2015 (?) Dodge Challenger 392 Shaker vs 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner 426 - Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race - Factory Stock Drag Race
First car is a 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner 426 Hemi with a 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission. What a rocket! Our second car is a Dodge Challenger 392 Shaker, which also has a TorqueFlite automatic transmission. However, this one is an 8-speed! Who do you think will win?
Oh yeah, make sure you watch the whole video so you don't miss the bonus footage of the 1970 Plymouth Road Runner take on a 1970 Buick GS 455!
Remember, both cars participate in Factory Stock class through F.A.S.T drag racing. Make sure you visit their website. www.fastdrags.com

Yea it's kind of a bummer how heavy modern cars are. Even a lowly 2003 VW golf my dad had, it weighed like 32-3300 pounds. Didn't a zo6 Vette of the time weigh close to that? What a porker for a small car. Yea safety bla bla ,no doubt I'd rather wreck in a new car vs and one but darnit ,they don't quite have the soul of the old stuff.

So, which engine can the owner actually work on? Which engine would still fire up after an EMP from a nuke? Which transmission can be rebuild on the kitchen counter top with a Chilton's repair manual and a six pack of Bud? Which one has sheet metal that can withstand a hail storm with pea-sized hail? Which one has a hood scoop that actually serves a purpose? Which one offends Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the most with it's rich, eye-burning dual quads? Yeah, no contest.

@badgerbait8351
@badgerbait8351 4 жыл бұрын
@@1967davethewave Functional, to some extent. The modern shaker hood is not an engine air source. I believe it serves to assist with engine cooling only. The engine's combustion air comes through the driver's side headlight. The engine is totally operational without the shaker. However, the air grabber used in 1970 is the primary source of engine combustion air. Nothing else.
@calebemerson9317
@calebemerson9317 4 жыл бұрын
Badger Bait that air grabber does nothing. It’s cool for looks but fictionally it does little if anything. There is a boundary layer or air riding on the car that only travels about 10mph at high speeds. Ergo, not really any air going in. It’s just cool.
@badgerbait8351
@badgerbait8351 4 жыл бұрын
@@calebemerson9317 Man, I am certainly no expert on the mopar inductions, but I have to disagree with you on this one! Looking at the air cleaner, it is totally encased in a sealed box that is part of the hood. Once the hood closes, the air cleaner has no other means of getting air other than the hood scoop, so it appears. Even if the air grabber scoop becomes less effective at speed, it would still provide cooler air even if it's in a low air pressure spot?!

In the end when I hear, "Has it got a HEMI?" answered with a "yes". The only truly acceptable view under the hood is a 426 from the 60s and very early 1970s. Everything else is just a disappointment. Dodge slaps the word on EVERYTHING today and has pretty much done all they can to render it generic and meaningless. IMO. It's even all over my Ram Truck with a pretty everyday driver 5.7 V8 under the hood making far less than what can ever be called impressive levels of power by today's standard. I miss the day when you heard or saw "Hemi" and it actually meant "top dog". I own a 1979 Suburban with Silverado trim, so it's got all the "bells and whistles", and I work in a GM dealership as a mechanic. The old air jacks we have lift my old 'Burban like it's nothing, but they won't lift a late model one unless the compressor is fully pumped up. @livewire2759
@livewire2759 4 жыл бұрын
@@RCredneck85 That's true, they are not small, however, compared to the original Challengers from the early 70s, they are about the same in outside dimensions, but have less room inside and weigh considerably more. The average full size car in the last 30 years is about 20% smaller in length and width, with less interior room and trunk space than full size cars of the 60s and 70s, and the modern cars weigh about 10% more due to miles of wiring and computer systems in every single car. I was involved in stock car racing (small local dirt tracks) in the 90s, when people were building monte carlos from the 70s and 80s. racers hung on to those cars well into the 2000s, and even to this day, simply because it is so much easier and cheaper to build them than it is to build a monte from the 90s or early 2000s, again simply due to all the extra crap the manufacturers put in the modern cars.

I'm going to say the Hemi Roadrunner was heavily modified and optimized to make it run like that. I grew up when these were new and new-ish and the Hemi was NOT a street able car... highly unreliable, and very cold starting. Same for Fords Boss 429...sold with a "cork up its rear" very restricted, very tame...needed loads of mods and changes to unlock its potential. The Road Runners are neat to see tidy and restored at Auctions and Shows today, but they were cheap, very poorly built throwaway cars back in the day, and I remember vividly when they were 800-1200$ cars on "buy here/pay here" used car lots and no one wanted them.

The hemi isn’t heavily modified. I forget exactly what the owner reported, but something like compression ratio was increased around 1-1.5 points, mandrel bent exhaust, aggressive gearing, shift kit, and dyno tuning for 110 octane. There’s plenty of them in Pure Stock that push the rules a little bit more and run deep into the 11s, even one in the high 10s.

I didn't remember the race with the GS, but regardless, the R.Runner proved quite a few different things that I have been waiting to see for quite a while now. The original cars have what it takes if you put the package together with the right options, they are still hard to beat and proves that they knew what they were doing back during those days. My days! Today's cars are really awesome and in many ways are better than the old girls. I still like the original styling and the eat you alive aggressiveness, the roots of today's muscle over the retro styling of the cars we have today. But today's cars bring a lot more to the table as far as handling and brakes, etc., you have to believe that the cars they make today are much better all-around cars.

The Roadrunner cannot be stock. The Gross rating of 425 hp is actually around 350 Net hp as rated today. The 426 Roadrunner was good for a quarter mile time of the low 13’s in stock form.

That GS was about what a true GS was tested at back in the day by the magazines. Magazines were getting about the same out of the Hemi cars. There was a car test show back in thecday hosted by Bud Lindeman(sp?) that you can find here on KZbin. One episode they tested a 1970 Hemi Charger 500 with an auto that was running consistent 14.0 second quarter mile times. The mid to low 12s of this Roadrunner was not bone stock back in the day. Low 13s like the Buick would be more realistic. Now, people who were serious hobbyist drag racers were getting 10s out of their Hemi cars with just a few mods, even back then, but bone stock off a late 1960s to 1970/'71 was 13s for all brands' period muscle cars at their fastest.

@@culcune Something fun to look at is the list of 50 fastest (1/4 mile) muscle cars as listed by Muscle Car Review and Car Craft that I believe was compiled back in the 80s. Perhaps you've seen it. It's a compilation of tests of said cars during their debut back in the 60s and 70s by the big magazines. Interestingly, the 70 Road Runner Hemi was #8 on the list running a 13.34. The Buick Stage 1 was #9 running a 13.38! Of course, the big dogs were #1, the AC Cobra 427 and the 66 Vette 427 with 3x2s. Hemi then took #3 and 4 followed by the 454 Chevelle. First small block on the list? A dang Boss 351 in a 71 stang!!!

@@badgerbait8351 Have not seen it, or maybe have? I subscribed to Hot Rod and Car Craft back in high school in the mid-80s. When I was in college, I used to waste time at the library by going to the microfiche room and reading through the old car magazines from the late 60s to the 80s. It was interesting reading the car mags' perspectives of new cars from the period. In other words, I first learned of the 1970 LS6 Chevelle 17 or 18 years after the fact in a later 80s Hot Rod magazine article, but it was interesting reading about them as a new car from late 60s articles about them in various car magazines. The lack of foreign cars meant very few articles about them in the mainstream car magazines and the magazines were chock full of muscle cars being reviewed as, well, exciting transportation machines. This was found at Cal State University, Northridge. I lived near the university until 2002, when I finally moved out of the L.A. area altogether, but the university was devastated by the 1994 earthquake, and when they finally reopened the library in 1995, and I was working on some post-graduate classes, it was all new, and the microfiche room was gone. No digital copies of old magazines either as they had sadly dumped numerous materials during the rebuild.

When the gen 2 Hemi engines were still in production, I read an article which said the later street Hemi engines actually put out more power than the earlier versions. Supposedly, small tweaks and improvements over the years had added upwards of 30 H.P. I believe this was around the time that Chrysler switched to hydraulic cams for Hemi engines. I don't remember hearing this anywhere else. Does anyone know if this is true?

Know its for EPA bs but any more than 4-5 tops seems too much. 8 and 10 spds would irritate the hell outta me always shifting or hunting for a gear.
