"Thought this was an interesting video" - HELL YEAH it was!! Thanks a ton for posting, am a huge fan of Steve's Saloon channel but, sadly, his chainsaw bar-oil leaks video is specifically about a niche problem with specific Stihl units where some plug tends to come un-done (and Stihl has updated service reps to let them know this fault) but doesn't cover any 'regular suspects' like yours went through, again thank you very much for putting this up as my pp4218a is dumping oil after a heavy cleaning/tune-up, I couldn't figure it out, then when experimenting yesterday **it was no longer leaking oil** - I was stumped, couldn't consider it "fixed" since I'd no idea WTH happened, so pursued it anyways & found this video - your mentioning of the tightness of the bar-lube's reservoir-cap was amazing for me because I strongly suspect it was my problem! Saw never leaked oil, then leaked for some days, then stopped - I only used it for ~30sec, test-cutting to get it warm to gauge oil-leakage, while doing so I must've corrected an improperly-seated oil-reservoir cap :P Thanks again, not just for helping me with my oil-leak issue but for being a content creator like this in-general, truly appreciate what you've done here (/thumbs-up'd, /scribed!)

Good information. Saw not work fixing though, just as oil as needed or replace it.

Glad to see you posting videos again, hope all is well with your family. JB Weld might be a temporary fix for that.

+Pete Ciallella The saw is not mine so I'm not going to JB weld it, but I'm recommending that and heavier oil. Family is doing well, but it is taxing. Thanks for commenting sorry it took so long to respond.

Could you JB weld it? How about brazing it? Super glue maybe? Caulking?

This saw is an ancient antique. Nobody makes a saw like this anymore. If you have a saw that drips a lot of oil into the saw case, just drain out the oil from the saws tank when you store the saw. All liquids react when it gets hot or cold. Leaving a saw out in the hot sun will cause any saw to leak oil into the case or onto a bench.

Thicker oil won't help. Once the saw warms up the oil gets thinner. A product called Seal All would be a cheap fix and may last a long time. I've used it on gas and hydraulic tanks. I'm not a fan of JB for stuff like this, but a similar (better) product is called Marine Tex. I've actually used that to repair a cracked cylinder head and it lasted for years.

+Bruce Pender I'm recommending it to my friend's father. Not a repair I would do for someone's saw. They can give it a shot plus thicker bar oil.

Good diagnosis. Maybe a little tig welding if that is aluminum will fix it good as new.
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 8 жыл бұрын
+Craig Arndt It's not my saw and I don't tig weld. Do You? I was thinking aluminum brazing, but that is tough and I don't want to wreck the paint.
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 8 жыл бұрын
doublewide6 Nope, I don't tig weld. There is a welding place near me that did aluminum work for me on a aluminum patio table. Wind storm blew it across our yard and they tig welded the legs back on. It's an art for sure. If your customer wanted to fix it, could likely be done.

It might not be straight up aluminium. Sometimes they use magnesium alloys and things like that. And these blocks are glued together right at that spot. Who knows how the glue might affect the welding-attempt.
