A Peaceful Journey: Crafting Bradford Cathedral's Lantern Tower from card and paper in N Scale

Paper, card, and a LOT of time! Bradford Cathedral is slowly emerging in 1:148 scale, and this video takes you on a relaxing journey through the tranquil process of building the Lantern Tower. Watch as this delicate structure is meticulously crafted, one part at a time. This is a slow, meditative journey that showcases the calm, focused art of model making. 23 separate sections will make up this epic card and paper model of Bradford Cathedral, and I’ve now completed THREE of them!
The Lantern Tower is the latest to be finished - an elegant modern addition to the original nave that beautifully captures the atmosphere of the Cathedral. This part of the project has been particularly soothing to create, and the process of bringing it to life has been a peaceful, time-consuming endeavour, with each detail being carefully crafted over many hours.
As part of Bradford City of Culture, #bradford2025, I’m creating this N scale (1:148) model of Bradford Cathedral to be unveiled at the Cathedral in September 2025. This video offers a calming escape, providing a quiet space to unwind and watch as a miniature masterpiece comes together in front of your eyes. The thing I like about watching your channel is, no 3D printing, no laser cutting, no cricut machine. Just modelling how I like it. There is a place for the other techniques but for me this is how I modeled before I fell ill and it's the way my grandad modelled before me. I like to watch someone build from scratch and not go to a 3D printer and print it. I felt a great satisfaction building similar to this (but more with plasticard) and I guess you get a similar satisfaction knowing the work involved to get the end result. Excellent work as always

@@Chandwell But Inkscape has the advantage of being able to spend considerably more time creating a single element, which can be duplicated many many times, rather than the need to create many identical elements one at a time, requiring much more time the older way. You use the modern tools available to sympathetically preserve the older craft whilst also improving the workflow. I too have a 3D printer but would never consider utilizing it for a card modelling build, the whole point of card modelling "is the card". Great video as always Michael, loved every second of it. Poetry in motion, so therapeutic. interspersed with a joyous dog, enjoying the snow, just because it's there (a life lesson for us all🤔🙏). I'm sat here at just gone 05.00hrs feeling quite challenged, restless, in pain, my brain itching too, after physio and this video was just what I needed. Calming, distracting, mindfulness in activity. I'm so tempted by 2mm and card modelling, but I know with my other challenges, I'll never complete my other modelling. Wow! This is not a model railway construction video, this is a work of art! A refreshingly different approach here Michael, and , to my mind, a resounding success. The whole thing is so relaxing but keeps the information coming as normal, with the pictures speaking for themselves. Obviously this approach cannot eork for every video, and we'd all miss your narration, but in this case your (bold?) experiment is a massive success. As a bit of an ambient lover/player, I recognised the Zabriskie tracks, but the first one had me puzzled. Originaly thought it was a Penguin Cafe track that had slipped my mind but not 100% sure, and Shazam wasnt a great deal of help. Intrigued! Loved it!

Beautiful video, as always. Like you, I have used a scalpel for years for fine cutting, but I have recently bought two very similar small snap-off blade knives, one is made by Olfa and the other by NT-cutter. While the blades are not held quite as rigidly as the scalpel blades, they are not at all bad and they are super sharp. As almost all of your cutting is done with the extreme tip of the blade, the snap-off facility would, I think, be very useful and economical for you: not for all cases, but for some. While mine have 60 degree pointed blades, 30 degree alternatives are also available. Just a suggestion, but you might like to try. Best wishes.

Thanks Pete. Chandwell is taking a bit of a hit at the moment as work has been so busy. I've been away from home for more nights than I have been AT home in January. With the Cathedral slipping behind and the September unveiling date looking a little too close for comfort, I am having to keep my attention there for the time being. That been said, the techniques etc are all the same as they would be if I were making a Chandwell building, so they should not be too bad. These days I would do it in a computer. No mess, no waste, no wondering, where to put it when done. 3D modelling is fun. Free in Blender too. If ever needed any scale could then have much the same sections printed out and assembled like a kit.

@@Chandwell Even if you repeat part of the script from video to video, there is only so much to say about cutting windows, it does not matter to me, it is part of the ritual of watching your videos (some people attend mass every week where it is exactly the same text every time!) You do voice over, that not so many creators do but I find way easier to understand (not native English speaker, aging ears) and you voice is agreeable to listen to.

You are very patient with all that detail. At that level, a little HOe locomotive could be built. I see you don’t really use temporary jigs for assembly, and you seem to line things up by eye..

I only occasionally use jigs. I design my buildings with interior supports that keep the whole thing nice and square. The theory is you just glue it together and it automatically becomes square and true. It doesn’t always work like that in which case I make or use clamps and jigs but most of the time, it’s just as you see in this video.

I saw the square floor pieces, but I meant more the horizontal courses of the piers or columns, where I think you pushed them level with the end of a ruler or something. I would suggest to set up a main north-south and east-west centreline, so as you build outwards, the overall length and width does not begin to creep out so that at some point something that is calculated to tie in will not tie in. This dimensional creep definitely happens.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure but there are a lot of interesting theories, one being that it represents the tilt of Christ’s head on the cross. No. I do everything by hand. No machines. Only Inkscape to do the drawing. The hand-cutting is my most favourite part of the whole process. I find it very relaxing.
