This is amazing! The water that soaks into the soil will replenish the aquifers and keep wells filled. I agree plant trees on the hills to stop erosion and increase water retention.

Adding stone walls in rivers will also increase water seepage by slowing down flash floods. This can replenish the aquifers in the driest areas so wells won’t run dry. Here is a mini example… it’s called sequencing farming. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHymYoNmrbqhb6ssi=bOCdig5b-zQiv4y5

This should already be rolled out to all counties, what a major subsidy for farmers. I know someone who embraced this method back in the days. He got really discouraged when his young son fell into his water pan while he (young one) was riding a bike and was discovered after 2 days. After his burial he got really depressed and swayed away from farming. The government should also encourage farmers to fence them as soon as they are constructed for safety

A very good initiative by the Kenyan government. Politicians will always condemn these initiatives especially when they know that they may work against them, but they must know that it's the people who matter here, not them. I wish my government would do the same here in Botswana.

This makes me very hopeful for Kenya. This is a truly Kenyan idea. I am very impressed by how much this government is open to adopting very innovative ideas to encourage Kenyans to grow their own food. I have also seen the Kitchen garden project Let us grow our own food. That is the only way to guarantee ourselves sufficient high quality food free of chemicals and fertilizers, and grown in an enviromentally friendly manner. Large scale farming should be mainly for inedible cash crops in land not suitable for growing food. All areas that have quality soils and conditions should be managed by small and medium sized farms by families and communities to grow food organically.

Nice to know. Collecting water for some months is still better than not collecting rainwater at all. The water that seeps into the soil from the pan helps improve the water table over time. Farmers need to be taught to plant certain trees that assist their farm soils improve and therefore boost crop yields in the long term.

the pans would be safer and more efficient for food production if the sides were stepped in Rather than straight down. As the water soaks to lower and lower levels over the dry season; rice, amaranth, and other grain crops could be planted on the steps as they appear and they will help the water soak into the landscape, rather than letting it run off. They can also shade and cool the water and slow evaporation.

Wonderful. Some more trees will help. There should be a teaching facility together with international exchange of practical experience, i.e. SEKEM, an organisation in Egypt which changed the desert soil there into green farm land with forestry for a period of more than 40 years. Such a constant exchange of practical experience improves to master the climate change. It is important to avoid the international chemical industry which is interested only in money making and totally ignorant of destroying slowly the fertil earth, our Mother Earth. For this reason SEKEM never uses in its 40 years desert greening work any chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This is one of the fundamental requirements in farming. Myself I come from a farm, some 12 generations ago. The farm in Westphalia, Germany goes always to the eldest and still exists having never used chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
