NASA cut the funding for the project. NASA's sweetheart JPL was working on a similar satellite called NEOcam, which will launch in 2021. Three other unrelated satellites with the Sentinel name have launched.

That's the thing. It doesn't have to be that large to wipe us out. You got your mass. Then you got your velocity. (A very small bullet can ruin a human body's whole day.)

Whilst I applaud the idea and effort, I can only assume either he missed a zero off those figures, or the announcement caused a rush by more official agencies to get birds in the air doing the same job. Last I looked into it, at the start of this year, there were nearly 500,000 known solar system objects, very nearly all of which would class as asteroids (planets + dwarf planets + moons + comets + man made satellites count for less than 10,000). The detection rate of which has been steadily increasing since the 1980s, but still easily 200,000 of which would have been known about in 2012. There are also at least three other similar missions currently operating, and going by how many discoveries have been credited to them, they're either operating at a rate greater than 10,000 a month, or have been on-mission for more than six years. Still a shame that this got cancelled however. That extra 10k detections, even if they merely confirmed the sightings of the other missions with additional data to help better pin down the trajectories of known objects, would have been extremely useful :-/

Wow, and as soon as we have the data collected, we can use it to deflect asteroids onto other countries. that will happen with this research before a single asteroid will be defected to protect earth.
@boots4yew
@boots4yew 10 жыл бұрын
I'm no astronomer but just at a guess, I'd think that deflecting asteroids to entirely miss the Earth would be far easier than trying to aim one precisely at any particular location on Earth since the asteroid maneuvering would have to be done years in advance.

Do you reckon that there could be an asteroid out there, as big, or bigger, than the earth? And could potentially wipe out all life on earth, on impact?
@1DwtEaUn
@1DwtEaUn 6 жыл бұрын
Would not take anything near that large to wipe out all life, gotta keep in mind kinetic energy goes up cubed in relation to speed. So something coming in at 24,000 MPH+ packs a lot of kinetic energy compared to its relative (to earth) mass. Now completely destroying the earth into asteroids or a collection of moons would take a lot more mass than ending all life, one estimate of the former was needing something with approx. 60% earth mass.

YUP!! Add a humungeous Thank You from me, but also for my kids(both in early 20's) and hopefully my upcoming grand and great-grand children, etc. etc.. Concidering the damage another 1908 size crash alone would have on any country today, let alone one like the dinosaur killer. I am truly shocked that the UN hasn't tried to get multiple countries to do something similar. Almost seems like a plan that could have piggybacked Reagan's Starwars project, Or even the U.S.A's 'Umbrella' program against being bombed. Let alone other places who would .suffer worse destruction if the asteroid was bigger that the city... blimmy! Bigger than the country!!!?! Scary thoughts eh? Now you wondeering why it isnt up there yet?

$150 Million is the price that Elon Musk charges for a rocket mission the last time I checked.. If he raised $350 Million then he can afford the Falcon 9 to LEO; Then he'd have to buy a booster for the Hohman transfer to Solar Orbit. Elon will probably help him out if he has not already.

this will also prove the Bible, because God put everything in motion He know where everything is,. If man starts messing with things we shouldn't. Rev 8:10-11 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
