I love this video! Not only have you shown me the pickups I'm currently shopping for, but you're also so encouraging in terms of doing your own repairs. I've just made the decision to learn to solder also so I can do these kinds of mods. It was cool to watch you do the whole process and get some tips along the way. Thank you!

That’s great to know. I started soldering during the pandemic and I love it.

Glad someone made this video - everyone says the stock pickups suck but very few people have posted results of changing them.

Great video! I just switched out my Ultra pickups and your walkthru was very helpful. The mud and dull tone is gone! Thanks again.

I like them too. A little tweaking of the amp, and a little Boss CX1 compression really brought them to life

Thanks for the help, I liked and subscribed. I bought a new JM but I think I need to change the pickups to make it a guitar I really love, will see.

helped me out a ton thank you man. huge. sidenote: imo makes more sense to take off the strings. otherwise we put unnecessary wear on the tremolo screw holes when we unscrew it and rescrew it back in.

Thanks for the pup switch demo.These ULTRA Jazzmasters are such excellent guitars! The noiseless jazzmaster pickups are underrated, in my opinion. I don't find them muddy - They sound tight and articulate in bass tone to my ears. They are quieter, with a less pronounced treble tone - I think some people perceive this as "dull", and I can understand that especially if they are used to a more vintage jazzmaster tone. A well adjusted Boss cx1 compressor brought out the treble and spank of the pickups nicely, and I find them very useable With that being said, I'm going to experiment, and put in some Fender CuNiFe/Cobalt Chrome pups and see what different sounds can be had. Maybe changing out the 250k S-1 with a 500k S-1 would bring a little more sparkle to the tone ? Thanks once again for the demo.

Just a couple of things. You don't need to take the trem off to have the job done. When passing to single coils, you should stick copper foil inside the cavities and on the back of your scratchplate. That's for sure!
@BuddaGuedes
@BuddaGuedes Жыл бұрын
How would you change the pickups then?
@sintakta
@sintakta Жыл бұрын
@@BuddaGuedes there are a few videos by Puisheen where you fan see everything. He seems to be the Jazzmaster guru, you will lern a lot on his channel. But you must have noticed you don't need to take the trem off to change the pickups, it's on another part of the wood, away from there. Like if I had to take the Bigsby off my Gretsch to install my TV Jones classic...nonsense. And you must stick copper foil inside. Anyway, Puisheen will show detailed infos. Just a question... why did you leave the tuners on? 🥳😁🎸👋🏻

@@sintakta The advantage of taking the trem off, is that you don't have to restring after the mod. It's only 6 screws more... Maybe not ideal for the strings, but that's another thing.

Hi I just bought a Jazzmaster Lollar P90 and a regular Lollar JM pup for my Jazzmaster Ultra and found out they're Reverse Wind / Reverse Polarity so is that a problem with the wiring on these guitars?? Does it just reverse the phase switch?? Thanks

@bradthomas4923

@@BuddaGuedes sometimes matched sets come RW/RP, reverse wound / reverse polarity to cancel hum when both pups are on (middle switch position). Lollar said it couple be an issue with the phase switch in the JM Ultras. Nevermind if you don’t I understand the question. No worries.

I also own an Ultra JM model- initially I liked the sound available stock, but in comparison to every other guitar (JMs, SCs, HBs guitars) I owned the pickups sounded lifeless; just dull. I then was (kinda) dumb and bought some noiseless Kinman JM Fat/Surf pickups (super nice- but expensive) thinking that would be an improvement...they sounded better, but everything was dull sounded still! I then switched out the entire harness for a standard JM and low and behold- the Kinman's came to life. Something tells me that either the pots or that rat's nest wiring in the Ultra JM is sucking the life out of ANY pickups in there; I have yet to go down the rabbit hole further.....maybe I should, because the tonal options in the stock Ultra arrangement were super cool- just strangled somewhere in the line. Maybe pots?

hmm iDK about the ultra noiseless Pups but Kinmans are so far the only noiseless JM pickup that actually sound like a JM - exactly. Others are a nice try, But I wouldn't dismiss noiseless out of hand - Noiseless is surely a worthy goal at least, even if few builders actually realize it.
