I am an athiest and so is my girlfriend but we are having mormon missionaries over this monday for a bbq. Not really agreeing on parts but other parts yes. But they are nice and i treat others how i want to be treated. So i heard them out and am having them back.

Thank you for feeding the missionaries. I joined the Church almost 37 years ago at age 24. Life is not easy, but making covenants with a loving God is worth it. I know that Jesus Christ lives and He is the Son of God and our Redeemer. It's mind-boggling sometimes that suffering is allowed by God's plan, but there is a reason (read 2 Nephi, Chapter 2). Happy New Year 2023, God loves you, knows you and every single person on earth. Amazing. He will be an absolutely fair judge. God bless you.

I love the creativity of the Lord he gathers his children one by one and in such specific and individualized ways. JP helped me realized I needed to start "telling the truth" better I hadn't realized how cowardice i'd been. Just ran across this podcast and wanted to make a comment. In life, anytime we look for reasons to doubt God or doubt his church we will find them. I focus on looking for truths and knowledge of Christ to gain a relationship with Him. I can find no other faith with as much truth as the LDS church and in fact find more wrong elsewhere in theologies. The more I learn about the Prophet Joseph Smith as fallible as people try to paint the man that may have been, the more convinced I am of his calling was to restore the gospel oJesus Christ and plan of salvation to all people.

I absolutely love this video. When I was doubting the church, I found some atheist stuff. I noticed how I felt when I heard what these particular atheists were saying. It felt dark and unhappy. I know that when I focus on the doctrines I love about the church, I feel so much joy, like you were saying, Peregrine. I like how articulately you talk about these subjects. It's easy to understand when you talk. Thank you so much for sharing your story and your paradigm shift. I think thinking like this will help me when I'm a missionary to connect with atheists and other people I will teach. :)

@Dan Hoen I think you are wrong on this. I felt this dark feeling the entire time I was an atheist. I felt it every time I watched an atheist video. I felt like "yeah this is true, I'm fighting authority by feeling this way, yeah I don't need to care about my pornography addiction etc etc." But at the end of the day I found myself depressed and angry. It is not a momentary or temporary thing. At least it wasn't for me. Atheism is a depressing, nihilistic and empty worldview that never gets better.

Peregrine mentions taking 4 months of teaching before his conversion. How long do missionaries typically spend teaching someone? I guess I’m wondering how much time do the missionaries invest in one individual. Four months seems like quite a bit of dedication. How frequently do they meet? I’m sure this varies a ton, but just curious if there’s a general time frame.

It really depends. My wife investigated for over a year. My father was an investigator for over five years. My Scoutmaster from when I was a kid took 20. From my experience as a missionary, 3-5 months is about normal. Some people are faster than others. The quickest I've seen is about two weeks.

LDS Peregrine, your perspective is very interesting. it would be great to have an atheist that used to be Mormon on your channel to gain a better idea of why Mormons leave Mormonism and then are not convinced in the God of Mormonism (let’s call it AMormonism - a form of atheism). ​@@dryzelph7838 I was born into Mormonism. I took it seriously. I've studied it for most of my life and I know Mormon theology better than most. In preparation for serving a mission in Texas, I studied other religions online and compared them to my own. That's when I first encountered real criticisms about the church. It was then when I realized that my faith was invincible. I searched, but no one could prove for absolute certain that the Church's doctrines were false (In other words, I shifted the burden of proof). I could answer any objection to church doctrine with a skepticism. I considered any source of evidence to be less trustworthy than the intuitive communication I felt with God. Since no one could possibly prove that my spiritual experiences weren't what I believed them to be, I knew that God was real. After serving a mission I continued to learn about other religions. I watched a youtube channel that was critical of Jahova's Witness called Telltale (kzbin.info/door/gIi12EA6BQ8HKL8QUccsOQ). This allowed me to see the harm that could be done by a religion similar to my own without my guard going up. I allowed myself to be critical of that religion before realizing mine had similar flaws. In college, I learned formal logic and proper epistemology. I became familiar with the scientific process. My statistics professor suggested that I read "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable" I learned some of the logical pitfalls that we all fall into more often than most of us realize. This education gave me the tools to see my own errors. Scientific epistemology is like an Egyptian pyramid. It is best to have a wide base of evidence from diverse sources to support an overarching theory (the tip of the pyramid). Mormonism's epistemic pyramid is built upside down. The entire weight of the religion rests on a single point: your own personal revelation experiences. As soon as I found that I did not have sufficient evidence to believe my emotions were messages from God, all of my other beliefs toppled quickly. Put briefly, the experiment described in Alma 32 is unfalsifiable therefore it can't be used to prove actual communication with God. I have a lot to say about this but this is already a long post. Losing faith was hard. I was no longer allowed in the temple, which was a dealbreaker for my girlfriend. We were talking about getting married by last summer. But she wanted a temple marriage and that wouldn't be possible with someone who no longer believes. I can't officially leave the church because I'm enrolled at BYU Idaho. I'm required to attend church every Sunday or else I'll be expelled. I've considered transferring to finish my degree elsewhere but I've already done a lot of classes here and a learning disability makes it difficult for me to change environments. I still have a good relationship with my family (they all still believe), but I feel isolated socially.

This happened for me too! I grew up in the church and was an athiest in 2015 for about 3 months, and I had a spiritual experience that changed my life and brought me back to the church. After experiencing athiesm, I will NEVER EVER go back! I honestly don’t understand why Athiests say the more they read the Bible the less they know it to be true because the more I read my Bible the MORE I know it to be true! They use the Old Testament as an excuse to reject God and the fact that Jesus told his disciples their generation won’t pass away until the son of man returns. Did it ever occur to them that Gods definition of a generation is different from ours? Maybe Jesus didn’t mean their specific generation. Maybe he meant the end times? As our church teaches, the Bible is true but mistranslated so much of what it says may be incorrect. The Book of Mormon though, as well as Islam saves many Athiests from athiesm. I consider myself a born again Christian and after the things I have experienced and witnessed and seen, I’ll never go back to athiesm again. Once you experience something like that, you can’t deny it. They can explain it away with logic and science all they want but with unexplained events, they always accuse people of lying even when another person confirms information they can’t possibly know. My best friend once had an NDE and was told information about a nurse and she did not overhear it, she was brain dead and the nurse was an athiest claiming the information my friend said, she couldn’t possibly have known. The nurse burst out in tears and dropped her tray of meds because she was in shock my friend knew the nurses information. The nurse asked her “how did you know that? Only I know that information. I have never told anyone” and my bestie said God told her. The other athiest doctors accused the nurse of lying and the nurse told them in tears no she’s telling the truth but they refused to believe her. Nobody ever believed me about my spiritual experiences either due to my false memory disorder but I didn’t have that disorder at the time these events occurred and I had told my best friend about it at the time it happened so I know my memories of it are 100% legit. My godmother had similar experiences but her dumb ass doctors convinced her Christianity was a delusion and that NDE’s were mental illness and now she denies that she ever told me about it to make me look crazy. I don’t care if anyone believes me or not because I know in my heart God exists. As far as Jesus telling his disciples they won’t pass away until the son of man returns, that I can’t explain. No idea what Jesus meant by that and that may be a mistranslation but either way I’m a believer and always will be. If I’m wrong hey I go into outer darkness because nothing is there but if I’m right and God is real, I’m saved so nothing to lose, nothing to gain for me 💗 I get bullied by Athiests online on a daily basis but I pray for them. No sense in arguing with those people because their hearts and minds are blinded by the world.

For me was through writing/poetry and the response I received to my prayers on is Joseph Smith a profit. 2 times I wrote a poem. I go to to Bible/B.O.M. and post a poem. Sometimes just the version the day. Both times I prayed, wrote a poem and the B.O.M. verse was almost exactly about the same. Like a light came on. And said to God ok I get the messages

I'm glad you found value in Jordan Petersen. I'm concerned that he has such appeal, because while he certainly has a lot of good advice in the self-help/mythic worldview department, he also comes inseparably linked with his diet-racism, low key misogyny, and pushes the pretty anti-semitic "cultural marxism" conspiracy theory, among other problems. There has to be some way to extricate the good from the bad, but it seems like a "poop in the brownie mix" type thing. I'd rather people learn from the sources Petersen is citing (Mostly Jung, Joseph Campbell, etc.) and just take a psych 101 class than keep his radioactive elements in their worldview. I dunno.

I would just disagree with you there. I've never heard him make a racist argument, (or diet racist as you say), and he never makes mysoginistic points either. He pushes back against far left conspiracy theories like the patriarchy and white privilege. I can understand if you disagree with him on that, but I don't know how you can understand and agree with his mythological points AND the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints doctrine and still believe in things like western patriarchy and modern day white privilege. Well I can't find the part of the video you're referencing so I'll just say this: I think that most people when they hear our doctrine even if they don't think it's literally true, there is something about it that seems transcendent and impressive. I think I said in the video that while church history can sometime throw people off, the doctrine itself glows, or something like that.

It is, but not because you think. It's because the Holy Ghost confirms the truth of it to you. Much quicker.

He says he was asking for a sign from God his entire life, and it finally happens that a particular song in shuffle plays? The laws of probability are such that eventually something "improbable" (aka low probability) will eventually happen, that needn't mean it's a sign from God/miracle. If you spend much of your life asking for a sign, eventually something is bound to happen that could be interpreted as such. Also, shuffle often uses an algorithm and isn't completely random. Was just googling the subject and read,for example, that some people have the issue of initially have shuffle play the songs in the same order until they turn it off and restart it. Perhaps he put the two songs in his playlist back to back because the religious subject matter or what not. As of the time in the video when I'm writing this comment (halfway through the video thus far) I don't believe he mentions which source he was using to playlist his music - spotify etc, which would be nice because I think it's relevant here. Also, just because intuition exists doesn't mean A god/gods exist.

I never suggested that the song coming on was the miracle, the miracle was that I predicted what song it would be through a prompting from the Holy Ghost. You can minimise all you want it will not change the fact it happened to me. You can insult my intelligence all you want it wont change the fact you are wrong.

This was interesting, a great listen. I’m an active temple attending and happily sealed member. I’m losing my faith in God, I only have hope, but not belief in a God. I only listen to Faith promoting content now after going down the anti-lds and other anti-god messages for a time. The majority of my sibling, in-laws, former lds friends have all left the church (some because they see Nelson as a fallen prophet due to his COVID shot lunacy, others due to the church waffling on or even outright supporting/white flagging the rainbow mafia). I hold on though. This type of content helps. God either exists or we’re just a bunch of useless and meaningless organisms trying to make a buck and eat. What a waste if that were true…

A bit of coincidence that he converted to the Lds religion and then got married shortly after. It seems to me that he was influenced from outside sources like a girl haha. It seems like a conversion to lds from emotional arguments and pseudo intellectual arguments were the reasons for his “conversion.” I hope he had a sincere conversion. A relationship with Christ is first and he really never dwells with that instead he uses other people’s experiences to justify his reasoning to convert. He seems to seek the approval of men rather than God. Galatians 1:10. People use emotional reasons to convince themselves and use logic and reasoning to justify it. For example a song.If you convert because of a feeling from the Book of Mormon. A honest person would say “that is not a strong argument,” I myself could read the Quran and say “that my personal experience with the book has convinced me that Islam is the one true religion.” I think most Mormons would say that’s a bad reason to convert. The image of Christ carrying the cross is powerful but many Churches have this concept so what makes the Lds religion distinct from other churches? Also the doctrines that church has are nice and beautiful but is it true? Is that what the Lord Jesus Christ teaches? Or does that come from men with new ideas starting back to the 15th century. Also make sure to pay your tithing (10%) bro or not temple ceremonies for you. I appreciate his vulnerability. I recommend y”all reading the conversion story of St. Augustine. The book is called “Confessions.” He converted from a pagan religion to Christianity.
