This is what Chael was trying to explain. You put it perfectly man. I think most people (me included) thought that wrestling was pretty much combined with grappling as well. I didn't separate the two, but in reality to me its all the same thing. if your'e a grappler you have to try and learn it all(takedowns, sprawl, TDD, submission, submission defense).

Bad wrestling is only enough if you have good striking. If you have acceptable striking and great BJJ, you can do as good as your level of striking because no one will take it to the ground. If you have great offensive wrestling and very good GNP or BJJ, it's enough to win a championship even if the striking is mediocre or average. Great offensive wrestling (I think Chael qualifies here) is enough to give a big force multiplier to the striking. If you recall in the Anderson fight, Chael rocked him several times on the feet because of the fear of the wrestling. For great (MMA) wrestling to be world beating, I think you need to have either good to great GNP, submission game or striking. e.g. Jon Jones, Khabib, GSP, Chael, Lesnar, Cain, DC, Couture. For great wrestling to be great MMA wrestling, the skillset has to transfer. Conor did really good I thought in the Khabib fight. Somewhat better defenses to what Khabib was doing was in order though. Whether it was better defensive wrestling on the feet, some calf or leg kicks to slow down his push to the cage (like Gaethje has), defense against the leg entanglements, or getting to his feet better, it needs to be one of those things. Alternatively it's a numbers game and maybe 1/3 or even 2/3 Conor wins it, but didn't get the knockout punch in the match they fought.

I've noticed that as well. I'm not a fighter but just from watching a lot of MMA, I've seen that a lot of the time, if you're not a wrestler, knowing a few key things seems to be enough to get a fighter out of trouble. Speaking of Conor, Chad Mendez couldn't keep him on the ground. I'm not saying Khabib is Chad, but it showed that even if his forte isn't on the ground, he knows enough to get out of trouble AND he's got some good tricks to keeping the fight from getting to the ground in the first place.

Chad took him down 4 times though and Khabib is better. This is an excellent video. The same could be said about grappling, though. You don't need top grappling/BJJ on the bottom if you are strong enough and are good at scrambles / getting back up / sub defense. There are countless examples of fighters who get away with minimal grappling because they know how to negate grappling. Maybe striking is different? In any case, where does Kevin Lee fit into all of this?

Ask Ngannou and Till how important wrestling is
@gamersinger51186 жыл бұрын
Яспер Ван Лоо Technically that wasn't wrestling. In Ngannou's case it was taking him down and draining his energy while keeping busy with strikes. In Till's case it was a knockdown from a punch and that was poor submission defense than anything though I suppose that one could be argued.
@timhall30116 жыл бұрын
Good point CHael. I think fans too often mistake wrestling for grappling. Khabib knows the difference, that's why he told Conor at the press conference "you don't have wrestling AND you don't have grappling". Wrestling is only 1/10th of the problem, it's the stuff that Khabib does to you on the ground (grappling) that really kills you.
@michaelmaloskyjr6 жыл бұрын
I think the key element Chael left out is this: high level wrestling(NCAA Div 1 All-American/World Freestyle) is predicated on a uniquely intense workout regimen. There's a truism among wrestlers that the only way to get in shape for wrestling is to wrestle. This kind of background makes MMA workouts a snap. The weight cutting, the constant push/pull grind against opponents in the sweatiest circumstances is just bread 'n butter for grapplers. Every old skool wrestler knows the infamous Iowa Hawkeye summer camp black t-shirts and its hellish daily schedule printed on the back!

It is something people don't understand until you feel it from someone that is Better in a Scramble. You obviously know this.

Well I guess bad wrestling is a lot worse than you thought, Chael. Connor got owned on the mat. He couldn't stop the takedown and had no submission attempts. Didn't even try to get up for most of the fight. Nice to see an epic fail from Mr Knowitall, Chael.
@klefusmcdonald26446 жыл бұрын
IMHO, The shot that Connor could potentially land on Khabib and knock him out is a close quarters hook while Khabib shoots for a single catching him behind the ear a la Dustin Porier, or when Khabib goes for an under hook, Connor could roll somehow followed by an inside left cross, Khabib seems to particularly go for an underhook of his opponent right arm. Connor is in an elite level of fighters that can generate such power from close quarters. If Khabib can avoid these particular shots, he just might get a shot at implementing his variation of take down, hold down, ground and pound.

was watching for much the same reasons as everyone else; However, I was looking for how much if any of Macgregor's jaw has been affected by the punishment he took from Mayweather over 10 rounds. Don't forget a pro boxer's punches are fast, hard and much heavier than most MMA fighters. Also, he took heavy damage at the hands of Nate Diaz in 2 fights, and Nate carries proper boxing trained punches as well. I also have to not here that if a fighter's jaw goes kaput, often so does his punch if he is a knockout artist. When Pipino Cuevas ran into Thomas Hearns he was demolishing everyone and had an Iron jaw. He lost both his Jaw and punch after Hearns and had to soon retire. Roberto Duran ran into Hearns and got starched, but he went on to beat Iran Barklay and Davey Moore and had an illustrious career and so forth. Most lose a little bit of jaw and punch here and there throughout their career by aging and punishment or both.I noted Mcgregor's reactions seemed very compromised and slow from the outset. After round one it seemed he didn't even bother ducking a lot of power shots, and I noted the jabs were hurting Mcgregor badly Both indicators of concussive damage, boxer's brain. He hit Kabib a few times with the vaunted left and Kabib was literally unfazed. Another indicator of Mac's being somewhat punch-drunk possibly or at least damaged.The first round was text-book Kabib, but pretty much had to be. He is a notoriously slow starter, and Macgregor could end it then and there. The fact he did so well in round one was bad, bad news for Mac. Kabib did so well moving to his left and away from Macgregor's power which kept falling short. That bothered Macgregor, he thought of Kabib's sound strategy of movement and away from his power. In that instant Kabib shot a takedown knowing full well Mac had prepared a knee for it. Macgregor's preoccupation, which Kabib knew was going on set Mac up for the takedown. For Kabib that was a warm-up round. Macgregor incidentally was bone dry and hadn't warmed up properly himself.Kabib was so much faster than Macgregor who is himself noted for his speed. That was evident by a lead right knockdown. In fighting 98 percent of the time you lead with a jab and almost never throw a lead right hand which is easily countered. Aldo tried that and got dummied. A lead right is also what Ali used to set up Foreman for an upset. So it can have its place but very exceptionally. In MMA lead with a jab, or at least a Teep kick. Best option is move away from your opponent's power. Agreed to most a two point round for Kabib which would have a profound effect on and influence Mac's eventual tapout. It's tough having 3 rounds to go, being out of gas, and being down 3-0, and staring a full tank loco-motive in the eyes with bad intentions in his eyes not to mention hate. Macgregor comes away from round 2 beaten up, out of gas, and Kabib is now 60 percent warmed up; more on that in a bit. I believe at this point Kabib has it in the bag and he knows it.Round 3. Macgregor will now look for Kabib to slow down which does happen but not for what Mac thinks. It is a voluntary round off for Kabib. I believe at this point Kabib is looking for ways to safely beat on Macgregor without letting him back into the fight. I also believe that Kabib thinks he is off on his own perceptions of not having warmed up properly, and expending so much gas, so in a sense he is out of kilter. It's kind of like jumping out of bed too quickly in the morning. If nothing else the early punishment has removed Conor's punch. Kabib took some shots and was not only unfazed, he was clear eyed, energized and galvanized by it. That had to sink Macgregor's ideas even further, because that was so apparent. To be invited to stand toe to toe by Kabib, and having Kabib's jabs hurt him badly took the rest of the stuffing out of Conor. At this point Macgregor is fouling left and right; The most egregious was the illegal knee on the ground. He would also try to land fingers in Kabib's eyes and if he weren't so afraid of the takedowns, and if Kabib was not so insanely quick at closing the distance Mac would have fingered him in the eye. A huge aspect of this fight was Kabib staying way beyond Conor's reach. You'll note when Conor reaches an opponent, and measures, Kabib is always at least a foot beyond. And also, why play that chess game ? Hand game, footwork. Kabib just stays out of reach, or walks away. That frustrated Conor even more.Herb Dean absolutely was looking for a Conor win here. He let all those fouls go ? Maybe he is just lousy. Riddle me this. The third is Conor's best round but you must have seen Kabib gaining confidence and pep and jump. That demoralized Conor, now more than ever he was looking for a way out. More on that a bit later. Now Kabib is fully warmed up and Conor knows it.Round four is strange. Conor does well, and is winning the round, then Kabib lands a jab that wobbles Conor. After some boxing a short time later, and visibly wasted, Conor signals okay and nods. I took that as it's time to go. At that point I said "Its over". Time to lose one way or the other, and it will be on the ground. He stands and waits to get taken down. The neck crank didn't matter. It did not matter if he'd sunk the choke or not. Or if it was a head crank. This could have ended much earlier. Watch it again, that was a lame attempt at disguising giving up your back, Conor. Kabib couldn't let it go the distance and leave it in the hands of the judges. Look at what Herb Dean was doing? Look at who you are fighting. UFC needs and depends on Conor Macgregor. Rousey's Gone for Good and Lesnar is only here sporadically.I took away that Conor's fights against Diaz and Mayweather has done significant damage. His reaction is gone, as is his punch. Kabib is not slow and sending that shot from across the cage like that on Conor was insane. I don't think I've ever seen that.

Id love to see Ben Henderson come back to ufc. Against Kevin Lee, or Khabib or Eddie Alvares..any of the top 5 lightweights. Or top 145ers. Max would give him a damn good fight. Im sure hes making more money where he is because I cant see the ufc cutting him. Which means he left on his own for some reason.

why did dannis (who's conors bjj coach) say conor will submit khabib

I have been running my mouth for the last week saying conor is going to knockout khabib. I think this fight is going to be over inside 3 rounds. But I respect khabib a ton and I'm a fan of both. I also love Chaels break downs. I 100 percent have to disagree with chalk on this one. I understand and respect what's he's saying and although I never fought mma, I do consider myself a somewhat knowledgeable fan and from everything I've read and everything I've seen from khabib... I don't think conor has a prayer wrestling this man. Khabib has a lot of hype behind him (which I'm glad I been bragging up khabib for 2 years) but that wrestling and grappling are the real deal with this guy.

Khabib dominated connor

The question is who's will to win is greater on the night. Khabib will most likely takedown Conor and Conor will most likely clip Khabib but seeing their recovery will be so interesting. Fuck what a fight

Correct me if i am wrong.. but arent most of the champions at this moment.. wrestlers?? Idk if bad wrestling is good enough

when mcgregor came to the UFC... his specialties under his name on UFC website said WRESTLING. Nothing else. Nate is a jitsu legend and boxing veteran he would take out khabib as well especially with the size difference. Conor was drained at that 145 vs Chad about to die / not used to that weight cut without the IV for the first time in UFC history they removed it when he was used to recovering from the cut with it; and Mendez is an amazing wrestler.. Love khabib but I think we're sleeping on the mcgregor ground game.

Hahaha TJ was a NCAA All American wrestler though. Conors wrestling is nowhere near TJs.... Chael knows thats a ridiculous name to throw out to make that point.

UFC 300 should have been a legends LW tournament nobody ranked just some old legends that could make 155 to 165 who were willing to train their asses off for a one off old school tournament.

Cheal should defo do some conor v khabib demos in the build up.

Chael nailed it out of the park with this one. Been saying this all along. Conor is not going to approach getting good enough at wrestling, especially in a training camp to come anywhere near Kabib's wrestling so people saying he needs to be training a lot with high level wrestlers are wrong. Chael, a wrestler, nails it.

So what you're saying is average wrestling isn't enough for MMA and Connor needs to really improve it?
@JOSHUAloves16 жыл бұрын
Extremely contradicting you're saying here that you don't need great wrestling but you're saying an interview just now at 229 that someone with wrestling versus someone that doesn't have good wrestling it always ends the same that's not a paraphrase. But that's basically what you said

I don't know lol time and time again for over 20 years we've seen wrestlers dominate opponents with average or bad wrestling

Most of them didn't have Conor's elite level of striking and movement.
