This awesome conversation might as well be happening today. I'm 72. Amazed. I was a drop out, did India, meditation centers, tea houses, farming, community living and lots of travel. Then I dropped in of sorts, family life and all, now I am a grandmother and a drop out once more, looking for my tribe. I'm ready to go living a very simple life, very close to nature with my soul brothers and sisters.

This talk so encapsulates the hippie culture of that time. It's interesting to see how this culture is having somewhat of a comeback in modern times, with some people choosing a lifestyle of homesteading, homeschooling, and questioning the validity of the institutions. Hopefully, the ball that got rolling in the hippie culture will ultimately transform society so we can have a better world.

I was very fortunate to attend a school that was forward thinking. We could learn to sew and cook, and our lessons were more about talking than copying from the blackboard also we would have debates on all manner of subjects. When we reached 13 years of age, we had the choice to change the curriculum to whatever we excelled in, concentrating on that while doing only the lessons required by law. So if you excelled in music most of your time would be working on, say, your instrument of choice. They would even hire a teacher just for you if you were the only one in your class. It was a most amazing time for me. Great video 👍 ❤ Groove on ✌️

This is a Truly prophetic conversation of what was about to happen. Amazing conversation seeding a shift in Collective Consciousness we Now see in crescendo of accelerating momentum! I've always known its through raising consciousness we can create lasting possibility of change in the destructive trajectory of humankind. We are Now in it & it must have been extraordinary when these guys saw the wave of Awakening that happened only 2 yrs later in summer of '69! Summer of Love❤❤

Amazing conversation, as well as amusing & fun! I was 14yrs old in 1967 & just becoming conscious how fucked up I was from extensive abuse & trauma &conditioning I went through as child & beginning to wonder if there was way of healing, before there was the Awareness & Abundance of resources there are today. My whole life has been about finding my way through the Maze & Labyrinth of confusion, illusions, delusions of not only my own conditioning, but of the collective conditioning of culture & world around me. Loving this conversation! Would be worthy of publishing in book.

Awesome gathering of brilliant minds of several 'influencers' of The 60's Great Awakening that is the ground our current collective Awakening stands on. Thankyou so much Mark for continuing to make sure your father's brilliant life work of exploring & giving a generation language for discussing, reflecting upon, integrating initial experiences of Higher Consciousness that so many of us were experiencing in the 60's & 70's. He was the first person who gave language to the extraordinary, profound experience of Union with Source of Life Encompassing all, Within All, as well as Beyond All tha I experienced in 1972 & is very much like what St. Augustine described of his own Mystical experience of 'God'~ 'God is a circle whose center is everywhere & Its circumference is nowhere'. Love this gathering! So appreciate experiencing roots of our current organic, collective Awakening!❤❤😂

No pervs necessary. Ram dass was nothing but a perv and a charletain of the worst kind. "Wanna come up and see my holy pictures_" or how about Maha raji could read my mind! And took 1200 mcg of LSD and nothing happened.. how do you attest to what someone else experienced on LSD? And how much more when you personally worship the man. Yes a man who took advantage of silly white boys and girls. They would tell him things and he would use very old cold reading skills to pull the wool. I'm so sick of ramen noodle das it makes me sick.

I like how Allen Ginsberg and Gary Sneider end up being the wise elders here. I often wonder how actual people of China reacted, or would have reacted, to Alan Watts's generalizations about Chinese and Asian thought. His wisdom and personality still inspire, even if at times he did project his own outlook and ways of seeing onto the whole "Asian mind." So, how accurate were Watts's generalizations about "East" and "West"? This is not a rhetorical question but a direct and serious one that I think is worth trying to answer. I feel l'd need in-depth knowledge and immersion in multiple Asian cultures to answer it, but I think I've had enough exposure to different schools of Indian and Chinese philosophy to safely say that there's lots of divergence and complexity that Watts sweeps under the rug at times. Still, Watts brilliantly communicated certain ways of thinking and experiencing that are "other" to the everyday default modes that most of us use, habitually and unconsciously, in everyday life today.

That’s interesting to think about. I would imagine that one will face significant shortcomings in the accuracy of their interpretations of bodies of text if they do not have fluency in the authors language.

Asian languages like Thai and Chinese are rich in culturally specific idioms, of which are impossible to interpret without bilingual local to communicate with. To Alan’s credit, he does make it a point to elaborate on his interesting social network of other other nationalities of other faiths, this would offer a locals perspective on their philosophy.

Going into a Wattsian mode of thinking: we could find fault with any attempt at explaining the nature of reality, such as the belief we had found the deepest layer of the universe when we found the atom, only to realize the layers were so much deeper the sharper our minds become. Just like the ducks have no mind to be aware of their image, and so the water does not carry their reflection. What I mean by this is that his statements on Asian culture were of a certain layer or depth of their culture - or the revelation of the atom. But of course the discussion of the atom like the discussion on one layer of a culture misses out on another scale of reality.

["I often wonder how actual people of China reacted, or would have reacted, to Alan Watts's generalizations about Chinese and Asian thought."] Well, Asian people are like normal, everyday people. Different Chinese people will tell you different things about their 'cultural thought.' They make generalizations about their Asian philosophies. This is because, like in the West, there are still lots of people who walk around immersed in maya.

I suppose you're right. But I think that was part of his succes. To bring this kind of knowledge to the masses you must use this generalizations if you want it to get across. Even if not entirely accurate, it still reaches more souls than a precise message would.

This was wonderful! The whole time I was thinking what Alan Watts finally mentions toward the end: Higher level consciousness. Love Alan, he's the closest to higher level consciousness. (Because HE gets non-duality. And several times he tries to guide the others toward this middle way.) But the rest remind me of stoners and the adderall-fueled tiktok-ers who think they know more than they really do. Clearly they're a product of their generation. It's hard to be truly conscious when your whole life women were kept in the background the same way men kept their emotional needs in the background of their consciousness. (Like I've learned from Alan, it makes you IGNORE-ant.) So in the same way, it's kinda hard to design a good/just/beautiful/practical world when the only ones talking about it are men. And trust me, I get that intellectual, self-actualized, conscious women were probably hard to come by in their time... so it makes sense they didn't include a woman in their discussion. But y'all's! We're half the population! You have to at least consider women's perspectives while redesigning your utopia! They had me cracking up with their serious discussion of group marraige! When everyone knows women tend to prefer monogamous relationships. Psychology/biology is important! Women think/prefer/need differently than men. A win-win situation needs to find this middle way.

Cool. I always try and live from my heart first. Not always successful, because the mind wants to be in charge, and that's what our current western culture assumes, but my best decisions come from my center, or heart.

Through the eye of the 🍄 I hear you. Through it's senses I leave alone and allow all to be. The eye not moved shows the act. Move or manipulate the eye and see nothing but ego. Ego moves the eye around and asks what's going on? I've completely lost myself.. It becomes a seeker of nothing but self.. it confuses further by latching onto all methods and claims to be skilled and educated in this field! Missing the obvious fact that all others see, it's trapped itself... And it blames others for it's downfall.. Yet refuses to wear glasses to see. Refuses words of wisdom that'll place a mirror in front of self.. it's now a destroyer of all it faces. If allowed it's that which pushes the war button before the other does.. Not realizing it's created an illusion of enemy and then destroyed it.. Now it becomes a split self, usurper of all that shows itself to itself. Now the truth it fears, good is to be feared.. it causes a mirror effect all can see. You run around chopping heads to your own self... You've devoured yourself from the inside out.. And not one soul is there but you... It's all absolutely beautiful, not a grain of sand out of place. Things move freely without your human permission. You now call this the Mandela effect... No, it's simply something u don't understand but try to kling onto creating suffering. Allow things to be as you maneuver throughout the known realm... Once learned you may freely move to and fro as light being, or solid in appearance.. You may also go to void for nutrition. Be wise with your energy, it's not an endless supply. This realm is exhausting and extremely taxing on the system. The government is fine, they can't change things if they wanted.. that too is an illusion they use to keep u in place.. your tools will be used against you and nothing more.. it's about you.. No country or god cares about this little illusion of a realm.. all from same source. So stop the attachments. Stop doing... Relax and grow now... We need intelligence not mirrors.... It's not easy to get one true seeker of knowledge per reset . Only one moves on and it's not you so relax.. stop reaching for things not yours and are illusionary. Good luck to you all. I'll return B4 flood and fire to say goodbye... It will be tomorrow for me, soon to you.. only a few will see the change... It's occuring right now.. continental shifting, and a new foundation... Will rise from the ashes by being dug out upon suns return to this sector. Moon is the map. U know if 20%,the realm is well beyond your comprehension. So leave it alone and sow seeds.
