Chagos islanders make historic trip home without British escort - BBC News

Five people from Chagos travelling on a boat chartered by the Mauritian government, have made history as the first people to step foot on their archipelago without a British military escort, or sought British authorisation.
The trip is the culmination of years of tug-of-war legal battles with Britain over ownership of the Chagos Islands.
The United Nations' highest court has ruled that Britain's occupation of the islands is illegal, but Britain has refused to hand control to Mauritius.
As the boat landed, Chagossian Suzelle Baptiste said: "It means so much to me."
The BBC's Africa correspondent Andrew Harding reports from the archipelago.

@Prince Charles It really does feel sometimes like it is a case of manipulating white guilt in order to get whatever you want when there is no real ground for it. These islands are British indeed and although these people definitely have the right to move back they do not have any true legitimacy for individual sovereignty, let alone being taken over by the neighbouring countries who think they somehow own it just because it’s nearby when they never had sovereignty over those islands to begin with. Designs are British and people need to get over it whether they like it or not. Facts are facts. It feels like the world doesn’t like to accept that anymore when it clashes with their own agendas.
@danielwhyatt3278
@danielwhyatt3278 2 жыл бұрын
Actually I’m afraid you’ve got a lot of those facts wrong. It’s not their ancestral home. These people are descendants from Europeans who moved there as part of our British colonial exploits in populating his islands which has been hugely successful over the centuries. These are not having that always been British territories and there is no ground for them change from that through one form of guilt which is being hypocritical used by the neighbouring countries. People may not like to sit out loud, but we are not entirely on these peoples side. They have the right to move back, but these islands are still very much British territory and we are on that side of things.

People forget that it is the Chagossian people and children who are the ones suffering from these bilateral disputes, being at the centre of government spats. One big issue is the citizenship rights of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the natives of the Chagos islands. Due to great historical unfairness and anomalies in British Nationality law, the 2nd generation of descendants of the Chagos Islands do not have rights to British Citizenship, even though their parents and grandparents were born on a British Overseas Territory. This has left many Chagossian families torn, divided and separated between Mauritius, Seychelles and UK. We are trying to fix this with the Nationality & Borders Bill. There is a specific Chagossian Amendment that has been tabled, with cross-party support for the Chagossian descendants to gain their rightful rights to British Citizenship, and for them to be reunited with their families in the UK. These families have gone through generational trauma since their exile in tge 60s/70s, now their children and grandchildren are being deported from the UK because of a fault with British Nationality law. Please help us fix the law and stop this generational trauma, and grant the Chagossian descendants British Citizenship. Its about choice, those who wish to remain Mauritian have the right to do so, and those who wish to remain British have the right to do so.

I am from Scotland but consider myself British as well. I am deeply sorry to the Chagos islanders, what we did was wrong. Especially when you compare it to our argument with the Falklands, the right of self determination was suddenly thrown out the window when we wanted to build an army base in Chagos but in the Falklands we use self determination as our main argument. I guess we grant self determination to our white overseas territories only. Having a base in Chagos was very useful at the time but the least we could've done was to talk with the islanders and try to find a solution, throwing them into slums in Mauritius was just not the right thing to do and we owe these islanders an apology. Come on Britain, let them return or give them some nice compensation. Sorry lads.

The problem is this region has unique qualities that are being researched/utilized. UK/US don't want to share. But, it is not your average "Dark Site". I'm not saying it's like the series Lost. But basically it's something like the series Lost. Or in other words, There's some shit going down. Some type of anomaly or technology... You can literally feel a vibration. I have sailed ⛵ by these islands on two occasions and the same feeling from all on board both times. It's a weird vibe. As someone who has literally sailed around the world..., I can assure you there are still things out there we have a lot to learn about. In the late 1960's the US government wanted the UK to send troops to Vietnam. Hey BBC, this is a very complex story and I think you should tell the full story. Consider the fact that the British government came to a settlement with these islanders with large financial compensation and yet now they will be getting their island and keeping the money. Also consider the fact this region makes up 25 % of the earth marine protected area and now as a part of their return these islanders have the right to profit form large commercial fishing contracts. And consider the fact that these islands are set to be u der water soon. And now we will have another nation to save at the un level. Finally, these islanders are not native to these islands they live about 3 generations here and before that these islands where uninhabited

So they willingly took money to move away from the islands yet now claim otherwise. The story to this is complicated and the UK govt. did well by the inhabitants. Maybe this minor little fact should be better publicised as well as the reasons it was done. If they want to return then the money they willingly took to move away should also be returned to the UK taxpayers, who paid for it in the first place.

@@joydevsarkar4474 It's the Americans that rule the worlds oceans and its in their interest that the UK holds onto the Chagos Islands because of their military base. Any Indian support for Mauritius is a double edged sword. This is because they don't want to piss of the Americans whilst at the same time it is not in the interest of the Indian government to give the Pakistani an ally in the kashmir dispute. Ntm British support for Pakistan holds more wait than most because it was originally the British who drew the border to begin with therefore strengthening Pakistans argument.

The forced re-location is indefensible. However Mauritius has no case to claim sovereignty. The islands were uninhabited when Europeans first arrived and just because Mauritius and these islands were governed by the British by a single governor that gives Mauritius no claim. In fact by claiming these islands Mauritius is trying to build its own little Empire, which it claims to be against.
@danielwhyatt3278
@danielwhyatt3278 2 жыл бұрын
Here here. Forced relocation was not okay, but for Mauritius to claim that these are its islands when they have never been so and simply to believe they are just because they are close by is complete hypocrisy and by that logic Argentina should own the Falkland Islands. There is nothing wrong with having territories that far away from you as they only add to the diversity of what makes a country unique. We showed the world we were not going to back down when we took the Falkland Islands back and we should be willing to defend our sovereignty over these islands as well whilst allowing these people to return and helping them to thrive.

Well I think that the reaction is because it's happening today. When the vikings forced the people of Britain to leave, we had no cameras to record their pain. Now we do. For example, many wars were as bad as WW2 but it was the first war to be fully recordered, therefore it was so shocking.

They should be given opportunities to purchase or rent housing to go back and allowed to work as laborers on the military base. Or on their own if they can. As opposed to the Philippine workers already there. But Mauritius has no claim on this island. There were no natives when the Europeans arrived. It is thousands of miles away from Mauritius and both were only artificially administered together by the British. Who legally combined and separated them as colonies. There are no actual Chagos natives. The people in this video are descendants of Africans sent to labor on British plantations. Nor did their ancestors own any of the property there. It is possible the bulk of their ancestors would have gradually left on their own out of boredom if given the chance. But we all have a grass is greener elsewhere mentality, including myself. And trust me if the British never allowed a military base to be built there and instead handed it over to Mauritius the grass would not have been greener.
