Hello! I love the machine and purchased one, only to get it set up and have an err31 code and seems the machine is ceased up, no movement and cant turn the wheel. Is there something im missing that I may need to do to get it going? I have others like this with no trouble. Its an awesome machine and would love some help:)

Hi there, I just got new large feed dogs and the corresponding needle plate for my singer 281-1, I’m hoping it will help me sew upholstery fabric more evenly when …especially when sewing cushions together… the needle plate is very tight! Should I try and smooth around the plate so there is a bit of play? Also now I have the large feed dogs in I have to lower them a bit, as they gouged up my cording foot…. What height should the feed dogs be at?

Hi David, please help. Feed dog runs backward. Had an issue with stitch length and think I over ran max setting. Now fixed that issue. Back Tack lever now works in reverse and machine sews backwards

Hey David 😃 love the videos, very informative for me! So I’ve been watching your videos from all the way over here in the uk and I’m wondering if you can help me out, because it sounds to me like you know your stuff. I have a juki ddl-8700 h and I use it to make bags and purses. Now, I want to start making garments.. clothing, underwear etc, but I think the machine might be too powerful for medium/lightweight fabrics. My question is, can I change the feed dogs and needle plate so that I will be able to use lighter weight fabrics? And if so, do you sell and ship to the uk..? Thanks for taking the time to read my comment x

I am not a sewing machine mechanic but an industrial sewing machine owner who broadens my knowledge through experiments with different foots, needles and feed dogs in my machine. In my opinion, all you have to do is change your needle size to industrial sewing machine needle size 90/14 depending on the materials you want to sew. I have a heavy duty industrial sewing machine that uses up to needle size 23. With needle size 21 in It which sews through multiple layers of denim, vinyl, pvc and leather, interfacing like its nothing, I tried sewing a cotton fabric knowing fully well that the needle was too big for it, I switched the thread to normal weight polyester thread and it sewed it perfectly. With that, I knew I had a go so I bought size 90/14 and 110/80 industrial sewing machine needles to sew normal to medium weight fabrics. Most times, its all about the needle, thread and presser foot despite the powerful motor. If I were you, I would only worry about the needle plate and feeddog if I wanted to switch to teflon presser foots as they work better with rubber/teflon feed dogs while improving the longevity of the teflon foots since normal steel/metal feed dogs scratch on them and reduce their lifespan. I hope this helped you anyhow. You can still contact your local sewing machine dealers/mechamics for further help if you are still in doubt. PS, you got yourself a really good industrial sewing machine. Enjoy.
