Your spark plugs are what supply the spark that ignites the air/fuel mixture in the engine which basically allows the combustion in the engine to take place in order for the engine to run.

Coil pack (along with other electronics controlled by the ECU) converts 12V from the battery into about 40 000 volts to make the spark at the spark plugs - older cars (until late 1990s) had just one big coil with a distributor and contact breakers, a mechanical assembly that spun round in time with the engine to open and close the low voltage circuit to the coil and create the high voltage to make the sparks - all these bits also needed regular maintenance as well as having to replacing spark plugs..

So in simple terms you have the 4 stroke cycle. The SPARK PLUG is pretty important in all this in a petrol engine. On the 3rd Stroke, power, it forces the Piston back down after igniting the air fuel mixture and causes mechanical work to be done by changing the reciprocating motion of the piston to a rotating motion of the Crankshaft. This Crankshaft is also attached to the input shaft of you’re gearbox and this goes via your differential gears to a pair of driveshafts. These driveshafts come out the gearbox and go into the hub (which) your wheels are bolted onto :)

The spark plug ignites the fuel causing a explosion in the cylinder causing the piston to go back down to make power. Look ok Google for FOUR STROKE CYCLE. Induction, compression, power, exhaust. Or sick squeeze bang blow. It’s interesting so You actually see how Your engine works. Also look up the firing order. On most inline 4 engines it’s 1,3,4,2. Have a look it’s cool.

Ordinary copper and nickel spark plugs should be changed every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, unless otherwise suggested by the spark plug manufacturer. Platinum and iridium spark plugs tend to last longer than standard copper and nickel spark plugs. Expect to change them every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.
