Even tho every piece is original and unique from your last piece, you consistently keep a refined classic look - that’s one of the many things I love about your work, Christine did you sand the top before you used the gel stain? Ive always been afraid to use it - you give me courage - your fan Donna
@TheReclaimedHeirloom4 жыл бұрын
donnashorts1 ... thank you so much Donna 🙏💚 for your thoughtful comment I do normally sand before adding gel stain, it’s a very forgiving product. Even if your applying gel stain on top of a piece that is painted just sand off any top seal (wax, varnish or lacquer) This piece I did sand all over but it not necessary to sand off everything just the protective layer. If you want to wipe back some of the gel stain for a lighter wood appearance then you may want to sand everything off. This way the wood grain also will show a little, I like the rich wood tones but again it all depends on the look you are wanting to achieve! If you ever have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime 🤗🎨

Hi Cha! Thank you so much for the kind words!! Did you check their web site to see if they can ship to you directly? I'll look into an alternative and get back to you! 🎨🙏❤️
@chasmit20334 жыл бұрын
@@TheReclaimedHeirloom thank you for your reply. The shipping costs are four times the amount of the product. Our currency is very poor. I saw a tutorial recently where sawdust was used in place of the Saltwash. Anyhoo, thank you so much😊
@TheReclaimedHeirloom4 жыл бұрын
Cha Smit ... I totally understand with the shipping!! And that’s to much! I have seen a few videos with the sawdust and I truly believe it would look fantastic! I should make a tutorial with that idea to show people that can’t get the Saltwash so easy another alternative for a good inexpensive texture medium! I also know that paint supply shops in any country will carry a grip texture for paint. Maybe call your local paint shop that carry wall and floor paints and ask if they have any grip texture for paint and I bet that would work really well too! I say this because I recently did my front door steps with an outdoor paint and added a grip texture which look similar to Saltwash because I was covering up the orginal ceramic tiles which got icy in the winter and I felt the steps need a grip texture so definitely look into that as well 🤗💚 Let me know if you have any other questions and contact me anytime 😉

Beautiful!!!.. have a question, I've seen shellac and primer.. but have you ever used a odor blocking primer with chalk paint?.. I have a gorgeous cabinet from the Victorian period, I'm almost sure it has that old beetle shellac on it.. but it stinks to high heaven, I've tried spraying it with all suggestions, done charcoal, baking soda.. scrubbing it several times with every cleaner.. But it still stinks.. I think it was in a house with a over abundance of cats or dead things.. lol .. I'm just afraid to try a odor blocking primer not knowing if it will effect the paint, because I'm not sure what makes primer, odor blocking?
@TheReclaimedHeirloom4 жыл бұрын
Kelly Williams ... thank you so much Kelly for your kind comment and questions! 🙏🎨 So you are actually heading in the right direction! And no the odour blocking primer or shellac will not interfere with your decorative painting 😉 So the odour you are getting is deep inside the wood and it happens to a lot of really pieces for a number of reasons but mostly because of moisture. Over time plus the old varnishes etc it create that not so lovely smell lol 😂 But from my personal experience it’s great to use the odour blocking primer and shellac also had an odour blocking product as well, so either one is fine and I do recommend two coats! I used one in the past and still had a slight faint smell so two is the magic to cure that! Also depending on the size of your piece , leaving in the Sunshine really helps too! But again that is not always possible due to space and size, etc. Also but I am sure you might already do it but make sure ALL the inside is shellacked or primed too! I know it’s a pain and more work but the interior is where most of the issue of odour is coming from, including the drawers not just inside but all around, underneath and back side. My favourite go to is the shellac but no worries if all you can locate is the primer you are fine! Hopes this helps and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime 🤗🎨💚
@cassandrasmith55174 жыл бұрын
Beautiful piece❤️❤️❤️love this technique and I have used your method twice now🥰. I love the aged grungy look and tend to go in that direction more so than modern. One question is when you do the 2nd coat do you just follow the same paint in the same pattern previously laid out and then come back and add any other highlights or low lights?
@TheReclaimedHeirloom4 жыл бұрын
Cassandra Smith ... I can’t thank you enough for your thoughtful comment Cassandra 🙏💚 The aged and grunge style at the end so always an option but I love it 🥰 It may not be for everyone but that’s okay 👌 I am so glad you like it and definitely try it 😊🎨 Yes that is exactly right! I generally put down my first coat and build my colour code where I want it and it’s okay to change anything you need in this step ( it’s never very pretty at this point lol ) Then for the second layer I follow the same pattern of colours and will add some more highlights and lowlights just for added details and you can always do that with a bit of dry brushing 😉 If you ever have any questions please feel free to contact anytime 🤗💚💚
