Mitsuhide being on Ieyasu's side and participatong in Sekigahara in SW3 is a reference to rumors that Mitsuhide actually faked his death at Yamazaki, survived, and becoming a Monk named Nakobo Tenkai. Usually he did work for Ieyasu as a Monk after that. Nioh also did the same thing, but the funny thing is, Sengoku Basara 3/Samurai Heroes also does the Tenkai thing, but i admit that the way Capcom does the Tenkai thing is... Pretty interesting. Hisahide stole his identity which cause him to become Tenkai, he ended up being a part of Kobayakawa Hideaki's faction, and he plotted to use Oichi's blood to revive Nobunaga so he can kill him all over again.

Cool video! I remember doing research on the Honnoji Incident back in university when I was trying to write a poem about it. I find it interesting that, historically, it's unclear why Mitsuhide decided to betray Nobunaga at all, though there are a number of theories, as stated in this video. For my poem, I decided to pull from all of them and write it as if Mitsuhide had multiple reasons and not just one. I even submitted the poem into my university's literary magazine and it got published.

Well I mean, some historians believe that Nobunaga told Mitsuhide to do it when he felt like what Nobunaga was doin was unjust; and that’s basically what’s happened, Mitsuhide didn’t like how Nobunaga was ruling majority of Japan
@Daniel_Coffman3 ай бұрын
That does make some sense, as while the things that Nobunaga did weren't good, it really wasn't anything that any of the other daimyou wouldn't have done, and Hideyoshi and Ieyasu even were worse tyrants; especially Ieyasu after he defeated Mitsunari's army at Sekigahara. Hideyoshi invaded Korea apparently because why the heck not, and killed women and children, and after Ieyasu united Japan, he literally forced all of the other daimyou to go clear from their territories to Edo and all the way back for their meetings, keeping them in a constant spending loop and keeping them from being able to amass any power at home. And fitting with Yoshiki's Kingdom in Persona 5 Tactica bearing a parodied version of the Tokugawa family crest and being all about surveillance and control in the name of "love," this act of making them all go clear to Edo from even the very edges of Japan very much would have set them up for extreme and overbearing surveillance. I think really the only reason why Nobunaga is made to look as cruel as he is is simply because he basically replied to Shingen Takeda with a "Screw you" that everyone took literally.

Full disclosure: of this series, I have only played SW3. In SW3, the greater context of Mitsuhide's story does at least shadow some of the things you liked about the others. In the first mission, you have the "Transience" intro and a "blink and you'll miss it" line: "You must surpass me one day, Mitsuhide." As far as Nobunaga is concerned, Mitsuhide is his Sith Apprentice and eventual betrayal is inevitable. But Nobunaga can't just hand it to him, hence his attempt to escape in Mitsuhide's version of Honnoji but NOT Motochika's. I would also argue Mitsuhide's last hesitation was merely being concerned about his men, not actual concern about his main objective. His resolve did not waver the rest of the mission, and the regret did not come until Honnoji led to Yamazaki. In that context, I for one thought Hideyoshi's accusation landed: "You made the choice to take Nobunaga's life, and you thought you could handle it!" It is here that the diversion of the timeline occurs. If Mitsuhide decides he went too far after losing Motochika, he also discovers that he needs a redemption arc more than he needs to rule the land. That's why him teaming up with Ieyasu was enough to make his story my second favorite in the game. If Motochika survives, then in the middle of the gauntlet to defeat Ieyasu, the rock star finally lets one thing slip- it is the very fact that Mitsuhide is still conflicted about the violence that leads Motochika to declare him worthy to rule. Mitsuhide winds up with a similar philosophy on both paths, and in both paths he could safely say, "I no longer hear the screams of my people." In that light, I'd say he successfully did what he set out to do. But I can see that the very fact I prefer Motochika's version of Honnoji itself to Mitsuhide's has to be seen as a sort of failure, as does me preferring the timeline where Mitsuhide does NOT end up ruling.

Nobunaga’s version of the event is usually better, in the titles where he has one at least. I find the story told from his perspective to hit more, as opposed to Mitsuhide’s indecision. SW2’s version of the incident is one of my favorites from Nobunaga’s perspective because his version of the ending cutscene is different. It completely re-contextualizes Mitsuhide’s loss of resolve at the end, without it feeling too contrived. And since it’s at the end of Nobunaga’s main story, the piece of emotion he shows gets to sit as a send off for our time with his character (not counting the dream stage). SW3 from Nobunaga’s side is probably objectively the best just off the strength of the writing in his ending cutscene. One of my favorite speeches in the series for sure. I agree with you in that SW5’s version is beautiful. Ignoring the other gripes with the title itself, it’s done so well. The build up and pay off just… hit. I wish I enjoyed the game more so that going back to play that version didn’t feel like a chore.

On the point of Cao Cao's and Oda Nobunaga's voice actor, you're right; Douglas Rye did Cao Cao's voice from Dynasty Warriors 5 to 8 and Warriors Orochi 1 and 2, and also did the initial English voice work for Oda Nobunaga in Samurai Warriors 1, before he got replaced by Brent Schaus for Samurai Warriors 2 and then Christopher Corey Smith for SW 3 and Katana and the Warriors Orochi games. Samurai Warriors 2's writing having seeming romantic undertones between the two does sort of make sense, though, as Nobunaga was actually bisexual. I'm not sure if there's any evidence that Mitsuhide himself was, though.

It's pretty wild that the ranking of Honnoji portrayal is very different depending on whose POV we're seeing. From Nobunaga's POV version of the stage, I would rank SW3's as the best, but from Mitsuhide's POV, it's the worst. SW2 is the reverse, with Mitsuhide's being very good, while Nobunaga's... not so much. SW4 has my least favorite portrayal of Nobunaga so even if he did have a version of Honnoji, I don't think it would have been that great.

Hmmm, in some way, you can kinda see the portrayal they were going for with SW2 is maybe like a honeymoon phase of being with a person for so long, agreeing with their ways despite being abusive and wrong, and having trouble getting over them being out of your life since you let them occupy such a big spot in your life when you shouldn't have. It's a bad relationship in which Mitsuhide was effectively used and the scars were left behind. Course, you aren't wrong in the fanfic-y kinda mention either because the way I even became aware of the the the dynamic between Mitshide, Nobunaga, and Ranmaru was due to a fanfiction i randomly came across as a teenager. I had no idea it was Samurai Warriors 1 and 2 related until later when I revisted the classic musou franchise. I highly recommend scoping out a copy of Samurai Warriors 3 Z on ps3. it runs much better and it's partly due to the janky frame rate of the wii version that seems to make it so messy in its gameplay feel and speed. it's really odd (but someone showed an interesting comparison of those two and other games side by side with neither seeming faster or slower oddly.)

Honestly, If Mitsuhide showed half resolve at the midpoint of Honnoji in five, for him to be fully ready at the final battle, it would still work due to how fleshed out it was and all those lost on the road to the world they desired.
