Owner of a 2002 Honda Shadow Sabre here. A couple of important steps that Bob missed. Before working on the pads, check the brake fluid level in the rear master cylinder. If it is low, then it is most likely time to change the pads (unless you have a leak or some other damage). If it is full, use a small syringe to remove and discard about half of the fluid. Close it up to keep debris out, then be sure to top off with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid after you change the pads. Lastly, be sure to reuse the brake pads CLIPS (if someone hasn’t already thrown them away). They fit in between the pads and the shim (or the brake quiet that Bob used) and actually DO serve a function. They keep the pads cooler and reduce noise. They also help your pads last longer. Bob didn’t have them on his old pads but they will be on your stock pads. Don’t throw them away! Otherwise, good video.

I don’t feel like I missed any steps? I checked the pads and they were in need of replacement, yes I could also check the fluid level but I prefer to go directly to the pads to confirm that they need replaced. I do not remove any brake fluid at the beginning to just add it back at the end unless I am planning to flush the system and that is a different video. This bike had no clips for the brakes, previous person must have gotten rid of them. Thanks for checking in. Happy riding.

@@funbro1 Thanks Bob. The more important thing is to check the brake fluid level after you change the pads. More than likely, the level will be down if your pads are worn. You’ve GOT to top off the fluid with some fresh DOT 4 fluid. And it boggles my mind as to why people toss original pad clips. People think that they don’t actually serve a function. There’s actually another clip that sits against the caliper that people “lose” as well. Makes no sense. Ride safe out there!

There is a different procedure for changing pads on a rear drum set up is there not? I have an 07 Aero 750 and the rear brake has a drum, I'd have to take a quick look again to remember if the pads and calipers are exposed or not....

Thank you for your response. How do I build pressure back into my rear brake for the 2001 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100? Will this pressure build up again once I replace/repair my front caliper?
@funbro1
@funbro1 10 жыл бұрын
Bob Arriaga The back and front brakes are separate systems. Each will need to have their fluid levels check individually. the front is located on the right handlebar and the cap is held in place by 2 screws. The rear is located on the right side behind a "cover" plate. Once you have them filled all you should have to do is pump the brakes. (note: don't pump the brakes without enough fluid in them, this will introduce air into the system and cause more problems). I was riding through the mountains this week and I noticed that I got some real bad brake fade in the rear brakes so I will be posting a short video on checking and filling the rear brake fluid sometime soon.

what do you think is wrong if the calipers dont move when screwdriver is trying to pry pads from rotor?
@funbro1

Do they work when the brake is applied? Might want to check your fluid level. It may bee too full causing some resistance?
@jakenewcomb8897
@jakenewcomb8897 5 жыл бұрын
@@funbro1 Hmm, I never considered that. its been an ongoing problem. They work when the brake applies, but they never fully let up off the rotor, which causes it to grind down. Ive had to replace the pads twice in a year, and even did a full rotor replacement last year.

Hey Bob: I haven't ridden my 2001 Honda Shadow Sabre 1100 all summer and noticed a fluid leak on my garage mat underneath the front wheel, at the same time I noticed that my rear brakes were not engaging, maybe slightly after I pumped the brake a few times. Can you tell me what may be going on? Thank you...
@funbro1
@funbro1 10 жыл бұрын
Bob Arriaga Sounds like a leaky caliper somewhere, front or back? Check the brake fluid levels to be sure. The only other fluid in the front of the bike would be fork oil. You would see leakage around the lower part of the forks if that was the case. Hope this helps.

It wouldn't hurt, but be prepared for fluid to possibly come out. Thanks for watching.
@SoopaBee
@SoopaBee 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you should! If it’s full, use a syringe and remove about half of the fluid but don’t remove all of it. You don’t want air to get in the lines. Be sure to refill with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid afterwards. Be careful. Brake fluid is extremely corrosive.

Bob - great video! Any idea if this works for a 2007 Honda Sabre? I replaced brake pads because of squealing and grinding - then a few months later the squeeling is back. any ideas? do I really need to replace them again?
@funbro1
@funbro1 7 жыл бұрын
It may be similar but not exact. It seem that with model changes many things are different. The squealing happens sometimes but the grinding I would be concerned about. You should not have to replace them after a few months so you have something going on. Start by checking the thinkness of the pad it should have plenty of pad left after only a month. Check to see if you have any springs that may need to be replaced. Sometimes there are "return springs" that pull the pads off of the rotors. Next try using some brake disc quiet like in the video. Let it dry for a little bit before installing the brakes. This will create a thin rubber like layer that will help stop the squealing. As for the grinding, I'm not sure what that could be without lookinbg at the bike. I Hope this gets you started at least. Happy riding. Thanks for watching.

@@funbro1 update : it turns out the problem was, my pads were worn down and pushing against the rotor and girnding against it, and ruining the rotor. once this was discovered, i replaced my rotor, and put on new pads. but here i am about 6 months later and the damn grinding is back again! im going to look to see if i need to replace the pads again, but that will be the 3rd pair of pads i have put on this bike in the past 2 years, so it has to be something else --- maybe the springs you are mentioning in the post above ^^^^^
