I own both Challengers out out Stuart Fl. My 55 year old girlfriend was driving the new car. This was her first track experience with a stick shift car. We had no idea this video was being made at the time. The SRT is a stock track pack car with a cold air intake. It has been scaled at 4080 lbs no driver. On worn out original tires. Once we learned the right balance of slipping the clutch (to avoid tire spin) this car went 13.30 @ 107 mph. The T/A is a numbers matching sleeper. The small block is sporting a set of W 2 heads and a small roller cam. The original trans had worn syncros and a worn shifter. It had 3.91 gears, drag radials and factory suspension with NO traction devices. This is more of a road course car. I was being careful as my previous trip to the track resulted in a broken rear u-joint,pinion yoke and bent drive shaft. The 115.90 mph points that the engine is making power and with a good launch should run quicker than 11.50s. This car has also been scaled and with out driver is 3525lbs. This was ment to be a fun evening to the track with my girl and two FUN cars not a full out competition. The T/A is a quicker car. The SRT will run 170 + mph stock! corner like its on rails and gives me 24 mpg. I love them both and will most likely be adding a Hellcat when available in yellow to the collection.

Sir, I just want to tell you that I admire your taste and the fact that you went out to have fun in such an awesome way with your wife! I've always been in love with the Challenger, specifically the '70s R/T model. I'm not from the US, but one day I'm hoping to restore one of these magnificent cars and give it the love it deserves. Of course in yellow, as it's my favorite color as well! Oh, and don't worry, it will NOT be a garage queen, that's for sure! I'll drive it as hard as I can, but also give it proper care. Thanks for sharing!

LOL. The 340's weren't stock when they were stock. Look up some of the stats. The early RT's were as underrated as the 302 Z's. Only rated at 290hp factory but there have been many dynos prove that wrong with h.p ranging from 320 to 350hp. Plus you also have to take into account of what the drive gear diffence between the R/T's and what the street hemi new challengers are running.

The mustang might have started the retro look and I had high hopes for the Camaro ( had a '68 in highschool ) but out of all the new "retro-styled" muscle cars, the Challenger is the most true to form and looks awesome! But if I had a sh*tload of money to spend, I would still buy a restored original. =)

Amen Mike !! I love all 3 of the new versions! Just wished they had built the retros a few years back when I had money and could afforded one ! I bought a 70 Challenger T/A 340 SIX PAK in June of 72. Mine was the blue one with the black alligator skin roof. It had the original exhaust with the pipes coming out in front of the rear tires. OH MY GAWD what a sound ! ! ! If I parked under the awning at the local drive in the vibration on that awning was so loud people couldn't hear each other talk L0L !! Just looking at it while it was parked it look like it was doing about 100 mph, ha ha well not quite but it did look fast. But OldGamerConsolePCPlayerDude above you is right about the rated HP, I would bet it was closer to 390 HP instead of 290 HP! ! I did bury the needle past the 140 mph mark one night, running against a buddy with his 396 Camaro. By the time I hit second he was in my rear view mirror. I went ahead and let it rip to see what the top end was. Got myself a shrunken piston out of that deal. I loved the 68 - 69 Camaros, would love to have either one today. But I'd sell my soul for another T/A 340 SIX PAK. & have the motor that we built after I screwed that piston up. After the dome top pistons and shaving the heads it was pushing ( as I recall ) about 11 - to 1 compression. Yeah it was crazy.

judging on the driver switched cars footage, i can only deduce/assume that the SRT had poor traction/launch tires for this kind of scenario which led to many poor launches for both drivers who used it; and based on how the SRT owner was shifting the T/A i would only assume that yes it was most likely on radials that the SRT driver was not accustomed to using or they just plain and simple are poor at shifting which imo can be thrown out if they are shifting on radials in the same poor fashion its only that much worse. I think the T/A was most likely cammed, better fuel and intake to engine setup and radials all equating to some fairly stock(in appearance) mods to shave off a sec or a half off their stock time of 13s. you can even see the T/A driver attempt to "roll" off the line in the SRT that shows how much faith they had in their traction
@RobertBrumley60
@RobertBrumley60 10 жыл бұрын
The 70 340 was no slug and would do 13's from the factory. By a simple change in rear end gear ration to 410's and a cheater cam, (which would allow it to remain in stock eliminator) more duration and stock lift, with factory carburation would easily turn twelves and with conditions right and good traction in the 11 second range. :)

Saltwaterebel... I agree with you 110% here buddy... Had a 71 Dodge Demon 340 with headers and stock carter thermo-quad and ran a consistant 13:20s. I upgraded to larger tube Hooker Headers, went to 15 inch L-60s on the rear. A very good Mopar mechanic jetted my carter thermo-quad and put a fuel cooler with about a foot of copper fuel line coiled inside the can on my fire wall. I put a piece of dry ice in the cooler at the track. The Demon was now going 12:60s. That Mechanic always said cold fuel and a good breathing 340 was unbeatable. Like you I never had any problems with any fords, but there was a 67 built 327 SS Chevelle that gave me a run for my money. I was basic stock. He had pistons, heads and the works though... Love them 340s. Race engines in disguise...LOL

Spaniard Martinez, I disagree. Engineers have alot more regulations to deal with than they did back then. Remember '71? They started having to put emissions gear on the engines and hp went down. Emissions got more and more strict and in '75 they all had to put 'cats' on and hp plumeted, and they all got slow. Add in increasing safety regs, and ever tightening budgets, and todays machines are much better than in the '60's. That being said, I do prefer the look and feel of '60's iron.

That car has been seriously tweaked. Still, it was cool watching it beat the socks off the SRT8. Gotta love 'ol skool!! As far as drivers go I think the guy in the '70 was better driver. Here are the stats on a "STOCK" 340 six pac Challenger,,,,,,,, Identification data Dodge Challenger T/A as offered for the year 1970 since September 1970 in North America U.S. Engine manufacturer: Chrysler V-8 340 Fuel system: 3 carburetors Horsepower gross: 216 kW / 294 PS / 290 hp (SAE gross) Torque gross: 468 Nm / 345 ft-lb Accelerations: 0-50 mph (sec): 5.3 0-60 mph (sec): 7 0-100 mph (sec): 18.9 Drag times: 0- 1/4mile (sec): 15.4 I've owned 3 Chargers ('68 383, '69 440, 73 400 respectively) plus a '71 383 Road Runner so I do know my way around Mopars, "dumbass". Do you still want to bet and if so how much?

Maybe FreeeeBeer maybe. But, I'll betcha there's a bunch of Z/28 Owners that will disagree with that statement immensely. And if you go back to the 69 Z/28s with the DZ302 or the original Zapper in 68 especially the models that came with the Factory installed Cross ram dual holleys which are rare but did come in both 68 and 69, the mighty 340 would have it's hands full keeping up with those Chevys. Hey I loved the 340 but, I think the DZ302 was derated for Insurance a lot more than the Mopar.Sorry. I drove a 69 Roadchicken myself with a big block too but, I could see those Zappers hauled Ass.

No 340 car ever went 115 mph from the factory. Even a 426 HEMI Challenger, even a L88 430 hp 69 Corvette did not go 115 when they were new. Even a blueprinted and refined pure stock 340 competitor could not manage 115. If that is a 340, it has aftermarket cylinder heads, camshaft, headers, intake manifold, carburetor.

But for those of you who are young or don't know a lot about cars, there is no way a "stock" 340 car can do 12.07. Impossible! High 13's with drag radials I'm sure, not low 12's. Although if I had my choice of either car it would be the 70. Both nice cars though.

Back in 1984 I owned a all original TA 340 Six Pack it was from the original owner had 43.000 miles on it it was a four speed 3.91 rear gears. (I traded him a RT SE 70 Challenger for it.) Back in those days these cars were falling out of the trees like fruit. I put headers on it and some slicks re curved the distributor and re jetted the carbs just a little because of the headers. It ran 12.60s all day long if I would have put in a little more rear gear a slightly bigger cam and maybe a little head work I am positive it would have been in the high 11s no problem.

They are not discontinuing the Challenger anytime soon. They just unveiled a new exterior, interior, and hellcat supercharged motor this week for the 2015 SRT Challenger. That would be foolish to go to all the work of retooling to offer a change in style for just one year. There were talks of the Cuda coming back, but the head of SRT stated in an interview last year that it was not in the cards for the immediate future, and was a rumor that got a little out of hand. However he did not say it was not a possibility down the line. SRT just put out a video today showcasing the newly redesigned challenger for 2015 =ZUyBFrAJAlE

For those of you who were surprised by this, you shouldn't be. Compared to old cars, new cars are heavy as hell! Why? Because of all of the unnecessary shit that is packed into them. Power everything. DVD players. Power seats and windows. Air conditioning. Then there is all of the government mandated safety shit like airbags, ten ton bumpers, tire monitoring system, etc. ALL of it adds up. The new Challenger is not only a lot bigger than the old one, it is a LOT heavier. Power to weight ratio is the bottom line. It always has been and always will be. Put the new car on a diet and it wins instead of getting it's ass kicked repeatedly.

I did a number of mods to it and the best I ever ran was a low 13. it was a 4 speed but later down the road I put a Doug Nash 5 speed in it. Mine had the louvers on the back rear window. The T/A stock came with offset rockers and also on the side of the block there was the letters T/A cast into it. The moved the antenna to the back it had something to do with the fiberglass hood radio reception. The T/A also came stock with different size tires in front and back.

@Dogboy1960
@Dogboy1960 9 жыл бұрын
1fastdoorslammer Uh......no. Get a clue. The 340 was a GREAT engine in it's day. Set up it can be a strong runner. But the real problem is found in it's extremely short production run. The Chevy 350 benefits from a much longer run. For each incremental HP increase desired... you can do it more easily and cost effectively with the Chevy. That's a win plain and simple. If it's STOCK vs STOCK from back in the day that you want to limit this to? The 340 still loses. The hottest 340 in that time period made less power than the 1970 LT-1 350 Chevy. The LT-1 came with all the tricks in Chevy's play book for the small block learned in the 302 program for racing in a larger displacement package. Chryslers are cool and given how much rarer they are.....I'd personally much rather have an old Barracuda or Challenger set up with a 340 for trans am racing......but I say that with the understanding that it's the cool factor I'm after.....if it was the faster car I wanted I'd have to take the 1970 Z/28 or Corvette with the LT-1.
@kctransplant70
@kctransplant70 9 жыл бұрын
Dogboy1960 I actually prefer the 327 over the 350. With the shorter stroke it revs a lot better. Same with big blocks, I like the 427 better the 454 for the same reason. Sure, they give up a little torque, but they just seem to run better. The L79 327 in the '66 Nova was wicked fast, and it isn't even the hottest 327! The L76 had a solid lifter 30/30 cam, and the L84 was basically the fuel injected version of the L76. Given, the LT1 is a GREAT engine and Corvettes and Camaros with the LT1 ARE fast as hell. I wouldn't discount the Chrysler 340 though, the best two smallblocks EVER made are the Chevy 327 and the Chrysler 340.
@Dogboy1960
@Dogboy1960 9 жыл бұрын
kctransplant70 In theory the 327 should be the higher revving motor vs a 350 but that's just not the case. Both motors ,along with the 302 share a 4" bore. the Shorter stroke in a 327 suggests it's slower piston speed means less stress vs the 350....allowing it to spin to faster RPMs more safely. That's the argument anyway. The only problem with that argument is found in all the development that went into the 302 for trans am racing. It was the 302 that saw the most effort to go racing. The 1970 LT1 350 is without dispute the very strongest and most performance you could by in a pre-smog era Small block. But what is found inside that engine was mostly just all the great stuff that came out of the 302 racing effort. The LT-1 got all the tricks and improvements from the 302s full on racing effort, free floating wrist pins, forged rods and steel crank along with 48 extra cubic inches of displacement. The 327 was history by the late 60s it faded away too early to benefit from 302 engine development. The 327 was the best Chevy Small Block BEFORE the 302........but after Trans Am......I 1970 the LT-1 reigned supreme over not just Chevy's other small blocks but also Ford and Chrysler efforts as well. Nothing else even came close. Today with 40+ years of even MORE devolvement and time the LT-1 is nothing special vs what you could easily build now but back in the day this was as strong as you could get.

I have been to the track and run against a lot of SRT8's, including the Chrysler 300, and none have run this slow. I was running 14.4's at 96 mph on radials in a 1990 5.0 Mustang and they were all high 12's and low 13's. There's no way a 425 - 470 hp (depending on year) car runs 14's. And 104 mph is supposed to be a 13.2 quarter. That driver has no clue how to drag race that car. Also, stock 1970 340 6 pack runs 14.5's. This thing is no where near stock. You can tell just by listening to it.

You don't do ya. As a matter of fact, I don't believe you know very much about Cars at all! You know a lot less than you think you do anyways.

***** Congrats on being able to build a Race Car with your Buds helping out. Here's my question tho. Do your buds think that 340 is stock also? Have they watched that video? If the answer to both questions is yes, I don't believe your "Bracket Car" is going to do too well. Unless of course you are entering a stout running 18 second Grocery Getter which won't spin a Tire even on wet pavement never mind a rubber coated track. While they are obviously very consistent because wheelspin never comes into the Equation, I find it easy to fall asleep at the half track marker just watching these folks like you play wannabe a Racer with only 100 ponies under the Hood. C Ya.......

***** You may very well have mentioned that you're building a Dodge pickup in an earlier post before I came onto this Forum. But, nothing was said about a Pickup that I can recall. Now, with that said, I'm going to save you a lot of mental Angst by saying that this pissing match you started because you refused to admit the obvious has grown somewhat boring and repetitive to say the least and I will leave you to observe your own words and read all the surrounding replies regarding whether or not the 70 340 T/A Cuda is stock or not. After all, that is what the original Subject was before you started keyboard bashing so, just let me end all this foolishness by saying that contrary to your Opinion, I don't have a Problem with younger Racers as you say. I was one myself once. My only concern at the start of this repartee was that you were insisting a Car was stock when virtually everyone else who gave their Opinion on here said it was obviously not so, myself included. All you had to have done was say "Ok, I guess I'm wrong here" but, that doesn't seem to be possible for you to say. If anyone is being "ignorant and arrogant" here, it is you my young padouin! Look back on your Comments and you will see the error of your ways and also take note that you are the individual who started calling People "pieces of shit" on this Comment section. I believe it is you that needs to become more observant and you also need to learn to admit when you are wrong. Good Luck with your Project. have many safe Passes and continue to grow up!

Geez, I never cease to amaze myself! I watched the first half of the first run and mumbled, "Looks like about 11.9" referring to the 340/6pk. Damn, within 1/100th sec, not bad if I don't say so meself! ...think I busted my arm patting meself on the back ...he DOES need to grease that shifter though.
