Totally agree! When I smelled this the first time I loved it! Better than I dare say Chanel N5 parfumerie original. When I think of the original I like it but it was older powder scent that you easily recognize but sophisticated and feminine. It definitely help me appreciate why Chanel n 5 original was so good for so many years. I think femininity has change there bit in L’eau. Femininity can be all the strengths of the original but much more underground. A little metallic and messy. That’s the L’eau for me. It grows more beautiful and because you find it’s far more complex in subtlety.

Hello Dacob. Your descriptions are like poetry. I could listen to you all day. I adore Number 5 and like many people it was my first Chanel fragrance. Over the years I have added other favourites but realise that you don't have to stay loyal to only one fragrance but can enjoy others depending on how you feel. I also love Allure however Coco will remain my true favourite. I tried L'eau today and found it so fresh and pure but with a gentle warmth too. It reminded me of sweet effervescent sherbet in some notes. I will absolutely add this to my collection. Helen.

L'EAU is fun and vibrant, especially in summer months but it is great I colder months too. It does not come close to the pure perfume but it is a good extra nuance to the tradition of N°5 :) xoxo

This was the review I was waiting for. I tried this at Heathrow T5 on its launch day but did not buy as the Chanel boutique had the Les Exclusifs ETD's available in the 75ml and I felt I wanted to purchase two of those whilst they were still available. I hoping this will be available in duty free on my way back, finances willing. Thank you for your advice on how to spray this to obtain the best dry down. Your Chanel reviews are the best, they reveal your passion for the brand and I'm so pleased you are liking L'eau, I know you were sceptical. Nice that Chanel can still sneak up and suprise !!!!!

Yes, the Les Exclusifs EDT have priority for now.. at least until October, when they get officially discontinued... plus if you got Les Exclusifs at the airport you probabyl got them for tax free.. which would be even better ;) haha I was sceptical about L'EAU but I am pleasantly surprised. Its not a revolutionary fragrance by all means but its fun and fresh so I welcome it :) xoxo

I have not purchased Boy yet,i am leaning towards this more,i love Cristalle Verte,and the freshness of this . I just purchased my back stock of Gardenia and Beige ,(thank you for leaving me some Beige,i know how much you love it)as well as a few others...I will hope they make some nice sets for Christmas...I did like how long this lasted on me. I loved this review Dacob. I was resistant to L'eau ever since it was released, until I decided to think of it as not "another version of No. 5" but as a perfume of its own. I just tried it for the first time and despite my aversion to love it, I am in love! At first it reminded me of a better, more elegantly crafted, elegant and smooth Hypnotic Poison (in the dry-down, but not the opening). But I've just realized something about the dry-down of L'eau! I recognize something in the dry-down which I smell in the dry-down of my bottle of Chanel No. 5 Eau de Cologne from the 1950s. If you have access to a 1950s bottle please tell me if you notice this! Once again, my favorite perfume reviewer, thank you so much for the way you interpret these scent landscapes and share them with us!

L'eau is very light, I agree its very easy! Its a simple no 5! The pure parfum is still my favorite no. 5 ..I cant get enough of it, I wish it wasn't so expensive so I didnt have to feel crazy savoring every drop I have of it but my god its gorgeous!!!! L'eau is a nice little taste of no.5....I bought the 1.7 oz and Im excited to use it!!! I think it will be AMAZING for this spring/summer! I wonder if this is the last of the new 'versions' of no 5 they have been making. I thought it was supposed to end with "eau premiere" and I was super surprised they made another version of it again! Hmmm .....hehe

I'm trying a sample of this one today. And I completely agree with your review. I particularly like the description of the rose because I know Chanel 5 really well myself and yes the Rose is passive and it's so gorgeous. Like you said in your review the Rose is soft and so addictive but also I agree with you the ylang-ylang is just so addictive. This is what takes the perfume and this new version to the next level it's gorgeous it's woodsy and a bit dry and a perfect segue into the dry down. I do think that some of the l'exclusifs magic is in this because it does remind me a lot of 1932. Even though 1932 one is mainly just Jasmine for me. I do feel that it's a cousin to 5 and in that way similar to L'eau

Dear Ruby! Such a wonderful comment! I agree with you completely! I just do not understand the last part of your comment... Did you mean N°5 premiere or L'EAU in your last sentence? It is like 1932 in a way... for sure! But that passive rose CHANEL so masterfully does.... ugh!! Nobody matches that rose! I think the perfumeurs at CHANEL understood what nobody else understood: that is that it is close to impossible to recreate a rose scent one to one like in nature. Rose fragrances always tend to smell cheap or artificial in a way... (example Louis Vuittons exclusive Rose des Vents... geepers creepers... plastic caramel fudge oily rose)... CHANEL knows that a mini hint of rose goes n extremly long way ;) thats what makes that "passive" rose a queen ;) xoxo

Super Dacob absolutely that rose is masterful. and to me the jasmine is right alongside it stomping on top of it or letting it shine when it feels like it! lol I meant 1932 seems like the cousin to both 5 and the L'eau. The L'eau has hints of an l'exclusif in it for sure. The L'eau sparkles to me specifically in the beginning, like 1932. and 1932 plays with jasmine and the drydown beautifully which give me hints of 5.

Ah, now I get it! So true! The sparkle in L'EAU's opening is so Les Exclusifs! Its delicious! One of CHANEL's best aldehyde openings from their regular line since a long time! I just love it so much and I used up more than half my 100ml bottle already in less than a month and a half ;) xoxo

Dacob thanks for your amazing reviews. I love L'Eau too. This has a low frequency hum of the most refined musk in the drydown - beautiful. I love Eau Premiere -- I get the rosy jasmin powdery drydown from that one. And civet -- I always get that from No5 EDT. Love your reviews.

I am testing this fragrance from a sample for the first time today, so I had to revisit your review. L'eau is absolutely lovely! I agree that the citrus comes back around during the dry down. My skin chemistry just does not mesh with any other formulation, the Chanel no 5 edt being the worst of the bunch. I believe I have finally found my version that works for me. Heavenly!!!

I will pick this one up next month when I will have 2 Sephora gift cards, and the 100 ml will cost next to nothing that way. My version of not paying full price for luxury goods. Lol. I'm curious as to how you got a bottle! Here in the states we aren't even allowed to sell in until the 29th of this month. I've used it for about a week now, I wasn't too keen on it at first. I just thought it was okay. But the more I wore it the more I liked it. I don't like to mist it on even though it's nice to spray with the new aspirator. I actually prefer to spray or very close to the skin until it almost drips.

Hi David, this fragrance had its official release on September 1st in most parts of the world so thats how I got it... It did grow on me as well.. its by far not my favourite N°5 flanker but its a nice addition to the family and I will happily use it from time to time. I too prefer to spray it super close to the skin. I get much better dry down results with it that way.

i dont wanna lie, i dont like when they reformulate iconic perfumes have been created or approved by chanel or dior or jean louis scherrer them self or even cartier, i prefer they invent a new perfume and give him a totally new name, also guerlain, you cant change shalimar and still call it shalimar, for me a no go

I'll alays return to Serge. I haven't L'Eau, yet but it sounds wonderful. The only Chanel scents that I've ever been able to wear have been from the Chance line. My chemistry just rejects anything warm, complex or sophisticated. My quest continues!

Could be interesting to layer them... but L'EAU is a bit too citrussy for the pure parfum... could turn sour or acidic if not dosed right... but you will see, once th epure parfum comes, it is so rich and textured... you will love it on its own! Hi Dacob, I got the chance to spritz N5 L'eau on me the other day and liked it. Just to give you a little more history I own other Chanel fragrances as well like Les Eaux De Chanel Paris Deauville and Venise, Bleu De Chanel and Chance eau fraiche all in a 100 ml (3.4 fl oz. +) bottles. Now since I really want to own a No 5 I was just wondering which is a safer buy? A 50 ml or a 100ml? Based on its price and worth. Considering I'm not too sure if I'm going to love it in the long run? And since it's on the pricier side, I just dont want to spend a lot of money and buy the 100 ml and not use it as often as I would like to or buy the 50ml, love it and use it up in an instant. Any tip would help out a lot. Thanks!

You could purchase the 35ml to be safe. Its a decent amount of perfume to use up and see if it is something you would like to have for th elong run ;) xoxo

Do you find its gets quite sweet in the dry down? To my nose it smells the same as the n.5 EDT but without that sharp bite, I quite liked that, but found it very sweet in the dry down, bit sugary if i exaggerate it a little. It put me off however now that im thinking about it... Im undecided. What sold me was the 'it never goes cheap on you' and in my mind sweetness can be a bit cheap-y , perhaps is the omnipresence of Vanilla in perfumes that gives me that impression?

Hey! Ok, I just sprayed N5 EDP and fallowed with N5 L’eau right after ( it had to be done lol) ... the concoction just vanished on me . It literally smells as if I sprayed some generic fragrance hours ago and Im now left with a very basic , barely there,dry down . So sad ... yet interesting! They cancel each other out . The mysteries of Chanel lol. Have you had any experience with this combo? Love x

God, I 100% follow you with the Les Exclusifs-type dry down! It's absolutely sublime. Also: have you ever smelt Midnight in Paris by Van Cleef & Arpels? It's this (sadly discontinued) very popular and cheap fragrance that evokes such beautiful things it could almost be a Chanel. The smell itself isn't something Chanel would do but the whole scenery surrounding this scent definitely is! PS: REALLY curious about what you think of the brand new boutique exclusive perfume line Louis Vuitton does now!

So I wanna buy my mom a bottle of n°5 for her birthday because she says that she likes number 5 and owned it once but that was before they released the l'eau (which is the newer Version right (?)) so now I'm wondering if I should get her the new version, how much did it change? Do you think she will still like the new one?

Hi There I have no clue how your mom likes her perfumes to smell. Selecting fragrances is a very delicate process and the only way to be sure a person will like them is if the person actually tries them on. Skin chemistry plays a vital role here. In general, I would go with the concentration that she loved in the first place... If she loved the eau de toilette then I would buy that one again... or if she loved the eau de parfum then I would get her that... this way you are definitey on the safe side. The new version of N°5 is different enough to its predecessors to warrant a possible dislike as well so it is tricky given that this scent is alos not the cheapest... xoxo
