What an amazing spread of citrus! Florida is only about 2.5 hours away from where I live, so I am very blessed to be able to have easy access to FRESH citrus. I have never actually seen a dragon fruit before, but have tasted them in a fruit salad once. They are SO good! Thank you for taking time to show us what your garden is currently up to Mark!! A delightful garden and an inspiring video. I'm an expat South African living in San Francisco. I started working from home when Covid arrived (saves me 4-6 hours a day commute) and my husband is now retired. My food-growing genes started screaming for expression. We don't have much space. The whole backyard is about 35' x 45'. A third of that is under concrete, what with a stretch in front of the house and paths. It had a steep slope so my husband terraced it about 40 years ago - long before we met. There are high solid wood fences along the sides, tall trees, and fog. Throw in rats, mice, squirrels, raccoons, and jays. We had gophers but our cat has taken care of them. The soil is very fine sand and silt, very hard to actually get wet. There are some challenges is what I'm getting at! The climate is limiting because of the fog and the chill. Despite the fog, it gets really dry here. So this is what I'm doing. The best light falls on - tada! -the concrete slab in front of the house!!! I bought two small plastic zip-up greenhouses. These are amazing! I put a cherry tomato plant, and we get tomatoes! There's also a basil plant to keep it company. We get enough to use as flavouring and we made one small batch of pesto. The other greenhouse serves as a seed starter. We've had several batches of sweet carrots from it. I've just bought 6 fair-sized rectangular bins. My husband will drill drainage holes in them and raise them on bricks. These will go on the concrete. It'll cost a bundle to get good soil to fill them, but we have two compost bins going and that'll help for replenishing. In addition, there are two areas of 4'x8' that are suitable for vegetables. After much research about varieties that will grow here, many reality checks about the actual available space, and cost-effectiveness, I've ordered seeds and they're on their way. This is going to be a learning process. I doubt we'll get enough to really feed ourselves, but we can certainly grow a significant amount of fresh produce. We have two apple trees, one pear, one plum, and a nectarine, all planted by my father-in-law 50 years ago. This year we actually got some fruit. We learned to encase growing fruits in plastic bottles, slit lengthwise. I have three planters that hold ever-bearing strawberries. These suddenly appeared in the garden so I transplanted them into the big pots. We get a small handful of small, explosively flavourful berries every day. There are also blackberries along one fence. These mostly go to birds but we do get a small bowlful every so often. It took a lot of arguing but I finally prevailed and we got a professional to come in and top off the tall redwoods, and top and prune the buckeye. These were starving our little garden of light. I'd have taken these trees out completely, with my mother-in-law's full support. My spouse prevailed. These were ridiculous choices for such a small garden, and they were planted in ridiculous places. They're much too near the house, they'd swallowed the power and phone lines, their roots are cracking the narrow stone terrace walls....oh well...I'll do heavy pruning as opportunity permits.

@@MichaelSHartman neither :-) central Europe here, slightly warmer than 49° in North America, but still short 8 hour days in winter and only 7 months of growing season outside a greenhouse. But the long days in summer partially make up for it. Don't you think?

@@michaelbraun9750 Went to Alaska in September 1990, and could not get use to the day length. I stumbled across the state fair. Never before had I seen such vegetables. Turnips were 8" (20 cm) across if they were 1". Radishes were 3 to 4 inches (7 to 10 cm), and cabbage heads 2 foot across (61 cm). If someone had told me beforehand, I wouldn't have believed them. Time between frost here is April 1st to October 15th. Hard frost/freeze comes November 4th. Onion sets can go in mostly clay ground March 10th. Hope you have a great garden.

@@MichaelSHartman summer is a time of abundance, that's for sure. And Alaska is even further north than us, 18 to 20 hours of sun in summer. Our frost time is between start of November and can go as late as end of March. My "garden" currently only consists of indoor plants (a small fig tree, a limquat), 3 apple trees in a park nearby that I have decided to appropriate and a red currant plant from which I got the very first harvest (4 berries! ) this year. What's your garden's acreage?

I saw you using a short rake to handle some of the higher up branches in your citrus trees to grab fruit, so I'm wondering if you've got an older video or were planning to make one about the usual tools and tricks you use when harvesting varied sorts of plants that need more than just a snip or a tug up from the soil. Stuff that may not be as apparent as a shovel or such.

I recently moved house from a two-story suburban house with a tiny backyard (and two tiny veggie gardens as well as herbs and berries in pots) to a 11 hundred square metre block in outer suburbia! It has a fig tree, an avocado tree, an almond tree, and lots of citrus trees, lots of little veggie gardens (tomatos, peas, lettuce and carrot currently) and lots of room to make more! there's massive bunches of parsley growing around that self-seed, a massive patch of mint, rosemary and sage bushes, oregano, and we have brought our potted raspberry and blueberry bushes we hope to plant somewhere! I'm so excited to start growing much more food!

Mark throw your lemons and oranges straight into a bag, skin and all into the freezer. Like berries, all citrus freezes easily. To use, throw a lemon in a mug, poke a fork into it a couple of times and microwave for 2 mins. Careful the skin might be hot but so easy to squeeze over your fish, fresh as a daisy. Also toss garlic cloves whole into the freezer. They peel ever so easily and crush under the flat side of a knife with a little pressure. I also chop chillis and capsicum freezing for cooking. Mmmm red capsicum in scrambled eggs.

Very nice variety Mark, we have a fight with White moths, snails , slugs and various other bugs, cover our crop with netting and the black birds get thru any gap and dig up the garden beds and plants, our onions and garlic are our best survivors.

Even though I live in what's considered the banana belt of Colorado, growing citrus or any of the tropical food is only possible in a very expensive, well insulated, heated and misted greenhouse and even then it's a rarity. Just growing veggies here can be daunting. Thanks for sharing your abundance with us.
