In this video - Chain Saw HACK 3 - Capstan Winch
The main element of this project is 2 HP Chain Saw and a very solid worm gear.
The chain drive may seem like a strange solution, but believe me, the bicycle chain is very durable and resistant to heavy loads.
It is possible to use a V-belt and a pulley. It may be a better solution. Unfortunately, the clutch in my saw did not allow it, so I did a chain transmission.
Sprockets were previously used, but their usage was low so I could use them again.
The drum was made very solid, but it should be more rounded, which would give less rope resistance.
I decided on such a construction and use of a rope instead of a steel rope for several reasons:
I can use an unlimited length of rope (steel rope always has a limit)
Safety - Breaking the rope does not pose a threat to the person who is operating the winch.
Pulling force does not decrease because the rope does not wind on the drum
-To stop the winch you have to let the rope. (It is a very safe method for the user)
The speed of unrolling the rope is incomparably faster to standard winches.
I am very happy with the achieved effect. The power of the extractor is sufficient for my needs. If necessary, the saw can be unscrewed and used for cutting trees, because it is not permanently connected to the winch.
Of course, this is not a professional winch as in forestry tractors, but for domestic use it works perfectly.
Perhaps I will do a longer test and record a video as it deals with an intermediate roll and larger loads.

Thanks for all the kind words! Please, tell me, would you like to see a longer test of this winch? I have some trees to pull out, there are also heavier ones than those in the movie, but I'm not sure if it will interest you. This Reminded me of the ‘Mortar’ mixer on a trailer I fabricated in the winter of 1977-78. I am a Polish American. I built the mixer out of used motorcycle sprockets, a coal furnace ‘stoker’ gear box, an old fuel oil tank and a trailer built on an old 1940’s era car axle, rims and tires. I then went in the cement block and brick laying business. The old homemade mixer ran daily until about 2002 ( still have it and plan to patch it up to run again ) .... Gary in Michigan U. S. A.

Lots of comments saying just buy a winch, most of them seem to refer to an electric powered atv or off-road winch. You have to understand duty cycle. These electric winches and the batteries tied to them cannot work all day long like gas powered. He did a great job, these gas winches usually cost 2-3k. I’m sure he did it for a fraction. Nice work!

Finally! A hack that makes some sense. Too small for anything I deal with though. I don't have a chainsaw to spare neither. I still like the idea. If I get a spare saw, and a reduction box, I'm just might build something like this. In the meantime, the truck or four wheeler can pull little logs like that in a fraction of the time. Nice metal working skills though. I learned something.

Completely loco thought and perfect manufacturing.it is always pleasant seeing people that squeeze the brain in order to achieve a goal and make their lives easier... just a thought i have in order to make the machine more solid.wouldn`t be better to support the axle of the drum in two points so not to tire the bearings of the gearbox?i know it won`t be easy to put the roap on the drum but... by the way the drum making is a super idea!thanks for teaching and sharing..very well done and a great bravo from Greece.thumbs up

If you clip a sheet metal 'sled' to the rope just in front of the log, your winch will pull the front of log onto the sled so it won't dig into the earth and cause problems. Nice job and thanks for another great video.

Nice winch. I'm guessing its heavy, but still portable and very handy. I'm thinking the anchour mount may need repositionoing to a better alignment with the spool. Nice touch with matching the welding of the cable spool to the music. :)

Very nice build. I have the 4 stroke capstain winch which can be difficult due to having to keep the winch level for oil reasons. As skilled as you are a bearing off the drum end and a attachment point would add to your pulling power and help the life of your ropes. Thanks for posting you have me thinking on making a design of my own.

You need to put something that the rope can go trough so that the winch can always point in the direction the object you are pulling to avoid the pulley to warp and it will last much longer. Great work !!!

I like it, but if you pull a heavy weight,it will pull on the housing of the gear reducer, and break it. Have the output shaft of the worm reducer turn a stronger shaft supported on either side of the cable spool by strong bearings or pillow blocks. Very nice, Really like how you made the spool.
