*IMPORTANT!: IF YOUR SPARK PLUG BROKE INSIDE OF YOUR ENGINE, READ THIS!* So, the other day I changed my spark plugs, and as I went to remove one, it broke, leaving the metal threads in the head of my engine, while the ceramic portion came out. So, if this happens, try this first before you have a mechanic take the head off to remove the hollow shell of the theads. 1. Get a #5 size "easy-out" screw extractor bit. These are used for removing screws with stripped heads. 2. Attach your 10 inch extension to your 3/8in ratchet. 3. Get a 7/16in size, 3/8in drive, star socket, and turn it *backwards* so the star portion is on the end of the extension. It should fit, but wont be snug. 4. Insert the square end of the screw extractor bit into the square hole in the 7/16in star socket. 5. VERY slowly, screw the extractor counter-clockwise (to the left) into the inside of the shell of the spark plug. As the screw extractor bites into the inside of the broken spark plug, it will slowly unscrew it as well, saving you potentially hundreds or thousands of dollars by not having to take it to a mechanic. I had to do this on my 2011 INFINITI G37x and it came out fine. Just MAKE SURE you unscrew it VERY slowly and you wont have a problem. Use a long skinny magnet to remove it from the inside of the engine. *Please upvote this as it could help people in a bad situation save some money!*

@BiggMo6 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix - If the ceramic insulator came out whole you have an opening above the cylinder. EZ-outs can create small metal shavings and you risk them falling in. In wouldn’t recommend this in a hard to reach plug where you can’t watch for this.

Auto Zone sold me more expensive plugs (iridium) last year and my car has only run worse. Went to Rock Auto and bought the OE Manufacturer plugs (copper and 80% cheaper. $2 vs $10) and now my car runs so much better than those more expensive ones. I'd much rather swap my plugs out every 30k miles than the car run like crap for 60k+ miles. I always come back here for a refresher course on how to swap them out. Thanks again Chris.
@Bound2BeatUАй бұрын
Yea he’s not necessarily correct about upgrading what he missed out on was that harder material plugs run colder which means it is harder for them to spark and they generate less heat on them. Most regular cars need easy spark as their fuel ratio is not super lean or rich so they will run better with average plugs and you won’t over heat them but also won’t struggle to spark. These colder plugs iridium especially are designed for harder use for tuned/higher powered cars because the car is burning fuel hotter and stronger which also prevents overheating because the plugs won’t spark as easily. Higher performance cars can actually melt copper plugs if the fuel is really rich or it’s running hard. This is still an amazing video tho just keep this in mind.

Thanks! Sorry it can’t be more, I’m trying to, keyword is trying, lol, fix my 05 Camry from when one day out of the blue she would crank a couple times and then start and then got to the point where she would keep cranking but no start and after a list of changing things from spark plugs to I’ll put the list down below nothing has really changed because of an issue I think I have and your channel has been a huge help but now I’ve run into a big problem. My head is most likely blown 😢. I can’t afford a used engine but I don’t want to give this car up it’s sentimental through family, still has so much good to it but that issue. I put a new spark plugs new valve cover gasket new battery new alternator about a year ago I put a brand new radiator in couple hoses new thermostat but of course my went to go fill the coolant in the new radiator. I went to go top it off with the car running, and it just kept bubbling and bubbling and bubbling and so did the reservoir once that was capped and the smoke blowing out of the back of the exhaust, you know the story With those anyway I don’t know what it being an aluminum lock if it’s totally gone and I have to either scrap or get it used engine which are 1500 here which I would love to do or if there’s someway I can fix the gasket Idk. I have 700 or less to my name all the time due to being a single parent with no break to add financial linkage. Without a vehicle where I live in the woods and where no buses are and Ubers are super expensive and hard to find it is really going to be hard to get around to get my kid to school or her activities or her tutoring that she needs. I’m really at a loss can you please give me some guidance ?

You have become one of my favorite youtubers because of your videos. I haven't seen many, only ones that are relevant at the time I need them, but you have been so incredibly helpful. Teach REAL helpful information and not the dumb stuff schools think are relevant. Knowing how to manage finances, knowing how to maintain your vehicle and work on it, and how to cook and clean among other daily life necessities should be mandatory. Things that I thought would be difficult to do on my car are surprisingly easy. You don't just show us how to do things but you are so thorough in teaching how, why, and when. You explain what everything does when it's relevant to the video, in this case the plugs and wires, what they do, how they are made aka the anatomy of the pieces, how to use certain tools for the job, when this should be done, how to find the information that's relevant to our specific vehicle, different options, in parts, etc. Thank you!

ChrisFix I already know how to replace the spark plugs and my wires in my Dodge Ram 1500 but I decided to watch this video anyway because you’re awesome! Keep up the good work!

Thanks! Did you learn anything new or pick up any tips?
@deathvalley0066 жыл бұрын
ChrisFix yes I did! I learned to not mess up the platinum on the plugs because my truck uses platinum spark plugs, and I did everything with no problem. The wires and plugs in my truck before replacing were original and they are still good so I have some spare parts to use if something happens down the road.

Good video for beginners. Nice work. Here's a couple things you missed. There are many more differences in plugs than discussed. The cutaway plug you show is a resister plug which has a gap in the core electrode inside the porcelain. This forces the coil charge to jump the gap, greatly increasing the voltage that reaches your combustion chamber. The other would be a non-resistor which has a solid copper core and no internal gap to jump. Also the diff between taper seat and crush washer plugs and the procedure for torquing them down. Anti-seize can cause a misfire on new plugs if you get any on the center or tip porcelain. Your spark will follow it to ground instead of firing. Anti-seize is highly conductive, unlike iridium which has very poor electrical conductivity compared to copper, platinum, steel, aluminum, carbon and especially silver (like Nology plugs). Have a great day!

The details you explain are so informative . I can hardly express my appreciation. Most people wouldn't bother and most manufactures just say every plug they sell is the best. As the saying goes, 'the devil is in the details'. When you say to do something or not, you explain WHY. To me, that means a LOT !

@@robertbridgman1451 they are notoriuos for breaking, especially if u waited the 140k miles that ford recommends. Ford will also have you sign a waover that if they break a plug, you pay labor to gave them fix at about $1k. Do thwm much sooner, use plenty of penetrant first, let it soak good, take you time, dont crank it out or it will break. When replacing use anti seaze for mext time.

One of the first things I ever learned how to fix on a car was replacing the spark plugs. It's generally not a very hard job for a beginner, and yet it's still complicated enough to make someone trying to learn how to fix their cars feel like they really accomplished and learned something...

I run NGK Iridium plugs in my car and it has helped with fuel economy on my car. But I do replace them roughly every 40k miles. I use to run E85 in my car when I lived in Florida and it wears out spark plugs a lot quicker.
