fight strategy), and the mathematics behind these two fields proving how they all work to give us a solid understanding of what they are. I think the reason why the two guys you mentioned are so smart at fighting is because they’re the ones that understand these three fields the most. There solid understanding of this allows them to be able to brake down any situation better than the others in there field. Hit me up at dustinlandry1150@gmail.com if you think this is an interesting way to think about the sport and if you’d like to talk more about this. But that’s the reason why I think those guys are so smart, not just because of excessive horsepower although they probably possess that too, but the ability to treat the sport for what it is, no different than any other science or engineering!

The Fight IQ for me is the ability of a fighter to react to the opponent's actions and read their movements while being able to adapt at the moment. Your state of concentration or your ability to focus amidst the stress of combat is what determines first your ability to achieve a great Fight IQ, then your reflexes and visual-motor coordination. The last piece is technical knowledge. Intelligence, in general, can be considered as the ability to access knowledge (information) and use it in a practical way. The Fight IQ is based on exactly that but in a hostile environment for a concentration exercise where your mind must coordinate with your body.

Fight IQ to me means being able to determine what your opponent is trying to setup, recognizing their gameplan, and adjusting to shut them down and work your strengths instead. People have been using the term fight iq for way longer than a year and a half. Back when I was a regular on sherdog TEN years ago people were talking about it. Good Fight IQ can be summed up very simply by looking at the opposite: look at people that don’t stick to the gameplan or stick to it too much when it’s clearly failing, people who just can’t see what seems obvious to other people ie “why won’t he just do X? Or Y?” Some fighters seem to spot those things and exploit them, and some people adjust mid-fight very well. That’s fight IQ. Being able to adjust and strategize mid-fight
@kstylerz4 жыл бұрын
Being one or several steps ahead all the type and Make the right adjustments if necesarry, by yourself. So before a round ends. The adjustments after that, most often come from the coaches. When I used to fight I looked at it as a game of chess. Feeling your opponents out. Lots of fighters are predictable. So you can use that to lure them in knowing just what's coming especially if your reactions are quick. I remember one fight where my opponent had a thing for round house kick to the head. Knowing this and after blocking one I just knew the second would be on its way so I immediately went for the swipe on his leg and he hit the floor instantly. Then it was the case of finishing him off, which I did. But he was all about that power kick and the look on his face when he ended up from the ground. Priceless. Lol 😂

It seems like fight IQ has been used to define the understaning of MMA in general. Like listening to Cruz fight you can tell he has a great understanding of the sport. BUT IQ isn't just understanding, it's application(execution), responsive, and adaptable. No matter what game plan you have or your opponent you can change it in a seconds notice and execute a new one. But this doesn't apply to just plans, but techniques and specific moves as well. knowing when to use them to make the fight more efficient and go your way.

I believe fight iq is simply iq, that applies to fighting. It's the ability to analyze, breakdown and adapt at the fly, during a fight. Even if someone has high iq(not fight iq), he may not be able to do that in the ring, under pressure, or without enough combat experience. On the part of gameplan tho, it's hard to say 100% in this case, but IMHO it means someone may have high fight iq, if he can come up with good strategies and gameplans, but his fight iq won't be truly tested, unless he's forced into the ring to make these adjustments in there, without time to prepare.

Low fight IQ: the fighter sits on his stool after a round in which he got spanked, hears good and clear advice, and ignores it. Moderate fight IQ: the fighter understands the good advice and why it's good, and follows it. High fight IQ: the fighter didn't need to wait for a break because he made a wise adjustment on the fly as soon as the opponent started to do the thing that was beating him. Randy Couture fight IQ: the fighter adjusts to remove opportunities for the opponent and exploit opportunities for himself before the opponent even knows that the opportunity was there. But it doesn't help if your toolkit doesn't include the tools needed to do the job. If Brock Lesnar is too big and strong for you, or if Lyoto Machida is too fast, seeing it all coming does not help.

Mayweather comes to mind when comes to boxing IQ. And I’d say that IQ is similar but not the same as good gameplanning. Cause when the gameplan gets a wrench thrown in it can the guy adapt and recalibrate if yes then it’s probably because they have eiether a good IQ or a good corner. Also I think guys who know how to read there opponents tend to be better at this. Some guys just think I only have to do my fight and can’t adapt when it doesn’t work (think Diego Sanchez as some have mentioned). Hi IQ guys are pretty rare. I think Izzy has a good IQ, as well as Jones, and Conor. DC is a good analyst out of the fight but within the fight he doesn’t adjust super well and doesn’t change the gameplan when it starts to fail.

I always was iffy on p4p rankings though because fighters physical attributes determine alot on their technique like if Jon whent to DJ's size he'd probably move alot better be way faster and have better cardio so his style would be entirely different same vice versa
