@@acceleratedsloth In terms of History, if one does the math, people had been living on the Chagos islands (about 60 islands) for approximately 200 years before they were forcibly all moved to Mauritius in 1967 and the islands were taken over to build a British and American military base. The first settlements started between 1770 and 1793, by various companies that received permits from France. We can deduce that the locals were workers who decided to remain there. NO MATTER their origins, they lived there for around 200 years before... Legally speaking, it does not matter if their origin was African, European, etc. // As for Mauritians, they are considered African and their language is a mix of African, French, etc. Historians are not certain who first settled on Mauritius: it is believed it may have been the famous Phoenician merchants.

The British hypocrisy is blatant here, when it comes to respect, dignity, human n civil rights of every human beings. The British government isn't necessarily the voice of its citizens. It has to be noted here, tht recently a British MP has claimed in Parliament, tht his chagossians constituents have voiced against the expedition and the Mauritian flag planted on the island. British media hasn't verified so far as it appears, the veracity of his claim. The Chagos is still a brushed under the carpet issue fr British media n fr both Conservative and Labour MP's. The British media appears very quiet about the issue since its illegal, controversial take over by the British government, apparently fr communication purposes n turned into a military base. In saying tht, I feel the government of Mauritius should have had a very transparent understanding with all concerned about the real intention of the expedition n its purposes. The expedition should have being led by senior government officials, along with the residents of Chagos, n World media, to reclaim, Mauritius sovereignty, or making known to whoever, officially that Chagos has along been Mauritian.

I'm not going to argue with anyone, so spare your breath. I'm just posting this to inform passers-by of the facts about the Chagossians and their homeland. Yes, the islands were effectively uninhabited when the Portuguese, French and later the Brits came; and it is also true that Chagossians were descended from indentured servants of African descent. However, your comment neglects the fact that in 1967, the Brits literally removed every single Chagossian from the islands which they inhabit, under explicit threat of violence and starvation. The expulsed Chagossians were also prohibited from ever returning to the islands. I should add that international courts have recognized that the forcible expulsion of the Chagossians was completely illegal, and that the Brits have absolutely no legal sovereignty on the islands. As such, what the US and the Brits did, and are doing to the Chagossians, is criminal, unjust, unlawful, and completely indefensible. If you're willing to defend it, I implore you to consider if you would voice support for the complete purge of an entire people from their natove homeland, only to populate it with soldiers, and pollute it with toxic chemicals. Think about it, because that was what precisely happened here.
