Two Champion Generators were dropped off for me to repair. In this video I show you how I diagnose the most common reasons your Champion generator will not start. First I check to make sure we have spark, then I go through the fuel system including cleaning the carburetor.

My Champion, after about 7 to 10 years of great service, would stall after running for about 5 or 10 minutes. I watched your video. went straight to the carb clean-out on my unit, about 20 minutes later - the thing was running like new. Thanks for this video! I purchased a replacement carb as well for about 15 bucks as a back-up. Even if I go that route later - your video was a huge help as it is now a no-brainer to swap a carb.

It's been my experience with every carburetor I've worked on that the throttle linkage re-attach is by far the most puzzling part of the total carb cleaning procedure - unless you know the trick... Thank you for the close-ups, sir!

Your garage reminds me of my dad's garage. He was a mechanic for over 50 years so his tools were his life. But my God, this man couldn't organize his tools for nothing. He had tools everywhere because he would never put his tools away in the proper place after he'd use them. He would waste so much time fumbling through his pile of mess just trying to find a correctly sized wrench that he'd need for a certain job. Watching him and his messy ways taught me to be freaking organized with my tools. Every single tool I own has an exact place in my toolbox and I know exactly where that tool is when I need it. But here's my big secret, I actually put my tool(s) back where they belong after I get done using them. Amazing!!!!

Great Tips in diagnosis Cecil, in my experience out of 100 failures you have 75 due to bad fuel 24 due to spark and 1 due to spark plug. I add a small plastic inline fuel filter to ALL my power equipment, motor bikes, 4 wheelers etc. $2 each at my local. Nice video Mr Skinner

My workbench is about as messy as yours. You've inspired me to clean it up a bit ;) It's a big pain to need something and can't find it right away. I bought a 3650 watt Champion generator yesterday. I put the oil in, removed the 2 shipping braces, but haven't started it, yet. I want to make sure I have enough time to play with it. I have wheels to put on it, also. I just know it will be a great generator.

You are right champion generators are the most reliable generator on the market in my opinion I've been running mine 24 hours a day every single day for like the past 5 to 6 months and it's just now having a problem but the problem with mine is it runs 20 to 40 minutes perfectly fine and then shuts off out the middle of nowhere so if somebody could help me with that that would be great please reply to this comment

I bought mine model 100558 3500 W with remote start Nov 2020 and use it daily though not 24 hours a day. It seems my 20 amp push button circuit breaker is wearing out and if I run anything but a couple of lights and one TV it shuts off. It starts right back up but still won't run anything else. Now it's starting to shut off a couple of times before it actually holds and runs. It's not the low oil shut off. My oil level is fine. My problem is that I can't find any part number info and customer service/tech support is non existent. Parts aren't available on their website either. Does anyone know if all Champion portable generators use the same circuit breaker? TYIA

A messy shop (or truck) is a busy shop! When I've spent a considerable amount of time looking for a part or tool I know I have, give up, go buy a new one, then have it show up a week or so later, then it's definitely time to clean the shop or truck! At least a little :)

lookin' into carb from throttle side are a number of teeny tiny holes in the body or barrel? of carb.after carb soaked a while I found a port on air filter side that seems to empty into those teeny holes, I blew out with an air gun. cleaned spark plug and air filter which is needed. I ended up having a great generator to give back to friend.

Gave up. Great video still, I watched it again. I ASSUME the on/off switch is bad but can't get to it. Tried pulling it out the front but no success and don't want to ruin it. Really miffed, but it's exactly as I expected. Maybe I'll run across a video for the switch.

I DID IT!! My Champion was made may 2011. Not bad for 10 years. I failed to have the plug touching the motor/frame so it wasn't grounded so no spark anyway. I got a new plug at a auto parts place - they cross referenced my old one. Got it to show a spark, put it together, cranked the 2nd pull. OUTSTANDING and thanks. So simple. I got discouraged when I couldn't find the exact plug.

Hey Cecil when you had the float Bowl off, you should have stripped a wire like a copper wire and folded back all but three strands Twisted those together and pushed it up the center of the carburetor. Now you're pulling the whole carburetor, you could have saved a few steps! It's okay though we all need to learn... and you are a great teacher, maybe that should be your new profession!

Thanks Aaron, But doing it the way you say would only clean the vertical holes in the pilot jet... But it was the horizontal holes that was plugged on this pilot jet.... Taking it apart will most likely always save you time in the long run, in my experience. I was wanting to show folks that the little side holes on the pilot jet has to be cleaned as well, or the engine will lean out as well. Thanks Aaron, If I was younger I may have considered being a teacher. Thanks again. You take care ttyl... Cheers 🌞

Call that number on the top of your generator there should be a decal with like an 877 number... It takes a while to get someone on the phone but the guy I talked to about my broken rocker bridge is sent me the whole rocker assembly he was going to ship me a whole new motor but it runs I told him just to give me the rocker parts... I am now having a low voltage issue without my usual problem solving success.. Can't get my 80cc to put out more than 80-100 volts and it's only the second time I used it. I bought during a power outtage in 2013 and it's sat ever since worked good when I bought it ran all the lights i hooked to it mostly LED lights and our fridge and it did fairly well. Now it seems pooped out... This 80cc has no AVR to adjust that can find it's just a plug coupler behind the generator cover. If anyone needs the number for Champion I have it... And it works just gotta stay on hold till they answer... And by the way the customer service people speak English they are based here in the USA. Midland Ohio I think the guy said is where he was at...

Good stuff to know. Water in the fuel must have caused my generator issues. Put in Seafom and gas line anti-freeze and it ran fine. Many times water in the fuel causes it to run poorly or not at all. For those that don't know how to tell of water is in the fuel, shine a flashlight into the tank. If see globs floating around in the fuel, those are globs of water and gas line anti-freeze should fix it up

After I clnd carb, I bolted it up temporarily to see if it would start, when it did I installed air cleaner assembly. there is a yellow screw head that adjusts the governor. I'd say u need an electrical load close to gen's wattage to check and adjust governor. I checked the brushes of generator and cleaned the spark arrester also, yes changed oil too
@cameronbuttigieg9060
@cameronbuttigieg9060 6 жыл бұрын
We're off the grid too but we have a gas well so I convert these champions to run on natural gas. Out of the dozen or so that I've had, it's not often that the spark plug goes. And with the filter basket up in the tank, the float bowl stays pretty clean too, while its still running on gasoline. I just swap out the carb to a natural gas one and unfortunately it does shorten their lifespan but we run them 24/7. I change oil once a week otherwise the first thing that'll go is the exhaust valve stem will gum up and the valve will start sticking and you get backfires, hard starts, and eventually it'll stick solid and you'll have no compression. It requires pulling the valve head, tapping out the valve and filing the stem and hole smooth again. You'll have to periodically adjust the valve clearance because the exhaust valve recedes with the heat and eventually you'll have to replace the head. The next thing to go is the plastic governor gear and the generator will scream out of control until you shut it down. That requires pulling the whole damn engine apart. Hardest part of that is breaking the alternator loose. Two other things that go are on the alternator itself. The brushes and the voltage regulator. If your lights flicker for a bit before it quits producing power altogether, and the generator smells like burning plastic, your brushes have worn back until an arc has begun melting the little plastic mount. Otherwise replace the voltage regulator. Both those items are too expensive or difficult to order new. I just pull them off dead generators. Replacement valve heads are easy to come by though.

Beyond those problems, if you keep it running long enough either some parts shake themselves apart or the alternator bearings go

with 24 operation how long does your generator last? I thought it would last longer with natural gas or LP. But you would know. I am looking at buying one of these generators for off grid camping. I want to use LPG gas. I appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks

I'm so critical of how you keep your shop but I'm laughing because at least you can walk around, unlike in my tile-drywall-paint-plumbing-electrical-masonry-roofing-carpentry-fiberglassing-shop. I am a genius at stacking and packing but a moron about stowage. My Champion 3400 runs perfectly on propane but won't run on gasoline as of a few days ago. Carburetor? That last word has 4 out 5 vowels...that was fun trying to figure out which one goes where. Had to cheat finally and look how you spelled it because Google wasn't accepting any of my trys.

Hello, I think it's either the Carburetor or somewhere from the fuel tank down. Cheers!

@@SkinnersOffGrid Yeah. Fuel runs. Funny thing is it ran for 3 hours and stopped like it had run out of gas even though it had enough for 8 hours in it. We're in a week-long bout of possible rain which means no juice so I'm waiting to disassemble the Carb since it runs on propane just fine.

Just thought of a great idea! Make a plug wire holder to keep it againt a ground to get a better spark test. On a side note, should be getting s mix of dead and live logs for the sawmill! Get to milling shiplap wall sheething like you've made.

Off Grid Homesteader Cecil E Skinner I also can work with clutter as my wife puts it my organized chaos but I usually know where everything is until she can't handle it no more and moves it then I can't find it and when I asked her for it she says I didn't move it or if you would clean up your area of tools you would know where they are I did dear and you moved it and now I can't find it so I have to buy a new one at Harbor Freight Tools right the only problem with that is the receipt gets emailed to her and she calls before I get out of the door of Harbor Freight and since you don't need no more tools why are you buying tools well I didn't have no tools with me and I needed to remove the brake caliper on my sister's car to replace the brake pads don't worry the tools are staying in my sister's car yep that happened the Saturday before Easter Sunday! Lol

Hi Folks, good morning. Your bench looks just about like mine. LOL!! I'll drop off my log splitter for you to work on. HEHE!! I have to do the same thing to it. Took it off once and cleaned it enough so it would run on half choke. It needs to soak for a while because the gunk is pretty hard. Just don't take the time. Usually just use the log splitter with the wooden handle. It almost always starts. LOL!! If you clean the bench you won't be able to find anything. LOL!! Take care my friend 's Your friend Al.

Nice way to make a few extra $$ at times. I never went to school for this but did this 40 yrs ago sometimes a magneto will go bad, makes good spark for up to medium speed then starts to crap out at higher speeds, hooked up battery an car ignition coil, thru engines points ran perfect all speeds, so I knew it was not the carb. old coils can sometimes be brought back by putting in Mom's oven for a few hours. A partly sheered flywheel ket messes up the timing.

Look at it this way, you can cook ,clean or build, but you cant do all three ! You are blessed to have a good woman to support you. Bio fuels , I call it corn fuel, is the curse, the death knell for small engines. for these reasons in order of worst to bad. First it promotes water absorption via the alcohol straight from the air when sitting idle (drain tank and run carb till dry) this stops 99% of the issues with corn fuel. It also promotes the growth of algae, that when it makes contact with diesel or gasoline it dies and turns into a hard crumbly grit that plugs up fuel systems or the water below the fuel strata is highly corrosive to aluminum, white metals and turns some plastics into a goo. In 2 cycle engines you need to run a richer oil mix to compensate for a drier /hotter fuel burn or you are going to gauld the piston or cylinder wall or both. The biggest rip off from the start is a 10% mix of bio decreases efficientcy by 15% or in other words you have to buy/burn 15% more fuel to do the same work, a 15% mix decreases efficientcy by even more at 23%. (cetane rating for alcohol is 0.000 octane is 0.000 it is nothing more than a combustible filler, like wheat chaff in bread ) just plane filler material. It causes harder starts, longer warm ups, you have to burn even more fuel on top of it all when climbing steep grades and passing. THE ONLY THING BIO'S ARE GOOD FOR ARE THE POLITICIANS AND OIL CO'S. THEY GET TO TAX/SELL US "LESS" FOR "MORE" "LONGER" "SOONER" and we get the repair bills.
