If anyone has an idea why algae is growing out of my sand bed please let me know. Thanks.

Dinos!!! Add a chaeto reactor run for 24/7 dose feul 1 ml per 10 gal and thatll help your chaeto stay thriving

I had the exact same thing happen in my tank, it came in on a frag and then started to spread across rock and coming out of the sand surrounding my rock nem. Funny enough it this spreading occurred right around the time i stopped running chemipure and wanted to do a chaeto reactor. I was worried about the spread and even taken a rock out as a precaution to help prevent spreading. I was pulling it out by hand and mixing up my sand to try and help get rid of it. I switched back to a chemipure (6.5 oz in a 10 gal) and took off the reactor. Since then had stopped pulling and it has gone away completely; all i do is mix up the top layer of sand 1-2 times a week and the turkey baste the rocks down 2-3 times a week. Awesome rock nems!

Thanks. Yeah I was tired of diagnosing the algae reactor. In theory it sounds great and no reason not to work. Ended up being more trouble than it was worth. How established was your tank when you changed to a reactor? The on / off growth of the chaeto may be due to tank maturity factor. May help when it is much more stable and mature.

Moe Kayed I added it around 9.5 month and took it off at 11 month. Defs was more trouble lol. What light are you using?

Gary Hayden it's a kessil a160 tuna blue. Kind of wanting to change it. Toooooo much shimmer and really sharp shadowing on my branching corals.

i was using a a80 and the shimmer is super great but lowest setting is way too bright (used a spec controller to ramp up and down).....xr-15 goes down to 1% before off

I just added a refugium to my sump, chaeto was dying almost gone in the second week , green hair algae has always been a problem ( I have snails to handle the problem). Since all the dying chaeto is now in my tank, I have a bloom of brown algae now like I did after I cycled my tank. I did a full test today phosphate is almost zero which might be the reason why chaeto was dying. Been turning off my skimmer and took off my GFO reactor to give my tank more nutrients for the chaeto but that didn't help. So I am just like you I don't know why I am getting all this algae. The only thing is that I have a lot of marine pure 1/2 square cubes, about 60 cubes. So I don't know if that is the problem. Phosphate and Nitrates are low but I am still have the algae problem.

If you have nuisance algae growing in your display tank then I guarantee you have enough phosphates. The phosphate is inside of the algae or leaching from somewhere just enough for the algae to grow. I would put back the gfo reactor and give it a couple weeks. I will make an update video soon but I have pretty much taken care of the problem so far without chaeto reactor and am back on track. I am figuring that if algae grows on the glass with in 2-3 days of cleaning the glass than you have phosphates regardless of what your test says.

Yeah I feel you on issues that are silly and can't figure out etc.. I battled hair algea on the sand bed too : / Still duno what happend but I used a product called Fritz Algea Clean out reccomended by my lfs.. it worked well. Plus added a little carbon and gfo and things are back on track.. (ps I used like 1/5 of the amount of go reccomended)..

Thanks for the comment. Now thinking about it, I think the sand itself is leaching out phosphate. Phosphate rx is similar to fritz. Just worried about the effect it will have on my fish. Some swear by it and others say to stay away. If it works I think it will be more convenient than gfo for a nano tank.

Moe Kayed yeah. It's risky.. main thing is take it slow and maybe use half the dose if any..

I hear you. Its driving me crazy. I started doing water changes about 1 - 2 times per week for almost 4 weeks now and the algae looks healthier. I wiped the glass last night and I could see algae back on it about an hour later!!!!!! I have reverted back to what I know worked for me in the past and that is rowaphos. If that is not enough I will also start dosing nopox again. Phosguard is crap. Good luck.

Moe Kayed oh my I guess this natural water change is not going to help me then 😅 I’m gonna try Bactria 7 then someone suggested soak in marine balls then place in tank
