That bass player didnt know the main line on Resting Warrior. Good thing Robert and Justin Tyson knew the line comfortably enough to hold it down for the group during the solos. Amazing performance though!!

I always kinda get turned off when Terrace solos. Like, Christian just comes in and wails and then Terrace comes in the whole band kinda chills out cuz they know Terrace cant really hang. His bebop vocabulary is so disjointed, and it doesnt feel intentional... it feels like shots in the dark. Whereas Christian knows exactly where hes going 3 turns before he gets there. Anyone else agree? Not trying to throw shade at Terrace tho... something i noticed with this specific lineup

You think it might be, that not being from New Orleans and having a thorough knowledge of where the origins of where "tings" come from, have something to do with it? Not enough study or research?

I think I get what you're saying. But I don't agree that it's a less developed style of improvisation. If you transcribe what he's doing, you'll see he's aiming for different things than you're expecting. Notice how Glasper actually uses his ideas in his following solo. It's just different imo. I'm guessing you really enjoy improvisers like Clifford Brown, who I also love. Now, I'm a drummer, so grain of salt here. But listening to Terrace Martin solo makes me want to play off of him and listening to him with Ronald Bruner Jr., that's where he shines. The rhythmic interplay

Well... he has a less traditional approach. He tends fo fall less times in the strong beats like other players get to do it. He is also less diatonic than ypur average player and seeks for other ways more outta the box. Ain't saying this is better or worse, it's just his take, and his articulation is also more a'lla Lee Konitz or Joe Lovano in some moments where those eight notes are'nt played with standard jazz "triplet swing", but rather played like they would be played in a classical fashion with a evident accent on the second one but played like it is in reallity. It's just a matter of personal taste... I personally dig both takes. Cheers

@@juansecar2 I kind of disagree entirely. He seems really limited, to the point where I hear recurring licks used in almost every single solo. On Kendricks untitled unmastered, right before the track with Cee Lo on it, you can hear the riff with no background music. (Don''t remember the track #, I just listen to albums front to back) Some sort of bebop lick that is centered around a mM7 chord... It comes up in every solo. He constantly breaks momentum, to the point where the other players know this enough to bring the dynamic level down for him. It always escalates during Christian Scotts solo, because Christian Scott actually has put in the time and chops to make this happen. Terrace drops the ball every time. - which is understandable because he's invested more time in socializing and building community, and, more importantly, being a producer... and a kind of lousy keyboard player. If his efforts weren't so divided, maybe he would be able to shred more. Glasper on the other hand, Christian, Justin, all seem to show more dedication. Funny enough, Glasper is probably the 2nd best musician on that stage (Christian Scott appears to be the most dedicated musician in my opinion), but still managed to cultivate literally an entire community and movement around his music - but he's older than Terrace, and appears to be more confident and extroverted - which could have made the community building effortless all the while being truly dedicated to his instrument. Justin has a great sound, but it's definitely just another carbon copy of many drummers before him - I haven't heard anything new.

Terrace solo is the only one forcing everyone to listen. Improvising without a care in the world should be the standard.

Dont get me wrong the Terrace thing works great in a lot of contexts. Love his vocoder shit... and even his sax interjections. But i def feel like there isnt much to learn from his solos

"So you mean god will rise"..."I will rise". What is the DJ saying? Yiu guys go too far with this. Robert Glasper is, at best, fine. The band is ok. Thats what you are.
