lucky's run is so underrated at goml 2016, while it is definitely luck of the draw that he didnt have to beat a god in the tournament to get 4th he had to play westballz (who had beaten mang0) and n0ne (who had beaten mew2king) and also beating ice and kjh both 3-0 in the fox ditto

Lucky actually used to randomly just have crazy runs throughout his whole career before the pandemic. Big House 4 he lost to kzhu in pools and then went on a fat losers run beating colbol hbox and westballz to get 5th losing last hit to mango. He also went crazy at Genesis 5 beating mew2king and getting 5th only losing to armada twice. He's just the most inconsistent player alive along with none I feel like.

I think the most entertaining aspect of the 5 gods is how different they all were both in gameplay and personality. M2K found the most likely way to punish and forced others to play his way, Mango is the definition of fast and loose and the epitome of a glass cannon, armada was the foreigner who analytically shredded others, ppmd is the younger brother keeping up but not quite receiving the accomplishments of the others becoming the fan favorite hoping he will live up to his potential, and hbox plays the defensive win anyway possible and destroy people smallest weaknesses. The drama of real time rivalries and competition is something idk if we will ever see again and made it so easy to mythologize

I got captivated into melee with the last stock legends doc on mango vs armada i found it when smash ultimate came out. Leffen on 2015 was a beast of himself : - He started on winning BEAST 5 against both Armada and Mang0 , something that only PPMD did. - Not only that , he got 3rd at Paragon losing to M2K and Plup. - Slap there that at APEX 2015 he beat M2K and became the first player to beat all the 5 Gods (Plup came after) , and then Leffen got also 3rd place just behind PPMD and Armada. - He was on a "slump" for a couple of months but recoverd and on CEO he won it as an underdog , then proceed to also win FC Return and WTFox. - He even won Smash Con and at HTC Throwdown he won while beating Hbox 6-0 or 6-1. And at that tournament it was like upset city , M2K , Mang0 and other top players got to losers early. - It seem that only Armada can stop him at Big House 5 , but he got bodied by visa. - Just to summarize , on 2015 Leffen won 6 tournaments , have good positive head to heads against most players except Mang0 , Armada and PPMD (they only played once) , and somehow he got 3rd place lol. - Leffen also was the only Fox main that could go toe to toe with Mang0´s Falco , usually all Foxes would just win 1 from every 10 sets against Mang0 , but Leffen makes it look 50/50. - He even forced Armada to switch from Peach to Fox against him , due to how dominant Leffen was against Armada´s Peach. - Leffen have "peak moments" like the GOML 2016 run , GOML 2017 to retain his title , Smash con 2019 , and of course the EVO 2018 run - His last tournament we saw his "true peak" was on Ludwig Champion Seris 5 , were he was able to beat the TOP 2 players , Zain and Cody to win it all.

Leffen is my all time favorite. I‘ve been watching Melee ever since Big House 3 and the five gods era was just peak when it comes to vibes. Seeing this entire Leffen saga unfold right in front of me are some of my favorite memories in the context of watching esports. He has a pretty bad rep here in europe and it certainly isn’t undeserved but man he will be always be my favorite melee player. If it wasn’t for the visa issues in 2015 he would’ve been ranked nr1 that year theres no doubt in my mind. He was the best that year

US Visas for esports in particular can be a total nightmare, and the US visa system is at best incompetent and at worst outright malicious at times. My guess is that his visa was either going to be renewed but got cancelled for some reason, or that his sponsor fucked up documentation. In any case it can be hellish. A recent example would be moist esports. Their valorant team ended up missing a tournament due to limbo I believe before being eventually forced to go to Canada just to compete. The government had no reason to not approve their visas, they simply just refused to do their job. It took them literally suing the government to resolve the issue. I don’t really know much about leffen at all frankly, but with visas that is an extremely believable outcome. It’s happened to so many players, let alone actors, workers, specialists, and so on.
