Drag tests of unmodified, never rebuilt, original muscle cars are the best. It's like being there 'back in the day'. F.A.S.T. and Pure Stock are cool, but this is REAL stock. I really wish more owners of low mileage, 100% original museum cars were willing to race like this. It would make for a great race series. R.I.P. PBIR. 25 years ago work would bring to that area once a month, and I would always take my rental car to Test N Tune night. 4 cyl Oldsmobile Achivas' went 17.7 and a 3.8 Taurus would go 16.8 @ 82mph. Never had so much fun going so slow! Guys in the staging lanes would go nuts when they found it it was a rental. Just had to remove all traces of shoe polish lettering from the windows before returning the car! Awesome video!!

In the early 1980's my friends older brother bought a 1968 R code mustang GT notchback 4 speed car missing the engine for $800. It was black with a gold c stripe and it had 40K original miles with a totally straight body and rust free! He threw a 351C 2V in the car and sold it for $2500 but kept the ram air scoop setup. I offered him $3000 if he included the ram air but he wanted the ram air for his 1967 fastback so he didn't sell it to me. Looking back on it I should have offered $2500 and not have asked for the ram air setup! He thought it was a 390 GT and had no idea it was a 428 CJ.

Great video! Sad to see that track close up. Friends had a 69 CJ, 4 speed convertible. One of 3 built I found out later. I helped with it back in the 70s and started a lifelong love of drag racing. It was originally run as a stock class car and had a national record in H/S. It was moved up into SS/HA, converted to auto, tubbed, huge ladder bars and won class a few times. That car had to run against Bob Reed's Hemi Cuda in NED points and eliminator. We never did beat him, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Rich Baldassari (RIP) drove it and owned it with a guy named Terry Dubowick. Great guys and memories! That car was sold to a Ford racer named John Pressing who had it for many years. I saw it was auctioned a few years ago, after being returned to stock condition, for over $100K. Probably worth more now. Thanks!

In the late 70's I bought a 68 mustang GT 390 for $1350.00 at a Chevy dealership, trade in. It had 91,000 miles, blue with white hood stripes and working A/C. Why so cheep? The C6 transmission was slipping badly so I took it to a transmission shop to get it rebuilt, $320. When I picked it up that night I took it to the track and with the G7014 tires and no positraction I was able to turn 13.92 with the tires chirping 2nd and 3rd at the end. I ended up selling it in 81 with 138,000 miles due to the connecting rod knock and started smoking. I wish I still had that car it was lots of fun to drive. I had a 67 s code coupe that I raced. I put a 428PI, PI auto trans also in it with it's 3000 stall converter. To drive the car I put my left elbow on the armrest left hand drives, elbow position helps to keep car straight. As on your car mine didn't have enough traction either in beginning. So I pedaled the car (or babied) pushing at traction limit until 65mph at which time gas pedal goes to floor (I could feel the car flex/twist) I am 3 car lengths behind other guy at this point. At 5800 I shift to 3rd and by end of 1/4 I am usually 3-4 car lengths ahead. I had 3.31 gear, 715 single pump vac. secondary holly, headers, TRW cam .500 lift 300 deg. 58 deg. overlap. At end of 1/4 i am doing 115. Top speed of car was 135 or speedo pointed straight down.

Trap speed was limited by its rear gear ratio. Motor was wound out 1200 feet from the finish line, and so quit accelerating at that point. The eighth mile trap speed ordinarily would indicate a quarter mile trap speed between 105 and 110. Like the guy says, taller gear or taller tires would have let it accelerate the full quarter mile, and both trap speed and ET would have been better.

I'd love to see the car run with the factory cast iron C80E-9510-C intake manifold. The times would probably be the same or a little faster because the original intake flows better than the aluminum Police Interceptor intake. The only advantage it has is the around 35 pound weight savings. Also check to see if maybe the gears were changed out since the intake was changed. The 4.30 gears would cause the issue you had. Back in the day, people in the know knew the 3.91s were the way to go.

Having been an ardent drag racer both street and strip in the very early 70s through about 74, (after getting back from Vietnam and out of the Marines) when listening to what he said about regular exhaust manifolds through the mufflers, I don’t know that I can recall one car that didn’t have a set of headers and most ran straight pipes if they ran anything except mufflers bolted to the collector of the header, traction bars were almost always used and a necessity, and those who did not use them usually lost the race before they started it most times. Other “slight“ modifications were virtually standard on every “muscle car“ in the day.
@roadtesttv2 жыл бұрын
@Jay Setchell Thank you for your service. We agree, most of these cars would have headers with a muffler bolted to the collector, 90/10 shocks up front and 50/50’s in the back as well as a set of sticky tires and a cam swap. That’s why we were surprise that this car made it through the years without those modifications. Also, with the mods I just mentioned, it’s clear this Mustang would easily run low to mid 12’s. Thanks for watching !!

You need to advance the timing and put racing fuel in it, that makes a gigantic difference. Also, those Cobra Jets are severely under carbureted... Would have really been nice if you would have put some slicks on it....
@wymple092 жыл бұрын
Why slicks? I didn't see any lack of traction.
@lukemeier18532 жыл бұрын
@@wymple09 he said he had to feather the throttle on launch. Also, if you advance the timing with the race fuel it makes a gigantic difference. My buddy switched to race fuel and advance the timing and would smoke the tires halfway down the track.

Those engines sure Didn't run like the bbc or bbd engines back in the Day
@lukemeier18532 жыл бұрын
@@donaldkinder6716 Clearly they did, but not with factory tune. All they needed was a proper tune, proper carb and good fuel. The Cobra Jets of the day set the pro stock records. I could easily shift my 428 at 7200 RPM and ruled the streets in my town. Only thing that would even hang with me is a BBC with nitrous.... And I would still pull away...

Only 221 1968 428 Cobra Jet Mustang coupes… in all colors … period. About 1/2 of the 221 were C6’s the other half were 4 speed. Just 221 total. Thanks for watching !!

@@roadtesttv; That’s pretty interesting. Considering that Ford produced 317,404 1968 Mustangs. 42,581 fast backs. 25,376 convertibles. That’s leaves 67,957 coupes. Carroll Shelby built 4,450 GT500’s. He also built special coupes, the EXP500 CSS for the Mexican market. Either way, only 221 GT coupes with the Cobra Jet 🐍 makes absolutely no sense. I currently own a 1969 Ford Cobra with the original 428cj. 4spd fastback. It’s 1 of approximately 14,000 Cobras Ford built that year. Of those were approximately 3,787 formal roofs.
@roadtesttv2 жыл бұрын
@Cobra Charmer Thanks for the response. What you’re not considering is that in 68, 428 Cobra Jet production didn’t start until April of 68. In 1969 Ford made 10 times the Cobra Jets that were made in 68. Long and short, whether or not it makes sense in 2022, in 1968 according to Kevin Marti and Ford Motor Company only 221 428 Cobra Jet Mustang Coupes were built. Do a little research and let me know if you find anything different. Thanks for watching. www.428cobrajet.org/production
