Thanks for watching, Matt! I'm not 100% sure on the pulley bolt itself. The tensioner bolts are right hand thread, so yes, counter-clockwise to loosen. If you are only replacing the pulley, I _think_ the pulley bolt is also right hand threads.

thanks I like the zoom in on the three 10 mm bolts I wish you cold have shown more on the tension for the belt. where is the bolt? how much okay should the belt have?
@dwcoffey6 жыл бұрын
Hi Al, There isn't a bolt as such for the tension....there is just a square hole that accepts a ratchet or breaker bar. On the longest span of the belt, there should only be maybe 3/4" of play in either direction.

I don't expect a reply as this vid is 4 years old but I'll give it a shot anyway. I'm starting to have the issue you've describe on here with my 5.4L v8 in my 2004 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. Is it an inexpensive fix if I have a mechanical do it? I can do a little work on my truck and I have but this seems a bit complicated and I don't have the tools to take this on. Also I'm not able to remedy this right away as my wife is battling breast cancer and I'm the only one working so my funds aren't all together there. Would riding around with this issue for about 2-3 more months as I don't travel far for work (about 18 miles round trip) and I don't do much driving in between cause any damage or is just going to be this annoying sound that's all I have to endure? Hope to hear from you
@dwcoffey5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Dusty. I am sorry to hear about your wife, I'm praying for a full and speedy recovery for her. The situation with your Expedition depends on where the squeal is coming from. It could just be that you need a new belt....that's an easy fix and this video will show you how to do it, just be sure to follow the routing diagram under the hood of your car. If it is a pulley, like the pulley on the tensioner, that is making the noise, it will probably fail before too long. Usually when they fail, the bearing seizes, locks up the pulley, the engine will continue to drive the belt, so it will snap. Most of the time, the damage is limited to the pulley, but you'll be stranded wherever this happens. So....if I was in your situation, I'd try to determine where exactly the noise was coming from (be very careful when under the hood with the engine running that you don't let anything dangle into the fan or the belt) and go from there. If you are not comfortable or able to do that, then I'd get a shop to look at it. They will tell you whats wrong and give you a price, you can decide what to do from there. If they have to replace the belt and/or the tensioner, it should not be terribly expensive....I'd guess it'd be in the range of $150-$200 including parts.

I had trouble holding the piece in place and starting the first of three bolts. Mine has electric coils right on top of it. So I cut the head off of one of the three bolts and put the dowel piece in the center hole. Then when I lifted the tensioner into place, it had a home. Very eay to manage the two remaining bolts then. Im good with two out of three but if i had bought a longer bolt that was threaded all the way to the head, then I could have put a nut on that one for all three to be fastened to specs, easy as pie. Ford should have made that center one a stud. But they dont try to make it easy for us.

hello i need to change the pulley in my 5.4L V8, basically is the one big in the bottom, is metallic. look like a simple job, but i'd like to know if i need to take out also the fun or not, and in the mechanic they ask me $900 cause over 9.5hrs labor.... it is easy job or not?
@dwcoffey8 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrea, sounds like you are talking about changing the harmonic balancer. To change the harmonic balancer, you will need to remove the radiator and the fan/fan clutch. Then you need a puller for the harmonic balancer....not sure where you are in the world, but in the U.S., a person can rent these from the part store. Pull the balancer using the puller tool, then replace it. When you put the new one on, you'll want to thread up the bolt, tighten a little, then take a rubber mallet and tap all the way around to help it go on the shaft straight. Repeat that until it is fully seated. Good luck!
@AndreaCadelanoADVaccount8 жыл бұрын
Dennis Coffey oh, looks like not an easy job... so the pro intervent look necessary?
@AndreaCadelanoADVaccount8 жыл бұрын
Hello Dennis Coffey do you know if is normal if that the balance move a little when the engine run?
@dwcoffey8 жыл бұрын
Well, my friend, I can't answer that for you. It all depends on ow comfortable you are working on things. This job is harder than changing a belt or an alternator, for sure.
@dwcoffey8 жыл бұрын
The harmonic balancer should not move enough to be seen when the engine is running. If it is, most likely the rubber in the balancer is worn out and the balancer should probably be replaced.
