I was there back in 89 when the program was still new. The concept was very positive but there was abuse in many ways. I don't think that the parents knew what they were sending us to. It definitely was no "summer camp". It was run by a bunch of ex military guys that tried their darndest to change us instead of trying to guide us. Definitely an experience that I will always remember.

Hi Samantha. I'm so sorry you had to witness what happened to Kristen. You're not alone in your pain. I believe we were there at the same time - summer of 1990? There are many folks still struggling with what happened in Challenger. We have a Facebook group you can join if you want support. Look up "Challenger Foundations Survivors". Take care.

I went thru in 89 and again in 90, and all I learned was how to manipulate adults & build a fire with sticks

I learned how to build a fire with sticks and then bury that fire and sleep on top of it so I didn't freeze to death.

Ugh. When will parents accept that raising their kids is THEIR responsibility alone? If your kid is unruly, that's a risk you take when you procreate. Many teens act crazy. Sending them off to a labor camp is purely selfish & irresponsible. Go to a parenting class, get some therapy & learn how to communicate with your kid. Don't wanna do that? Don't reproduce.
