@@Chandwell That was so funny seeing him standing there. Brings me to your use of curtains, now characters to add to the story. Add shapes like people sitting, furniture or boxes... Wow this has got to be tiny. But the camera picks it up. There is no fooling that.

I particularly enjoy watching each building come to life as you build them. Perhaps a mini series of videos, one for each building, but each one focusing on a different aspect of the entire process...as you suggest; windows, textures, varnishes, etc. And the roof looks perfect!

Michael, Success Again! One thing about your presentation is that you allow your audience to understand your thought process of what works and what doesn't. You're not afraid to take things you have put together and "Preform Surgery" or completely scrap something that totally does not work. I believe a lot of people get caught up in trying to make things perfect right from the start and will be stifled when something does not work, instead of just hacking off the bad and refitting a new idea. I like the explanations of why, how you plan to modify and of course, the execution. Another concept is continuing the talks on the progression of your railway with insights to the future. I do really like the instruction using Inkscape, i've used some of your ideas myself... especially just simply writing note in the file of what I'm doing, need to do and thoughts. All good when you have 10 things going at the same time. So, Inkscape uses explained as you progress are great. I would think that a mishmash of everything you stated as you progress along the back scene. Would think that with the number of structures that are mocked up you may not want to build things in order. Maybe just build a structure in the middle, see if it fits in the surroundings, adjust adjacent building and explain your thought process. guess what? You know I will though my 2 cents in...LOL! Great Work! The Chandwell Plan Board must be pleased, Happy Holidays to you and your family! Don

A definite improvement with the revised roof. I'm in awe at the skill and time you put in to getting your models just right. But looking at Chandwell it very definitely pays off. I'd love to see a video per building for the street backs - perhaps with some details around the businesses/owners too. The stories really add a lovely sense of background.

Great looking building, smart ideas and excellent work. Another triumph! Personally, my love for this channel is such that I would watch your educational, entertaining, enlightening and enthralling videos even if you were to post either of the options offered or anything else pertaining to your development of this "miserable, cloudy and somewhat seedy town. My own clumsy attempts are still not nearly presentable so learning anything from the experts is always a good thing. I would be very very interested in step by steps on anything from more lessons on INKSCAPE through the very basics of glue, cutting, materials, design, whatever but most interesting would be to see each building grow and being added to the scene. The whole town fascinates and, were I able to reduce my quite significant bulk and size to "N" Scale, I would be excited to visit as an historic landmark in model railroading is here being developed.

That's looking brilliant. I live in a small market town with very old buildings and some of those (especially window sills etc) are decidedly wonky so I wouldn't worry too much if buildings are not perfect. As for your leading question, you could have a combination of the two. "This is what I have been doing this week (showing some examples) but I'm going to look in detail how I get that lovely ridge in the flue on this building" etc.

As for how you present your video’s keep it simple, I like what you’re doing already anyway but sometimes it’s just a personal thing and you do it anyway without thinking! Reminds me of work, I’d be set a set of objectives to improve what we were doing in some way, if I thought things were ok I wouldn’t do anything but report back and say I’ve done this and that and nobody was none the wiser as everything was running well anyway, lol! Well, it looks fabulous, Michael - really atmospheric. Could be a bit dodgy down that alleyway behind the hotel late at night.... To answer your question, what I enjoy is your progress in real time - so working through one projected building at a time. I worry sometimes about the Weetabix box construction, and whether it will stand the test of time (I can't bear the idea of that fantastic hotel and station warping in the heat), but I see from this video that you are reinforcing the interior walls quite firmly, so am reassured. I know you love northern Victorian architecture, but it might be good to get a bit of 1970s lust for demolition in there, and stick a brutalist building (think Preston bus station) between some of 19th/18th century brick and stone buildings, or a faceless 1970s office block. But you have probably got all these things planned already. Thanks for the entertainment, as always. Tom
@Chandwell
@Chandwell 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Thomas! Yes, that alley is another seedy addition to Chandwell's "social fabric!" The buildings are pretty solid. Most walls are 2mm thick; some are 3mm, and all are made of more than one layer of card laminated with PVA, so I am hopeful they will stand the test of time. The layout is in an internal room that never suffers extremes of temperature so I think they will be OK. I have plans for a 1970s construction part-way down Market Street but I am not yet decided whether it will be a full building, or just a brutal extension on the back of a nicer building. At the bottom of Market Street, on the other side of High Street will be the most monstrous 1960s indoor market you will have ever seen. Think Shipley Market, but worse. Thanks for your advice as ever! Michael

I too prefer to see how each building is created as for each there is specific techniques or elements involved (like for one the rounded roof penetration). You're really on a path that not many have taken, using forced perspective and scratchbuilding. So I was hesitant to suggest the roof could be better after the last video, especially since I can't say what it would be like in person, or how much the camera might distort the view. So what I will suggest is this - on these types of videos where the perspective is changing, how about a steady shot of the view from where you regularly stand, another from ground level (though I know there's no level ground in Chandwell - wink) and maybe one panning across the scene. You already do this in a way, so I'm just being picky, but I feel it would help us understand how such a structure is viewed and how it relates to the rest of the scene. Anyway, I do like the new roof better. Good on you for having the courage to try it differently. As always, I'm ever so excited to see what comes next. Personally I prefer the "what I did this week" approach. Either way will be great.

From the look of the comments your audience appears to have spoken and prefer the what-I-did-this-week approach. I think that might also be easier to achieve. Otherwise, you will have to tailor activity to whatever the subject matter is going to be for the next video and that may not always be convenient. If you are really keen you could use the build of each building to produce a stand alone video focussing on one aspect of the build using the themes you mention and release the themed videos in between the other progress videos. I enjoyed watching the process of evolution until the roof was right. It does look much better now, although it didn't look bad last time. Stephen

I really enjoy your videos and your models look great. Two constructive comments 1) A little light weathering on your work would really add the final touch and 2) why not actually hand draw the awkward bits before you create the model as, for me, the perspective of those roof tile still doesnt look right to me. Keep up the great work

Thanks Chris - that means a lot and I do like constructive comments! I add light weathering from time to time, but it's not an area I have a lot of confidence in yet... But watch this space and hopefully you will see that improve. I am leaving the roof for now. I don't think it will ever be perfect from all angles, and I'm happy with it enough to move onto the next part of the build. Michael

I'm relatively new to card building and would benefit from the "how to" approach" rather than from a general sweep of what you've done in the last week. That said, the most important thing is to keep showing the videos.

Hi Michael. Enjoyable as always! Two suggestions from me. 1. Carry on doing what you want as it’s your project and you’ll never please everyone all of the time! It’s great whatever you do. 2. Don’t encourage the pathetic ramblings of Koi Fishface. It’s what these brainless morons feed off. You’ve no need to get into dialogue with him. Cheers mate.

Your words of wisdom resonated, Phil. Koi Fish is hidden now, so we'll never waste any mental effort on anything he writes again! Michael

Has old ‘fish features’ left the comments? I’m quite sad about that, he showed signs of being a tremendous source of added entertainment. In his own way.

I realised that I was expending more mental bandwidth on him than the people who really matter to the channel so I finally pressed the “hide user” button. Sad to lose the entertainment perhaps but no real loss! Michael
