This event at Instituto Cervantes London, on 21 April 2023, sought to highlight the literary heritage of the Spanish state in its various languages, including its less translated languages, by presenting some of literary translation projects currently in progress.
It started with a round table in which different experts and professionals discussed how Spain's cultural diplomacy initiatives may (or may not) contribute to changing the landscape of literary translation in the Anglosphere, as well as the current opportunities in the British publishing market, including Olga Castro (University of Warwick), Ainhoa Sánchez (Acción Cultural Española, AC/E), Tina Kover (Translators Aloud) and Rosie Goldsmith (The Riveter/European Literature Network). This was followed by a reading of unpublished English translations by translators of literatures in Asturian (Robin Munby), Basque (Aritz Branton), Catalan (Mara Faye Lethen), Galician (Jacob Roberts) and Spanish (Katie Whittemore). Translators also talked about their relationship with the texts and their authors, as well as the opportunities and challenges posed by their specific language combinations. There was time for a Q&A and final discussion with all the translators.
This event was organised by Olga Castro (University of Warwick, principal investigator of the project “Changing the Translation Landscape from Multilingual Spain: Cultural Diplomacy and the UK Publishing Industry”), the European Literary Network/The Riveter magazine and the Instituto Cervantes London (non-academic partner in the project), in collaboration with Translators Aloud, Principáu d'Asturies and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).
