This was really helpful, thanks for posting. I'm currently on my 4th alternator! Every one does not charge after fitting, unless I don't connect the single pin exciter wire, then I get a steady 14v. A very frustrating mystery so far.

If you disconnect = 14v but when you turn off the engine does the battery then discharge ?

@@stevenharpervw the battery holds a charge fine. 12.6v after sitting for a week. If you start the car with the exciter wire connected the charge doesn't rise above 12.8v. If you disconnect the wire it then rises to 14.2 and stays there under load, so the alternator is fine. If you then connect the exciter wire with the engine running it stays at 14v until the engine is turned off, and then back to square 1 next time the engine is started, with 12.8v until the exciter wire is pulled. Voltage from the exciter wire when the engine is running is a steady 12 volts. Local auto electrician recokns it could just be the wrong alternator for this car, even though it fits fine and was ordered through a local motor factors after cross referencing the registration. Can't explain it.

@alistairmscott so can you drive the car as normal with wire permanently removed ? Now I was told the 207 and the 308 cars share the same alternator up to a certain year and after that, there are can-bus or a digital signal or some witch craft, controlling them, so maybe you have that one ? Which does kind of make sense

@@stevenharpervw the cooling fan is on permanently with the exciter wire disconnected, which is a quirk of any kind of charging circuit fault apparently and I'm told eventually the car will throw up a fault code, but the battery light and EML light stay off and the alternator puts out at steady 14.2v, so no reason why it can't be driven. Yes, from what I am told this is a smart alternator controlled through the ECU, and the only way to guarantee compatibility is to go through Peugeot and order one matched to the VIN number for 700 quid. Or I could keep ordering cheapo patent ones until I get one that works. On the plus side, I'm down to 25 minutes now getting the alternator off. If there was an issue with the supply voltage from the exciter wire then I could look into that, but that seems fine. It really does just seem like the car is fussy with what alternator it wants.

@@alistairmscott wow, I guess you could use eBay or go directly to a breakers yard and buy an alternator . Or maybe best thing is go get a car scanner tool and scan the car . But damn that sounds like one heck of a problem . Can’t beat the older cars for just having basic parts . I’m impressed you can get the alternator now out in 25 minutes . I hated those stupid bolts to undo

If you turn the alernator so the idle get towards the engine it is easier to take out and put back the alternator.

Loads of swearing? I think the alternator goes in at an angle and the belt goes on with it or I just flicked it on over the idlers at the end. I have forgotten as it was a few years ago

Dlatego jest montowany pasek wielorowkowy elastyczny.Do zdjęcia i montażu paska stosuje się odpowiednie kliny zakładając je na kole pasowym wału . Kręcąc kołem za pomocą klucza pasek można zdjąć lub nałożyć.Kliny nie są drogie i można je zakupić przez internet.Proponuję zakup aluminiowych. Bardzo dobrze się sprawdzają.Wykonane z tworzywa nie spełniają swojej roli. Osobiście robiłem to pod chmurką i na minusie przy awarii sprzęgiełka alternatora więc dasz radę.Trochę cierpliwości.

hey brother plz reply back , i am having ford fiesta diesel , whenever i start the car battery warning light comes on the dash but if i revv the car till 4k rpm it disappears , and wont come back till i turn off the car , what is the issue

@@motologist1917 It’s just a guess. I think the 207 and the 308 alternators are the same but after a change over year the alternator exciter wire is controlled over canbus so may it’s the same with yours and there is some communication problem. It is strange that it does work but only if it goes over 4K rpm
